receive signals a from a relay node using a first frequency during a first phase; determine channel state information and/or determine a channel response for a wireless channel associated with the first frequency based on the signals received at the access gateway from the relay node during the first phase; precode data for transmission to the relay node based on the determined channel state information and/or channel response for the channel associated with the first frequency; and transmit the precoded data to the relay node using the first frequency during a second phase or normal operation phase.

receive signals a from a second relay node using a first frequency during a first phase; determine channel state information and/or determine a channel response for a wireless channel associated with the first frequency based on the signals received at the first relay node from the second relay node during the first phase; precode data for transmission to the second relay node based on the determined channel state information and/or channel response for the channel associated with the first frequency; and transmit the precoded data to the second relay node using the first frequency during a second phase or normal operation phase.
