Abstract

An intravenous catheter anchoring assembly is disclosed and includes a patient-contacting membrane, a platform, and a retaining strap for securing a catheter or tubing of an administration set to a patient. The strap is attached to the platform with adjustable pull-tabs that permit a variety of catheter shapes and sizes to be secured. The strap is also elastomeric so that the strap is stretchable and thereby grabs the secured catheter. The strap and platform further define a plurality of passageways that permit the catheter to be secured in a plurality of non-aligned directions.

Claims

1. An anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, the device comprising:

a platform having at least one trough and at least one tubing catch projecting inwardly relative to the at least one trough;

a plurality of connectors disposed on the platform; and

a retaining strap cooperating with the plurality of connectors to define a passageway between the retaining strap and the at least one trough, the passageway being configured to receive a portion of the catheter.

2. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the retaining strap comprises an elastomeric body, the body being elastically stretched when the catheter portion is received in the passageway.

3. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the body is configured so that strain varies along the length thereof when the body is elastically stretched.

4. The anchoring device as in claim 2, wherein the body includes a plurality of discrete attachment locations spaced along the length of the body, with each of the attachment locations being releasably connectable to at least one of the plurality of connectors.

5. The anchoring device as in claim 2, wherein the body comprises spaced apart pull-tabs.

6. The anchoring device as in claim 5, wherein the pull-tabs are removably attached to a corresponding one of the plurality of connectors.

7. The anchoring device as in claim 5, wherein the plurality of connectors each include a post extending from the platform for receiving the pull-tabs.

8. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the at least one trough has an arcuate cross-sectional shape.

9. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the trough includes opposite ends, the trough sloping downwardly toward one of the ends thereof.

10. The anchoring device as in claim 9 further comprising a stop disposed near one of the ends of the trough so as to resist axial movement of the catheter along the trough in the direction of the stop.

11. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the trough extends at least partially around the catheter portion.

12. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the trough has a maximum cross-sectional dimension and the at least one tubing catch projects inwardly relative to the maximum cross-sectional dimension.

13. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the at least one trough extends about an arc equal to or less than about 180 degrees, and the tubing catch extends radially inward relative to the arc.

14. The anchoring device as in claim 1, wherein the platform includes a plurality of troughs and a plurality of tubing catches.

15. An anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, the device comprising:

a platform; and

a retaining strap which cooperates with the platform to form multiple non-aligned catheter-receiving passageways, the passageways cooperatively providing multiple catheter orientations relative to the anchoring device.

16. The anchoring device as in claim 15, wherein the platform and the retaining strap are intercoupled at more than two coupling locations, and wherein each of the passageways defines an opening into the passageway, each opening being disposed between adjacent coupling locations.

17. The anchoring device as in claim 15, wherein the retaining strap comprises an elastomeric body, the body being elastically stretched when the catheter is received in one of the multiple non-aligned catheter-receiving passageways.

18. An anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, wherein the catheter includes a distal section configured to be at least partially inserted into the patient, a proximal section, and a suture hub intermediate of the proximal and distal sections, with the suture hub including a body and wings extending in an outward direction from the body, the device comprising:

a platform configured for attachment to the patient and having an internal platform surface, an outer perimeter, and at least two pairs of connectors disposed about the outer perimeter; and

an elastomeric strap cooperating with the at least two pairs of connectors to define a catheter-receiving passageway configured to receive the suture hub with the proximal and distal sections projecting outwardly therefrom, the catheter-receiving passageway defining a wing-receiving section between adjacent ones of the connectors, with each wing-receiving section configured to receive one of the wings of the suture hub therein.

19. The anchoring device as in claim 18, wherein the retaining strap includes at least two spaced apart discrete attachment locations, with each of the attachment locations being releasably connectable to a respective one of the at least two pairs of connectors.

20. The anchoring device as in claim 18, wherein the retaining strap comprises a body, the body being elastically stretched when the suture hub is received in the catheter-receiving passageway.
