Abstract

Retard energy regenerated from an electrical motor during braking action is reinjected into a power system via trolley lines. The retard energy may be transmitted to a bidirectional electric substation and returned to a utility grid. The retard energy may also be transmitted to an auxiliary energy storage system, such as an ultracapacitor system or a battery system. Installing trolley lines for mining haul trucks on a downhill slope may be used to capture and re-use substantial quantities of retard energy.

Claims

1. A method for reinjecting retard energy regenerated from an electrical motor on a vehicle, the method comprising the step of:

transmitting via trolley lines at least a portion of the retard energy regenerated during at least one retard interval to a bidirectional electric substation.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the vehicle comprises a mining haul truck.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein:

the at least one retard interval occurs while the mining haul truck is travelling downhill.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

charging an on-board electrical energy storage system with at least a portion of the retard energy.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one ultracapacitor.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one battery.

7. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of:

supplying electrical power to the electrical motor from the on-board electrical energy storage system.

8. A method for storing retard energy regenerated from an electrical motor on a vehicle, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting via trolley lines at least a portion of the retard energy regenerated during at least one retard interval to an auxiliary electrical energy storage system; and

charging the auxiliary electrical energy storage system with at least a portion of the retard energy.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein:

the vehicle comprises a mining haul truck.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein:

the at least one retard interval occurs while the mining haul truck is travelling downhill.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein:

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system comprises at least one ultracapacitor.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein:

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system comprises at least one battery.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising the step of:

transmitting at least a portion of the retard energy to a unidirectional electric substation via at least one of;

the trolley lines; and

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of:

charging the auxiliary electrical energy storage system with electrical power supplied from the unidirectional electric substation.

15. The method of claim 8, further comprising the step of:

transmitting at least a portion of the retard energy to a bidirectional electric substation via at least one of;

the trolley lines; and

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of:

charging the auxiliary electrical energy storage system with electrical power supplied from the bidirectional electric substation.

17. The method of claim 8 further comprising the step of:

supplying electrical power to the trolley lines from the auxiliary electrical energy storage system.

18. The method of claim 8 further comprising the step of:

charging an on-board electrical energy storage system with at least a portion of the retard energy.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one ultracapacitor.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one battery.

21. The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of:

supplying electrical power to the electrical motor from the on-board electrical energy storage system.

22. An electrical power system for reinjecting retard energy regenerated from an electrical motor on a vehicle, the electrical power system comprising an inverter configured to:

receive at least a portion of the retard energy; and

transmit via trolley lines at least a portion of the retard energy to a bidirectional substation.

23. The electrical power system of claim 22, wherein the inverter is further configured to:

receive electrical power via the trolley lines from the bidirectional substation.

24. The electrical power system of claim 22, wherein the inverter is further configured to:

supply at least a portion of the retard energy to an on-board electrical energy storage system.

25. The electrical power system of claim 24, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one ultracapacitor.

26. The electrical power system of claim 24, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one battery.

27. The electrical power system of claim 24, wherein the inverter is further configured to:

receive electrical power from the on-board electrical energy storage system.

28. An electrical power system for storing retard energy regenerated from an electrical motor on a vehicle, the electrical power system comprising:

an inverter configured to;

receive at least a portion of the retard energy; and

transmit at least a portion of the retard energy to trolley lines; and

an auxiliary electrical energy storage system configured to receive at least a portion of the retard energy from the trolley lines.

29. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein:

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system comprises at least one ultracapacitor.

30. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein:

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system comprises at least one battery.

31. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein:

the auxiliary electrical energy storage system is further configured to supply electrical power to the trolley lines.

32. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein the inverter is further configured to transmit via the trolley lines at least of the portion of the retard energy to a unidirectional electrical substation.

33. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein the auxiliary electrical energy storage system is further configured to transmit at least a portion of the retard energy to a unidirectional electrical substation.

34. The electrical power system of claim 33, wherein the auxiliary electrical energy storage system is further configured to receive electrical power from the unidirectional electrical substation.

35. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein the inverter is further configured to transmit via the trolley lines at least of the portion of the retard energy to a bidirectional electrical substation.

36. The electrical power system of claim 28, wherein the auxiliary electrical energy storage system is further configured to transmit at least a portion of the retard energy to a bidirectional electrical substation.

37. The electrical power system of claim 36, wherein the auxiliary electrical energy storage system is further configured to receive electrical power from the bidirectional electrical substation.

38. The electrical power system of claim 28, further comprising:

an on-board electrical energy storage system configured to receive at least a portion of the retard energy.

39. The electrical power system of claim 38, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one ultracapacitor.

40. The electrical power system of claim 38, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system comprises at least one battery.

41. The electrical power system of claim 38, wherein:

the on-board electrical energy storage system is further configured to supply electrical power to the electrical motor.
