Abstract

A medication injection site is provided that includes a medication port and an identification sensor. The medication injection site, when coupled to a medication container, can wirelessly transmit data characterizing the contents of the medication container to a remote data collection system. The housing of the medication injection site has a shape and size enabling it to be held by a first hand of a user while the user administers medication from the medication container via the medication port using his or her second hand. The housing can include a disposable sub-housing and a reusable sub-housing such that the reusable sub-housing is used by many patients. In some implementations, the medication injection site can be placed on an IV drip line. Related apparatus, systems, and kits are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

a housing comprising a reusable sub-housing and a disposable sub-housing, the reusable sub-housing being operatively coupled to the disposable sub-housing, wherein the reusable sub-housing is intended for use by a plurality of patients and the disposable sub-housing is intended for use by a single patient;

a medication port configured to be fluidically coupled to a fluid outlet of a medication container;

an identification sensor disposed within the housing to generate information indicative of contents of the medication container when the fluid outlet of the medication container is fluidically coupled to the medication port;

a transmitter disposed within the housing and in communication with the identification sensor to wirelessly transmit the information generated by the identification sensor to a remote data collection system; and

a power source disposed within the housing powering the identification sensor and the transmitter.

A system as in claim 1, further comprising a junction element at least partially extending within the housing forming a first fluid channel and a second fluid channel, the first fluid channel extending from a first end to a second end, the second fluid channel extending from a distal end and terminating at the first fluid channel at an intersection intermediate the first end and the second end;

3. A system as in claim 1, wherein the power source is disposed within the reusable sub-housing.

4. A system as in claim 3, wherein the identification sensor is disposed within the reusable sub-housing.

5. A system as in claim 4, wherein the transmitter is disposed within the reusable sub-housing.

6. A system as in claim 1 wherein the transmitter is a transceiver.

7. A system as in claim 1, wherein the disposable sub-housing is part of a kit including a sterile pouch enveloping the disposable sub-housing.

8. A system as in claim 2, wherein the first fluid channel and the second fluid channel are disposed within the disposable sub-housing.

9. A system as in claim 2, further comprising:

a self-contained fluid delivery sensor disposed within the re-usable sub-housing and in communication with the transmitter to characterize fluid flow through one or more of the first fluid channel and the second fluid channel, wherein the transmitter further wirelessly transmits data characterizing fluid delivery to the remote data collection system.

10. A system as in claim 1, further comprising:

a processor disposed within the re-usable sub-housing that is coupled to one or more of the identification sensor, the transmitter, and the power source.

11. A system as in claim 1, wherein the power source is self-contained, coupled to a remote power source, or is a rechargeable battery that can be detachably coupled to a remote charging source.

12. A system as in claim 1, wherein the housing has a shape and size enabling it to be held by a first hand of a user while the user administers medication from the medication container via the medication port using his or her second hand.

13. A system as in claim 1, wherein the re-usable sub-housing is operatively coupled to the disposable sub-housing by a connection interface.

14. A system as in claim 13, wherein the connection interface includes one or more of an electrical contact, an optical coupling, a mechanical coupling, and a magnetic coupling.

15. A system comprising:

a housing;

a medication port disposed within or extending from the housing configured to be fluidically coupled to a fluid outlet of a medication container;

an identification sensor disposed within the housing to generate information indicative of contents of the medication container when the fluid outlet of the medication container is fluidically coupled to the medication port;

a transmitter disposed within the housing and in communication with the identification sensor to wirelessly transmit the information generated by the identification sensor to a remote data collection system, wherein the remote data collection system is coupled to or integral with a secondary medical device; and

a power source disposed within the housing powering the identification sensor and the transmitter.

16. A system as in claim 15, wherein the secondary medical device is selected from a group comprising:

a physiological sensor, a defibrillator, an infusion pump, a ventilator, an anesthesia machine.

17. A system as in claim 16, wherein the physiological sensor is selected from a group comprising:

an EKG monitor, a blood pressure monitor, an ETCO2 monitor, a pulse oximeter.

18. A system as in claim 15, further comprising the remote data collection system, wherein the remote data collection system comprises:

a first receiver in wireless communication with the transmitter to receive information indicative of the contents of a medication container, time of medication administration and fluid delivery characteristics;

a processor to calculate fluid volume based on fluid delivery characteristic information;

a memory element wherein medication injection information is time stamped and stored;

a communication channel capable of transferring stored data to a medical information system; and

a power source.

19. A system as in claim 18, wherein one or more of the following elements are part of a cellular phone:

receiver, processor, memory, communication channel, power source.

20. A system comprising:

a housing comprising;

a reusable sub-housing and a disposable sub-housing, the reusable sub-housing being operatively coupled to the disposable sub-housing, wherein the reusable sub-housing is intended for use by a plurality of patients and the disposable sub-housing is intended for use by a single patient;

a medication port disposed within the disposable sub-housing configured to be fluidically coupled to a fluid outlet of a medication container;

an identification sensor disposed within the reusable sub-housing to generate information indicative of contents of the medication container when the fluid outlet of the medication container is fluidically coupled to the medication port;

a transmitter disposed within the reusable sub-housing and in communication with the identification sensor to wirelessly transmit the information generated by the identification sensor to a remote data collection system; and

a power source disposed within the reusable sub-housing powering the identification sensor and the transmitter.
