Abstract

The present invention relates to medical cutting tools for treating aortic septal dissections. The cutting tool is provided with a delivery catheter and has a remotely actuated cutting blade or cutting wire component. The cutting tool is provided with at least one displacement element. The displacement element assists in placement of the cutting tool at a desired location. The displacement element also assists in maintaining contact between the cutting blade and tissue being cut.

Claims

1. A medical cutting tool comprising:

a catheter having at least one self-expanding displacement element attached to said delivery catheter;

at least one translatable cutting edge incorporated with said catheter, said translatable cutting edge being actuated with an elongate member; and

a housing for said translatable cutting edge attached to said catheter.

2. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising at least one displacement element having two ends and at least one moveable collar attached to one end of said at least one displacement element;

and

wherein one end of said displacement element is attached to said catheter.

3. The medical device of claim 2 further comprising a flexible atraumatic end portion.

4. The medical device of claim 1 further comprising a housing configured to contain a guidewire.

5. A medical cutting tool comprising:

a catheter having a length and at least one hollow space running at least a portion of said length of said catheter;

at least one flexible metallic strip attached at one end to an end region of said delivery catheter;

a cutting blade assembly attached to said catheter, said cutting blade assembly having a translatable cutting blade attached on a first non-cuffing side to a movable elongate member located within and running at least a portion of the length of said catheter and a blade housing member attached to said translatable cutting blade on a second non-cutting side, wherein said cutting blade projects from said cutting blade assembly in a direction substantially opposite to said at least one flexible metallic strip; and

a housing member attached to said end region of said catheter and enclosing at least a portion of said blade housing member.

6. The medical cutting tool of claim 5 wherein said housing member is flexible.

7. The medical cutting tool of claim 5 wherein said metallic strip is configured as an expandable displacement element.

8. The medical cutting tool of claim 7 wherein said expandable displacement element is self-expanding.

9. The medical cutting tool of claim 7 wherein said expandable displacement element is expanded or contracted with a control element.

10. The medical cutting tool of claim 5 further comprising a flexible hollow tube in fluid communication with an end of said translatable cutting blade assembly and an end of said housing.

11. The medical cutting tool of claim 10 further comprising a movable navigation wire threaded through said elongate member, said flexible hollow tube, and said housing.

12. The medical cutting tool of claim 5 further comprising a plurality of metallic strips attached to said catheter.

13. The medical cutting tool of claim 5 wherein one end of said metallic strip is attached to said catheter and an opposite end of said metallic strip is attached to a movable collar surrounding said catheter.

14. The medical cutting tool of claim 12 wherein one end of each metallic strip is attached to said catheter and each opposite end of each metallic strip is attached to a movable collar surrounding said catheter.

15. A medical cutting tool comprising:

a flexible catheter shaft having a length, at least two ends, and a luminal space therein capable of receiving and containing at least one movable guidewire;

a housing having a first substantially rigid portion attached to and extending from one of said at least two ends of said flexible catheter shaft, said first housing portion having a luminal space therein capable of receiving, containing, and guiding said movable guidewire and a movable cutting blade actuator;

a movable cutting blade actuator retained within said first housing portion and extending into said flexible catheter;

an inverted conduit attached at one end to and extending from said first housing portion, said inverted conduit capable of receiving and containing said movable guidewire;

a second portion of said housing attached to and extending from an opposite end of said inverted conduit toward said first housing portion, said second housing portion having a luminal space therein capable of containing and guiding a movable cutting blade support member;

a movable cutting blade attached to said movable cutting blade actuator and said movable cutting blade support member;

a movable ring-shaped element surrounding said flexible catheter shaft; and

at least one flexible strip having a length and at least two ends, wherein one end is attached to said movable ring-shaped element and another end is attached to said flexible catheter shaft.

16. The medical cutting tool of claim 15 further comprising a plurality of flexible strips having a length and at least two ends, wherein one end is attached to said movable ring-shaped element and another end is attached to said flexible catheter shaft.

17. The medical cutting tool of claim 15 further comprising a flexible atraumatic end portion.

18. The medical device of claim 15 further comprising a housing configured to contain a guidewire.

19. A medical cutting tool comprising:

a catheter having at least one self-expanding displacement element attached to said delivery catheter;

at least one moveable wire having at least one cutting edge incorporated with said catheter, said moveable cutting wire being actuated with an elongate member; and

a housing for said moveable cutting wire attached to said catheter.

20. The medical cutting tool of claim 19 further comprising at least one displacement element having two ends and at least one moveable collar attached to one end of said at least one displacement element;

and

wherein one end of said displacement element is attached to said catheter.

21. The medical cutting tool of claim 20 further comprising a flexible atraumatic end portion.

22. The medical cutting tool of claim 19 further comprising a housing configured to contain a guidewire.

23. A medical cutting tool comprising:

an elongate electrical conductor having a hook-shaped end;

electrical insulation placed on at least a portion of said hook-shaped end such that a portion of said hook-shaped electrical conductor does not have electrical insulation thereon; and

a delivery catheter for said elongate electrical conductor.

24. The medical cutting tool of claim 23 further comprising a radio frequency generator connected to said elongate electrical conductor.

25. The medical cutting tool of claim 23 further comprising at least one displacement element attached to said catheter and said elongate electrical conductor.

26. The medical cutting tool of claim 25 wherein said at least one displacement element is self-expanding.
