Abstract

A map user interface is described, including a first view transmitted from a server computer system to the client computer system, the first view including a map, and a location marker placed at the selected location on the map upon receiving a placement request indicating selection of a selected location for placement of a location marker.

Claims

1. A method of interfacing with a client computer system, comprising:

transmitting a first view from a server computer system to the client computer system, the first view including a map allowing a user to select a location;

receiving a placement request indicating selection at the client computer system of a selected location for placement of a location marker; and

placing the location marker at the selected location on the map.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the placement request is received at the server computer system and the location marker is transmitted from the server computer system to the client computer system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the placement request is received at the server computer system, further comprising:

searching for an address at or near the selected location; and

transmitting the address from the server computer system to the client computer system.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the address is displayed on the map.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the selected location of the location marker is an initial location of the location marker on the map, the location marker being movable from the initial location to a target location on the map.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

calculating a path from a starting location to an ending location; and

displaying the path on the map, wherein at least one of the starting location and the ending location is the selected location.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

adjusting the path on the map.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the path is adjustable by moving the starting location on the map.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the path is adjustable by moving the ending location on the map.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the path is adjustable by moving an intermediate location between the starting location and the ending location on the path relatively on the map.

11. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

receiving a deletion command from the client computer system at the server computer system, the deletion command being indicative of removal of a selected one of the locations;

calculating a modified path that includes all of the locations but does not pass through the selected location; and

transmitting a second view from the server computer system to the client computer system, the second view including a second map and the modified path displayed on the second map.

12. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

receiving a reordering command from the client computer system at the server computer system;

in response to the reordering command, calculating a modified path that includes all of the locations but following a sequence other than from a starting location via the intermediate location to the selected location; and

transmitting a second view from a server computer system to the client computer system, the second view including a second map and the modified path displayed on the second map.

13. The method of claim 6, wherein the path is a first path representing a first mode of transportation, further comprising:

calculating the first path representing the first mode of transportation from a starting location to an end location;

transmitting the first view from a server computer system to the client computer system, the first view including the map and the first path displayed on the map;

calculating a second path representing a second mode of transportation from the starting location to the end location, the second path being at least partially different from the first path; and

displaying the second path on the map.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an aerial view command from the client computer system at the server computer system; and

in response to the aerial view command, displaying an aerial photograph below the map.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the map is a street map.

16. A computer-readable medium, having stored thereon a set of instructions which, when executed by a processor of a computer, performs the method comprising:

transmitting a first view from a server computer system to the client computer system, the first view including a map allowing a user to select a location;

receiving a placement request indicating selection at the client computer system of a selected location for placement of a location marker; and

placing the location marker at the selected location on the map.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the placement request is received at the server computer system and the location marker is transmitted from the server computer system to the client computer system.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the placement request is received at the server computer system, further comprising:

searching for an address at or near the selected location; and

transmitting the address from the server computer system to the client computer system.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the address is displayed on the map.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the selected location of the location marker is an initial location of the location marker on the map, the location marker being movable from the initial location to a target location on the map.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, the method further comprising:

calculating a path from a starting location to an ending location; and

displaying the path on the map, wherein at least one of the starting location and the ending location is the selected location.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, the method further comprising:

adjusting the path on the map.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, wherein the path is adjustable by moving the starting location on the map.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, wherein the path is adjustable by moving the ending location on the map.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, wherein the path is adjustable by moving an intermediate location between the starting location and the ending location on the path relatively on the map.

26. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, further comprising:

receiving a deletion command from the client computer system at the server computer system, the deletion command being indicative of removal of a selected one of the locations;

calculating a modified path that includes all of the locations but does not pass through the selected location; and

transmitting a second view from the server computer system to the client computer system, the second view including a second map and the modified path displayed on the second map.

27. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, further comprising:

receiving a reordering command from the client computer system at the server computer system;

in response to the reordering command, calculating a modified path that includes all of the locations but following a sequence other than from a starting location via the intermediate location to the selected location; and

transmitting a second view from a server computer system to the client computer system, the second view including a second map and the modified path displayed on the second map.

28. The computer-readable medium of claim 21, wherein the path is a first path representing a first mode of transportation, further comprising:

calculating a second path representing a second mode of transportation from the starting location to the end location, the second path being at least partially different from the first path; and

displaying the second path on the map.

29. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, further comprising:

receiving an aerial view command from the client computer system at the server computer system; and

in response to the aerial view command displaying an aerial photograph below the map.

30. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the map is a street map.

31. A method of interfacing with a client computer system including a interactive video display, the method comprising:

transmitting a first view from a server computer system to the client computer system, the first view including a first map displayed to a user via the interactive video display such that execution of an action, by the user, with the interactive video display allows a user to select a location on the first map for placement of a location marker;

receiving a placement request indicating selection at the client computer system of the selected location on the map for placement of the location marker; and

placing the location marker at the selected location on the map by the server computer system.
