1. A method of supporting an operation of a sleep mode in a broadband wireless access system, the method comprising:

  • transmitting, by a mobile station (MS) to a base station (BS), a sleep request message;

    receiving, by the MS from the BS, a sleep response message allowing the MS to enter the sleep mode, wherein the sleep response message includes a sleep identifier (SLPID); and

    receiving, by the MS from the BS, a traffic indication (MOB-TRF-IND) message, wherein the traffic indication message is received when the MS'"'"'s periodic ranging is scheduled to start even if there is no downlink data to be transmitted to the MS,wherein the traffic indication message includes a format (FMT) field indicating which one of an SLPID bit-map based format and an SLPID based format is used for configuring the traffic indication message, andwherein the traffic indication message further includes the SLPID of the MS, but not an SLPID bit-map, when the SLPID based format is indicated in the format field of the traffic indication message such that the traffic indication message is formatted based only on the SLPID that is allocated by the sleep response message.
