Abstract

User profiles are created based on taxonomic nouns related to documents accessed by the user. The profiles can be leveraged to create lists, such as mailing lists and lead lists, to target content, such as offers, to persons most likely to be interested in the content. A database of the profiles is queried based on nouns describing content to be promoted. The profiles that satisfy the query are used to generate a list. The invention can be used to create any type of list, such as mailing lists, lead lists, lists of related content, lists of related users, lists of categorized content, and the like.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for generating a targeted list of entities interested in content of interest, the method comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, a set of nouns characterizing content of interest;

creating a query based on the set of nouns

querying a database with the query, the database being stored on computer readable media and having stored therein profiles including taxonomic nouns derived from user access to content;

determining, by a computing device, matching profiles that satisfy the query;

creating a list of users associated with the matching profiles.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining the number of profiles in the database matching the query;

determining a set of related nouns that are related to the nouns characterizing content of interest; and

deciding whether or not to use the related nouns to expand the query based on the desired size of the list;

if it is decided to expand the list, expanding the query based on at least some of the related nouns; and

wherein said determining step comprises determining matching profiles that satisfy the expanded query.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the profiles are created by at least one of;

a) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based upon the author-generated classification information of content accessed by a user;

b) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns t based upon the user-generated tag characterization of a content accessed by a user;

c) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based on a search term that resulted in a user accessing content;

d) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based upon attributes related to the manner in which a user accessed content; and

e) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based upon a predetermined pattern rule applied to content accessed by a user.

The method of claim 3, wherein the attributes related to the manner in which the user accessed content include at least one of a network type used to access the document, a Web site from which the content was accessed, an electronic correspondence to which the document was associated, a time of day the content was accessed, a referrer who directed the user to the content, and a content category used by a repository storing the content to describe the content.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the attributes related to the manner in which the user accessed the content include a click rate indicating a level of a user'"'"'s relative interest in the content in relation to other content available to the user.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

a computing device sending an offer related to the content to be promoted to persons associated with profiles in the list of profiles.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the list includes contact information of users corresponding to profiles in the list.

8. A computer system for generating a targeted list of entities interested in content of interest, the method comprising:

a computing device configured to receive a set of nouns characterizing content of interest;

a database configured to receive a query based on the set of nouns, the database being stored on computer readable media and having stored therein profiles based on taxonomic nouns based on user access to content;

a computing device configured to determine matching profiles that satisfy the query;

a computing device configured to create a list of users associated with the matching profiles

9. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

a computing device configured to determine the number of profiles in the database matching the query;

a computing device configured to determine a set of related nouns that are related to the nouns characterizing content of interest; and

wherein if it is decided to expand the list, the query is expanded based on at least some of the related nouns and matching profiles are determined that satisfy the expanded query.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the profiles are created by at least one of;

a) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based upon the author-generated classification information of content accessed by a user;

b) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns t based upon the user-generated tag characterization of a content accessed by a user;

c) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based on a search term that resulted in a user accessing content;

d) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based upon attributes related to the manner in which a user accessed content; and

e) assigning a set of taxonomic nouns based upon a predetermined pattern rule applied to content accessed by a user.

The system of claim 10, wherein the attributes related to the manner in which the user accessed content include at least one of a network type used to access the document, a Web site from which the content was accessed, an electronic correspondence to which the document was associated, a time of day the content was accessed, a referrer who directed the user to the content, and a content category used by a repository storing the content to describe the content.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the attributes related to the manner in which the user accessed the content include a click rate indicating a level of a user'"'"'s relative interest in the content in relation to other content available to the user.

13. The system of claim 8, further comprising the step of:

a computing device configured to send an offer related to the content to be promoted to persons associated with profiles in the list of profiles.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein the list includes contact information of users corresponding to profiles in the list.

15. Computer-readable media having computer-readable instructions recorded thereon, which when executed by a processor cause the processor to implement a method for generating a targeted list of entities interested in content of interest, the method comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, a set of nouns characterizing content of interest;

querying a database with a query based on the set of nouns, the database being stored on computer readable media and having stored therein profiles including taxonomic nouns based on user access to content;

determining, by a computing device, matching profiles that satisfy the query;

creating a list of users associated with the matching profiles.
