Abstract

Common wave and sideband mitigation communication systems and methods are provided that can be used with both wireless and wired communication links. The systems and methods provided can enable faster data rates, greater immunity to noise, increased bandwidth/spectrum efficiency and/or other benefits. Applications include but are not limited to: cell phones, smartphones (e.g., iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.), wireless Internet, local area networks (e.g., WiFi type applications), wide area networks (e.g., WiMAX type applications), personal digital assistants, computers, Internet service providers and communications satellites.

Claims

1. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a transmitter that simultaneously transmits a plurality of channels across a communications link wherein the plurality of channels further comprise at least one data signal channel that carries data information and at least one reference channel that carries a reference signal that has a predetermined relationship with the data signal and wherein the data information in the data signal channel can be recovered when transmitted across the communications link with unknown characteristics based on the at least one reference channel.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a receiver separated from the transmitter by the communication link that receives the simultaneous plurality of channels, the receiver having a data extractor that extracts the data information from the at least one data channel based on the at least one reference channel.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the data extractor determines a difference between the at least one data channel and the at least one reference channel to extract the data information from the at least one data channel.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one reference channel does not carry data information.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one reference channel does not carry data information during a period that the at least one data channel carries data information.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one reference channel and the at least one data channel are transmitted over a single transmission medium.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the communications link further comprises a hard wire communications link.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the hard wire communications link further comprises one of a wire, a coaxial cable, a fiber optic element, a printed circuit board trace, an integrated circuit trace, drilling mud and an AC power distribution line.

9. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the communications link further comprises a wireless communications link operating over a medium that transmits the plurality of channels, wherein the medium further comprises one of air, space or water.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the reference signal has more power than the at least one data signal.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the reference signal is used by a plurality of mobile device service providers.

12. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a receiver that simultaneously receives a plurality of channels across a communications link wherein the plurality of channels further comprise at least one data signal channel that carries data information and at least one reference channel that carries a reference signal that has a predetermined relationship with the data signal and wherein the data information in the data signal channel can be recovered when received across the communications link with unknown characteristics based on the at least one reference channel.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising a data extractor that extracts the data information from the at least one data channel based on the at least one reference channel.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the data extractor determines a difference between the at least one data channel and the at least one reference channel to extract the data information from the at least one data channel.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one reference channel does not carry data information.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one reference channel does not carry data information during a period that the at least one data channel carries data information.

17. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the at least one reference channel and the at least one data channel are transmitted over a single transmission medium.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the communications link further comprises a hard wire communications link.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the hard wire communications link further comprises one of a wire, a coaxial cable, a fiber optic element, a printed circuit board trace, an integrated circuit trace, drilling mud and an AC power distribution line.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the communications link further comprises a wireless communications link operating over a medium that transmits the plurality of channels, wherein the medium further comprises one of air, space or water.

21. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the reference signal has more power than the at least one data signal.

22. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the reference signal is used by a plurality of mobile device service providers.

23. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a receiver that is capable of receiving an alternating phase signal by adjusting how the signal is input to a tuned circuit.

24. A phase filter apparatus, comprising:

a circuit for sending an input signal to a plurality of circuits, wherein each of the plurality of circuits combines expected possible signals with the input signals, and a comparator that compares the resultant combined signals to determine which is closest to one of another set of expected signals.

25. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a transmitter that is capable of transmitting a channel across a transmission line,

the transmitter further comprises a carrier wave source that provides a carrier wave having a frequency and a circuit that changes a characteristic of the carrier wave wherein the changing of the characteristic of the carrier wave causes a substantial reduction in the average power at the frequency of the carrier wave.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises a phase of the carrier wave and wherein the circuit that changes a characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises a circuit that shifts the phase of the carrier wave in such a manner that there is a substantial reduction in the average power at the carrier frequency.

27. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the circuit that changes a characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises a neutralizing signal generator that injects a neutralizing signal having a characteristic into the transmission line that neutralizes one or more sidebands at one or more sideband frequencies of the carrier wave wherein the neutralizing signal destructively interferes with the one or more sidebands at one or more sideband frequencies.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the characteristic of the neutralizing signal is determined by a formula in which the data to be transmitted is input into the formula.

29. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the characteristic of the neutralizing signal is determined by a lookup table in which the data to be transmitted is used.

30. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the characteristic of the carrier wave is selected from a group consisting of a phase of the carrier wave, an amplitude of the carrier wave and a frequency of the carrier wave.

31. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the circuit that changes characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises a modulator.

32. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a receiver that is capable of receiving a channel across a transmission line,

the receiver further comprises a circuit that receives a sideband neutralized carrier wave having a changed characteristic and recovers a carrier wave from the sideband neutralized carrier wave.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the changed characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises a phase of the carrier wave and wherein the circuit that recovers the carrier wave shifts the phase of the carrier wave to generate the carrier wave.

34. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the circuit that recovers the carrier wave further comprises a circuit that removes a neutralizing signal having a characteristic from the sideband neutralized carrier wave to recover the carrier wave.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the characteristic of the carrier wave is selected from a group consisting of a phase of the carrier wave, an amplitude of the carrier wave and a frequency of the carrier wave.

36. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the circuit that recovers the carrier wave further comprises a modulator.

37. A communications method, comprising:

providing data information; and

simultaneously transmitting a plurality of channels across a communications link wherein the plurality of channels further comprise at least one data signal channel that carries data information and at least one reference channel that carries a reference signal that has a predetermined relationship with the data signal and wherein the data information in the data signal channel can be recovered when transmitted across the communications link with unknown characteristics based on the at least one reference channel.

38. The method of claim 37 further comprising receiving the simultaneous plurality of channels and extracting the data information from the at least one data channel based on the at least one reference channel.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein extracting the data information further comprises determining a difference between the at least one data channel and the at least one reference channel to extract the data information from the at least one data channel.

40. The method of claim 38, wherein the at least one reference channel does not carry data information.

41. The method of claim 38, wherein the at least one reference channel does not carry data information during a period that the at least one data channel carries data information.

42. The method of claim 38, wherein the at least one reference channel and the at least one data channel are transmitted over a single transmission medium.

43. A communications method, comprising:

providing a carrier wave having a frequency; and

changing a characteristic of the carrier wave wherein the changing of the characteristic of the carrier wave causes a substantial reduction in the average power at the frequency of the carrier wave.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein changing the characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises shifting the phase of the carrier wave in such a manner that there is a substantial reduction in the average power at the carrier frequency.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein changing the characteristic of the carrier wave further comprises injecting a neutralizing signal having a characteristic into the transmission line that neutralizes one or more sidebands at one or more sideband frequencies of the carrier wave wherein the neutralizing signal destructively interferes with the one or more sidebands at one or more sideband frequencies.

46. The method of claim 43, wherein the characteristic of the carrier wave is selected from a group consisting of a phase of the carrier wave, an amplitude of the carrier wave and a frequency of the carrier wave.
