Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a computing device having a controller to transmit a client program having a graphical user interface (GUI) to a media device operating in an interactive television (iTV) network, wherein the client program presents an overlay that superimposes onto media content received by the media device and enables the media device to associate a user-generated comment with the media content received at the media device, receive at least one of a plurality of user-generated comments and media content in a temporal vicinity of the plurality of user-generated comments via the client program, receive a request to transmit to a recipient device a portion of the plurality of user-generated comments or the media content in the temporal vicinity of the plurality of user-generated comments, and transmit to the recipient device one of the portion or one or more links to the portion. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims

1. A computing device, comprising a controller to:

transmit a client program having a graphical user interface (GUI) to a media device operating in an interactive television (iTV) network, wherein the client program presents an overlay that superimposes onto media content received by the media device and enables the media device to associate a user-generated comment with the media content received at the media device;

receive at least one of a plurality of user-generated comments and media content in a temporal vicinity of the plurality of user-generated comments via the client program;

receive a request to transmit to a recipient device a portion of the plurality of user-generated comments or the media content in the temporal vicinity of the plurality of user-generated comments; and

transmit to the recipient device one of the portion or one or more links to the portion.

2. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the iTV network comprises at least one of internet protocol television (IPTV), interactive cable television, and interactive satellite television.

3. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the media content comprises at least one of audio content, video content, still image content, text content, and other content.

4. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the controller is operable to prompt the media device to set a range of the media content to be transmitted to the computing device.

5. The computing device of claim 1, wherein computing device comprises at least one of a mobile device, a computer, a set-top-box (STB), and telephone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a server and a computing tablet.

6. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the controller is operable to identify a portion of the media content to be transmitted when receiving only the comment associated with the portion of the media content from the media device.

7. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the controller is operable to filter content from the plurality of user-generated comments based on at least one filtering parameter.

8. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the controller is operable to identify a cluster of the plurality of user-generated comments associated with the media content, and wherein the controller is operable to transmit at least one of the cluster and the media content associated with the cluster to at least one of the media device and the recipient device.

9. The computing device of claim 1, wherein the controller is operable to set a threshold quantity for the plurality of user-generated comments.

10. A method, comprising steps to:

present media content received from a media content source;

temporally monitor the presentation of the media content;

detect a plurality of requests to generate a corresponding plurality of user-generated comments;

generate a plurality of timestamps associated with the plurality of requests;

receive the plurality of user-generated comments;

temporally associate the plurality of user-generated comments with the media content according to their corresponding plurality of timestamps; and

transmit to a recipient device information associated with the plurality of user-generated comments and temporal information thereof.

The method of claim 10, wherein at least one of the media content source and the recipient media device operate in an interactive television (iTV) network, wherein the iTV network comprises at least one of internet protocol television (IPTV), interactive cable television, and interactive satellite television.

The method of claim 10, wherein the information associated with the plurality of user-generated comments comprises at least one of links to the plurality of user-generated comments, links to the media content, the user-generated comments, and the media content, and wherein the temporal information comprises at least one of the timestamps and links to the timestamps.

13. The method of claim 10, comprising a step to request an identification of a cluster of user-generated comments of the plurality of user-generated comments.

14. The method of claim 10, comprising a step to receive a prompt from a server to set a range of the media content to be transmitted to the server.

15. The method of claim 10, comprising a step to receive a comment generated by another device, wherein the comment is associated with at least a portion of the media content.

16. A computer-readable storage medium, comprising computer instructions to:

receive a plurality of user-generated comments associated with media content in a temporal vicinity of the plurality of user-generated comments from a media device;

identify the media content associated with the plurality of user-generated based on the received plurality of user-generated comments;

retrieve information associated with at least one of the plurality of user-generated comments and the identified media content;

receive a request to transmit to a recipient device the information associated with at least one of the plurality of user-generated comments and the identified media content; and

transmit the information associated with at least one of the plurality of user-generated comments and the identified media content.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, comprising computer instructions to identify a cluster of the plurality of user-generated comments associated with the media content, and further comprising computer instructions to transmit at least one of the cluster and the media content associated with the cluster to at least one of the media device and the recipient device

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, comprising computer instructions to prompt the media device for a range of the media content associated with the comment.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the range of the media content is defined by the media device by inserting a start tag and an end tag in a timeline associated with the media content.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16, comprising computer instructions to filter content from the comment, and further comprising computer instructions to replace substitute content for the filtered content.
