Abstract

A surgical stapling instrument is provided having systems for securing buttress material to the anvil and staple containing cartridge associated with the surgical instrument. The system includes a retainer configured to engage the anvil or the staple containing cartridge and capture the buttress material between the retainer and the anvil or staple containing cartridge. The disclose retainer engages the anvil or staple containing cartridge in snap fit or friction fit fashion. The buttress material includes a circumferential perforation line enabling the center of the buttress material to be stapled to tissue while the remainder of the buttress material remains with the anvil or staple containing cartridge.

Claims

1. A surgical instrument having a system of retaining buttress material comprising:

a jaw assembly including a first jaw and a second jaw, at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw defining staple pockets for retaining staples; and

a buttress material having a central portion and a peripheral portion including a perforation line separating the central portion from the peripheral portion, the peripheral portion being attached to a tissue contacting surface of at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, the central portion being separable from the peripheral portion after the staples are fired.

2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1, further comprising a buttress retainer having an open center portion and being attached to at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, the peripheral portion of the buttress material being retained by the buttress retainer.

3. The surgical instrument according to claim 2, wherein the buttress retainer includes at least one depending leg for engaging at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw.

The surgical instrument according to claim 3, wherein the at least one depending leg of the buttress retainer includes an inwardly directed projection configured to engage a side edge of one of the first jaw and the second jaw, to retain the edge of the corresponding jaw between the inwardly directed projection and the buttress retainer.

5. The surgical instrument according to claim 4, wherein the inwardly directed projection of the at least one depending leg of the buttress retainer is adapted to slide over the edge of the corresponding jaw.

6. The surgical instrument according to claim 4, wherein the inwardly directed projection of the at least one depending leg of the buttress retainer is adapted to snap fit over the edge of the corresponding jaw.

7. The surgical instrument according to claim 3, wherein the at least one depending leg is configured to engage a raised edge of one of the first jaw and second jaw.

8. The surgical instrument according to claim 7, wherein the at least one depending leg frictionally engages the raised edge of the corresponding jaw.

9. The surgical instrument according to claim 2, wherein the buttress retainer is a circular ring.

10. The surgical instrument according to claim 2, wherein the buttress retainer is a rectangular frame.

11. The surgical instrument according to claim 1, wherein the first jaw and the second jaw each include a buttress material.

12. The surgical instrument according to claim 11, further comprising a first buttress retainer for retaining the buttress material of the first jaw and a second buttress retainer for retaining the buttress material of the second jaw, each of the first and second buttress retainers having an open center portion and being attached to its corresponding jaw, the peripheral portion of each buttress material being retained by its respective buttress retainer.

13. The surgical instrument according to claim 12, wherein the first buttress retainer is retained to the first jaw by engaging an edge of the first jaw and the second buttress retainer is retained to the second jaw by friction fit against a raised edge of the second jaw.

14. The surgical instrument according to claim 11, wherein the buttress material of the first jaw is different from the buttress material of the second jaw.

15. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a jaw assembly including a first jaw and a second jaw, each of the first jaw and the second jaw defining a tissue contacting surface, at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw defining staple pockets formed in the respective tissue contacting surface for forming staples expelled from corresponding staple retaining slots defined in the tissue contacting surface of the other of the first jaw and second jaw;

a buttress material having a central portion, a peripheral portion, and a perforation line separating the central portion from the peripheral portion, at least the peripheral portion being disposed against the tissue contacting surface of at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, the central portion of the buttress material being separable from the peripheral portion of the buttress material after staples are fired by the surgical instrument; and

a buttress material retainer for securing at least a portion of the buttress material against the tissue contacting surface of at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, the buttress material retainer including a frame configured to overlie the buttress material and extend around the entire perimeter of the peripheral portion of the buttress material,

wherein, upon firing of the surgical instrument, staples secure the central portion of the buttress material against tissue and the frame retains the peripheral portion of the buttress material against the tissue contacting surface of the at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, and

wherein, upon separation of the at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw from the tissue, the central portion of the buttress material is separated from the peripheral portion of the buttress material along the perforation line.

16. The surgical instrument according to claim 15, wherein the buttress material retainer includes at least one depending leg for engaging a side edge of at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw.

The surgical instrument according to claim 16, wherein the at least one depending leg of the buttress material retainer includes an inwardly directed projection configured to engage the side edge of one of the first jaw and the second jaw, to retain the edge of the corresponding jaw between the inwardly directed projection and the buttress material retainer.

18. The surgical instrument according to claim 15, wherein the frame of the buttress material retainer is a circular ring for engaging a circular jaw of a circular surgical stapling instrument.

19. The surgical instrument according to claim 15, wherein the frame of the buttress material retainer is rectangular.

20. The surgical instrument according to claim 15, wherein each of the first jaw and the second jaw includes a buttress material.

21. The surgical instrument according to claim 20, further comprising:

a first buttress material retainer for retaining a first buttress material against the tissue contacting surface of the first jaw; and

a second buttress material retainer for retaining a second buttress material against the tissue contacting surface of the second jaw,

wherein each of the first and second buttress material retainers has an open center portion and is attached to its corresponding jaw, and wherein the peripheral portion of each buttress material is retained by its respective buttress material retainer.

22. The surgical instrument according to claim 21, wherein the buttress material of the first jaw is different from the buttress material of the second jaw.
