Abstract

Compositions for application to the skin of individuals in need thereof are provided that include media conditioned by the growth of human stem cells, particularly human neural stem cells. In some embodiments, the stem cells are grown without the use of feeder layers.

Claims

1. A composition for administration to the skin of an individual, the composition comprising an amount of a conditioned medium and a suitable vehicle, wherein the conditioned medium is conditioned by growth of human stem cells without feeder cells, and wherein said composition is effective to provide an improvement in the health and/or appearance of the skin of the individual.

4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the improvement in the appearance and/or health of the skin of the individual is an improvement in a member of the group consisting of wrinkling, folds, sagging, age spots, uneven pigmentation, thinning, elasticity, scarring, surface roughness, surface roughness, surface vessels, redness, and pore size.

2. The composition of claim 2 wherein the stem cells are neural stem cells.

3. The composition of claim 2 that is substantially free from non-human animal products.

5. A method of treating the skin of an individual in need thereof comprising administering to the skin of the individual a composition comprising an amount of a conditioned medium and a suitable vehicle, wherein said medium is conditioned by growth of human stem cells without feeder cells, and wherein said composition is effective to provide an improvement in the health and/or appearance of the skin of the individual.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the stem cells are neural stem cells.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the composition is substantially free from non-human animal products.

The method of claim 5 wherein the improvement in the appearance or health of the skin of the individual is an improvement in a member of the group consisting of wrinkling, folds, sagging, age spots, uneven pigmentation, thinning, elasticity, scarring, surface roughness, surface roughness, surface vessels, redness, and pore size.

9. A method of making a composition for treatment of skin of an individual in need thereof comprising combining (a) an amount of a medium conditioned by growth of human stem cells without feeder cells that is effective to provide an improvement in the appearance and/or health of the skin of the individual and (b) a suitable vehicle.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the stem cells are neural stem cells.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the composition is substantially free from non-human animal products.

12. A method for the preparation of a skin treatment composition, the method comprising:

providing human neural stem cells;

culturing said stem cells in a feeder-free culture system;

collecting culture medium from said system;

formulating said medium or a purified portion thereof into a topical skin treatment.

13. Use of a medium conditioned by growth of human neural stem cells without feeder cells to prepare a medicament for administration to the skin of an individual in need thereof.

14. A composition for the treatment of a skin disorder selected from wrinkling, folds, sagging, age spots, uneven pigmentation, thinning, elasticity, scarring, surface roughness, surface roughness, surface vessels, redness, and pore size, said composition comprising a conditioned medium from human neural stem cells grown without feeder cells and a suitable vehicle.

15. A kit comprising a product for administration to the skin of an individual, the kit comprising:

(a) a composition for administration to the skin of an individual, the composition comprising an amount of a medium conditioned by human neural stem cells grown without feeder cells that is effective to provide an improvement in the appearance or health of the skin of the individual and a suitable vehicle;

and (b) suitable packaging.

16. The kit of claim 15 wherein the composition is substantially free from non-human animal products.
