Abstract

A method of fabricating a liquid crystal display device includes preparing a first substrate and a second substrate, forming a thin film transistor including a gate electrode, semiconductor layer, source electrode, and a drain electrode on the first substrate, forming a pixel electrode connected to the drain electrode on the first substrate, forming a color filter having a transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes, forming a sealant between the first substrate and the second substrate, and bonding the first and second substrates to each other.

Claims

1. A method of fabricating a liquid crystal display device, comprising:

preparing a first substrate and a second substrate;

forming a thin film transistor including a gate electrode, semiconductor layer, source electrode, and a drain electrode on the first substrate;

forming a pixel electrode connected to the drain electrode on the first substrate;

forming a color filter having a transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes;

forming a sealant between the first substrate and the second substrate; and

bonding the first and second substrates to each other.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmissive pattern includes a three-dimensional pattern to selectively transmit only red, green or blue light.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a thickness of the transmissive pattern for each color varies.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes are formed in a metal layer.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein a thickness of the transmissive pattern for each color is identical to a thickness of the metal layer.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes are formed in a dielectric layer.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes has one or two dimensional periodic structure.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein a period of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.688 times a transmission wavelength and a size of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.356 times the transmission wavelength.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein a period of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.836 times a transmission wavelength and a size of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.334 times the transmission wavelength.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein a period of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.877 times a transmission wavelength and a size of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.359 times the transmission wavelength.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the thin film transistor is formed on an inner surface of the first substrate and the sealant is formed between the inner surface of the first substrate and the second substrate.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising a common electrode formed parallel to the pixel electrode wherein the pixel electrode and the common electrode have at least one bent portion.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising a data line crossing a gate line wherein the data line has at least one bent portion.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising a common electrode formed on the second substrate.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising forming an insulating layer on the color filter, the insulating layer being formed of a same dielectric material as that of the first substrate.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising a liquid crystal layer formed between the first and second substrates.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the color filter is formed of at least one of aluminum, molybdenum, copper, gold, silver, and chromium.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmissive pattern is formed of a transparent polymer, spin on glass (SOG), organic material, or inorganic material.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein a cross-sectional view of the holes of the transmissive pattern includes at least one of circle, oval, triangle, square, and rectangle.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein a cross-sectional view of the holes of the transmissive pattern includes a plurality of circles with a diameter in the range of 100 to 300 nm and a period in the range of 300 to 700 nm.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the color filter is formed on the first substrate.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the color filter is formed on the second substrate.

24. A liquid crystal display device, comprising:

a first substrate;

a thin film transistor including a gate electrode, semiconductor layer, source electrode, and a drain electrode formed on the first substrate;

a pixel electrode connected to the drain electrode formed on the first substrate;

a color filter having a transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes;

a second substrate bonded to the first substrate; and

a sealant formed between the first substrate and the second substrate.

25. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the transmissive pattern includes a three-dimensional pattern to selectively transmit only red, green or blue light.

26. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein a thickness of the transmissive pattern for each color varies.

27. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes are formed in a metal layer.

28. The liquid crystal display device of claim 27, wherein a thickness of the transmissive pattern for each color is identical to a thickness of the metal layer.

29. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes are formed in a dielectric layer.

30. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the transmissive pattern with a plurality of periodic holes has one or two dimensional periodic structure.

31. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein a period of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.688 times a transmission wavelength and a size of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.356 times the transmission wavelength.

32. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein a period of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.836 times a transmission wavelength and a size of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.334 times the transmission wavelength.

33. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein a period of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.877 times a transmission wavelength and a size of the plurality of holes is set to be about 0.359 times the transmission wavelength.

34. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the thin film transistor is formed on an inner surface of the first substrate and the sealant is formed between the inner surface of the first substrate and the second substrate.

35. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, further comprising a common electrode formed parallel to the pixel electrode wherein the pixel electrode and the common electrode have at least one bent portion.

36. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, further comprising a data line crossing a gate line wherein the data line has at least one bent portion.

37. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, further comprising a common electrode formed on the second substrate.

38. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, further comprising forming an insulating layer on the color filter, the insulating layer being formed of a same dielectric material as that of the first substrate.

39. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, further comprising a liquid crystal layer formed between the first and second substrates.

40. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the color filter is formed of at least one of aluminum, molybdenum, copper, gold, silver, and chromium.

41. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the transmissive pattern is formed of a transparent polymer, spin on glass (SOG), organic material, or inorganic material.

42. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein a cross-sectional view of the holes of the transmissive pattern includes at least one of circle, oval, triangle, square, and rectangle.

43. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein a cross-sectional view of the holes of the transmissive pattern includes a plurality of circles with a diameter in the range of 100 to 300 nm and a period in the range of 300 to 700 nm.

44. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the color filter is formed on the first substrate.

45. The liquid crystal display device of claim 24, wherein the color filter is formed on the second substrate.
