Abstract

A system and method for enabling set up of a controlling device capable of controlling a plurality of appliances, via an interactive instruction set and associated programming. The programming is accessible by a STB or other controllable appliance and is configured to appropriately display interactive instructions and prompts to a user during a user initiated set up procedure for configuration of another controllable device (e.g., DVD, VCR, DVR, etc) available to the user. Appropriate set up data, generally in the form of command library codes, is displayed to the user by the interactive instruction set and associated programming for entry and trial by the user in set up of the desired appliance(s).

Claims

1. A method for configuring a controlling device having a plurality of keys, the method comprising:

receiving into the controlling device via an actuation of one or more of the plurality of keys a configuration input where the configuration input is used to configure the controlling device such that, upon a future activation of one or more function keys of the plurality of keys, the controlling device will be caused to transmit one or more commands to command functional operations of at least one intended target controllable appliance; and

transmitting from the controlling device to a receiving device data indicative of the configuration input that was received via actuation of the one or more of the plurality of keys to configure the controlling device.

2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the configuration input is received into the controlling device whilst the controlling device is in a configuration mode.

3. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the controlling device is caused to transmit one or more commands to command functional operations of at lease one intended target controllable appliance whilst the controlling device is in a device controlling mode.

4. The method as recited in claim 1, comprising using at the receiving device the transmitted data indicative of the configuration input to cause an echoing of the one or more of the plurality of keys actuated to provide the configuration input.

5. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein the one or more of the plurality of keys actuated to provide the configuration input comprises those of the plurality of keys having numeric labels.
