Abstract

A method and apparatus for providing a plug-in architecture in a real-time web application framework is described. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving an application to be installed on a hub of a real-time web application framework. The method may also include installing the application on an entry point of the hub, the application one of a plurality of different types of applications to be automatically run by the hub.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method:

receiving an application to be installed on a hub server computer system of a real-time web application framework; and

installing the application on an entry point of the hub, the application one of a plurality of different types of applications to be automatically run by the hub.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the application is installed utilizing a package-based installation mechanism

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the applications are detectable by the hub upon start-up by scanning entry points.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the application specifies a topic, the topic an abstraction of one a plurality of messaging queues implemented by a message broker.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the hub executes the application in conjunction with a web stack executed by a web server, the hub to execute the application outside of the web stack.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the server computer system operates independent of the web server.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

loading each application installed on the hub; and

running the loaded applications according to one or more configuration parameters associated with the applications.

8. A computer readable storage medium that provides instructions, which when executed on a processing system cause the processing system to perform a method comprising:

receiving an application to be installed on a hub of a real-time web application framework; and

installing the application on an entry point of the hub, the application one of a plurality of different types of applications to be automatically run by the hub.

9. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the application is installed utilizing a package-based installation mechanism

10. The computer readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein the applications are detectable by the hub upon start-up by scanning entry points.

11. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the application specifies a topic, the topic an abstraction of one a plurality of messaging queues implemented by a message broker.

12. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the hub executes the application in conjunction with a web stack executed by a web server, the hub to execute the application outside of the web stack.

13. The computer readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the server computer system operates independent of the web server.

14. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

loading each application installed on the hub; and

running the loaded applications according to one or more configuration parameters associated with the applications.

15. A system comprising:

a memory to store applications; and

a processor coupled with the memory to

receive an application to be installed on a hub of a real-time web application framework, and

installing the application on an entry point of the hub, the application one of a plurality of different types of applications to be automatically run by the hub.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the processor is further to load each application installed on the hub, and run the loaded applications according to one or more configuration parameters associated with the applications.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the application is installed utilizing a package-based installation mechanism

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the application specifies a topic, the topic an abstraction of one a plurality of messaging queues implemented by a message broker.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the hub executes the application in conjunction with a web stack executed by a web server, the hub to execute the application outside of the web stack.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the server computer system operates independent of the web server.
