Abstract

Geographic advertising utilizes a location of a mobile communications device to infer potential interest in a product and/or service. A scalable network protocol is utilized to provide advertisements, coupons, discounts, or the like, to mobile communications devices that are within a select geographic area or areas. A geographically addressed message is formulated based on the location of a potential customer and the content to be provided to potential customer. A message is generated at the time it is sent based on a current location of mobile communications device in the select geographic area. A protocol is utilized that replaces an IP address with a geographic location.

Claims

1. A method for providing an advertisement message, the method comprising:

receiving a signal comprising;

an indication of a location of a geographic region of intended reception of the signal; and

an indication of an advertisement message;

comparing a location at which the signal was received with the location of the region of intended reception;

when the location at which the signal was received at least one of the same as, a part of, or overlaps with the location of the region of intended reception, rendering the advertisement.

2. The method in accordance with claim 1, wherein the signal is formatted as packet comprising an indication of a geographic location instead of an IP address.

3. The method in accordance with claim 1, wherein content of the signal is formulated at a time when it is sent.

4. The method in accordance with claim 1, wherein the advertisement is rendered at least one of visually, aurally, or mechanically.

5. The method in accordance with claim 1, wherein content of the rendered advertisement comprises at least one of text, a graphic, an image, multimedia, or audio.

6. The method in accordance with claim 1, further comprising determining whether to resend the message.

7. The method in accordance with claim 6, further comprising, when it is determined to resend the message, resending the message in accordance the location at which the signal was received.

8. The method in accordance with claim 6, wherein, when it is determined to resend the message, the method comprising:

determining whether the same message was receive at least a predetermined number of times; and

when it is determined that the message has not been received the predetermined number of times, resending the message.

9. The method in accordance with claim 6, wherein, when it is determined to resend the message, the method comprising:

determining whether the message was sent from a location closer than some minimum distance from the location of receipt of the message; and

when it is determined that the message was not sent from a location closer than some minimum distance from the location of receipt of the message, resending the message.

10. The method in accordance with claim 6, wherein, when it is determined to resend the message, the method comprising:

determining whether the location of receipt of the message is closer to a center of the geographic region than the location from which the message was sent; and

when it is determined that the location of receipt of the message is closer to a center of the geographic region than the location from which the message was sent, resending the message.

11. A communications device configured to receive an advertisement message, the device comprising:

an input/output portion configured to receive a signal comprising;

an indication of a location of a geographic region of intended reception of the signal;

an indication of a location of a sender of the signal; and

an indication of an advertisement message;

an processing portion configured to;

compare a location at which the signal was received with the location of the region of intended reception;

when the location at which the signal was received at least one of the same as, a part of, or overlaps with the location of the region of intended reception, render the advertisement via the device.

12. The device in accordance with claim 11, wherein the signal is formatted as geocast packet.

13. The device in accordance with claim 11, wherein content of the signal is formulated at a time when it is sent.

14. The device in accordance with claim 11, wherein content of the rendered advertisement comprises at least one of text, a graphic, an image, multimedia, or audio.

15. The device in accordance with claim 11, wherein the processing portion is further configured to determine whether to resend the message.

16. The device in accordance with claim 15, wherein when it is determined to resend the message, the input/output portion is configured to resend the message in accordance the location at which the signal was received.

17. The device in accordance with claim 15, wherein, when it is determined to resend the message:

the processing portion is configured to;

determine whether the same message was receive at least a predetermined number of times; and

the input/output portion is configured to;

when it is determined that the message has not been received the predetermined number of times, resend the message.

18. The device in accordance with claim 15, wherein, when it is determined to resend the message:

the processing portion is configured to;

determine whether the message was sent from a location closer than some minimum distance from the location of receipt of the message; and

the input/output portion is configured to;

when it is determined that the message was not sent from a location closer than some minimum distance from the location of receipt of the message, resend the message.

19. The device in accordance with claim 15, wherein, when it is determined to resend the message:

the processing portion is configured to;

determine whether the location of receipt of the message is closer to a center of the geographic region than the location from which the message was sent; and

the input/output portion is configured to;

when it is determined that the location of receipt of the message is closer to a center of the geographic region than the location from which the message was sent, resend the message.
