Abstract

The invention relates to novel methods of using 2α-methyl-19-nor-20(S)-1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ or 2-methylene-19-nor-20(S)-1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ to prevent Type 1 diabetes in a subject at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes without causing hypercalcemia in the subject.

Claims

1. A method of preventing Type 1 diabetes in a subject at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of 2α

-methyl-19-nor-20(S)-1α

,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃, wherein Type 1 diabetes is prevented from developing in the subject without inducing hypercalcemia in the subject.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the 2α

-methyl-1 g-nor-20(S)-1α

,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ is formulated in an oral, topical, transdermal, parenteral, injection or infusion dosage form.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the therapeutically effective amount comprises ranges from about 100 pg/day to about 500 pg/day.

A method of preventing Type 1 diabetes in a subject at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of 2-methylene-19-nor-20(S)-1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃, wherein Type 1 diabetes is prevented from developing in the subject without inducing hypercalcemia in the subject.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the 2-methylene-19-nor-20(S)-1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ is formulated in an oral, topical, transdermal, parenteral, injection or infusion dosage form.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the therapeutically effective amount ranges from about 0.1 ng/day to about 5 ng/day.
