Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for providing a flexible download destination are provided. A download request for content transmitted from a first device to a content server is detected. In response to detecting the download request, a determination is made as to whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service. Upon determining that the user of the first device has subscribed to the flexible download destination service, an interface for selecting alternate download destinations is provided. A selection of a second device is received through the interface. A transfer of the content to the second device is coordinated.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for providing a flexible download destination, the method comprising:

detecting a download request for content transmitted from a first device to a content server;

in response to detecting the download request, determining whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service;

upon determining that the user of the first device has subscribed to the flexible download destination service, providing an interface for selecting alternate download destinations;

receiving a selection of a second device through the interface; and

coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein determining whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service comprises determining whether account information of the user contains a media access control (MAC) address or other unique identifier corresponding to the device.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises coordinating the transfer of the content to the first device and the second device.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises instructing the content server to transmit the content to the second device.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises:

requesting the content from the content server;

upon requesting the content from the content server, receiving the content from the content server; and

transferring the content to the second device.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises:

determining whether the second device is available to transfer the content;

in response to determining that the second device is available to transfer the content, coordinating the transfer of the content to the second device; and

in response to determining that the second device is not available to transfer the content,

storing an indication to retry the download in a download queue, and

coordinating the transfer of the content to the second device at a later time in accordance with the indication.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein receiving a selection of a second device through the interface comprises receiving a selection of the second device and a third device;

and wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises coordinating the transfer of the content to the first device, the second device, and the third device.

8. A system for providing a flexible download destination, comprising:

a memory for storing a program containing code for providing the flexible download destination; and

a processor functionally coupled to the memory, the processor being responsive to computer-executable instructions contained in the program and configured to

detect a download request for content transmitted from a first device to a content server,

in response to detecting the download request, determine whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service,

upon determining that the user of the first device has subscribed to the flexible download destination service, provide an interface for selecting alternate download destinations,

receive a selection of a second device through the interface, and

coordinate a transfer of the content to the second device.

The system of claim 8, wherein to determine whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service, the processor is further configured to determine whether account information of the user contains a media access control (MAC) address or other unique identifier corresponding to the device.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein to coordinate a transfer of the content to the second device, the processor is further configured to coordinate the transfer of the content to the first device and the second device.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein to coordinate a transfer of the content to the second device, the processor is further configured to instruct the content server to transmit the content to the second device.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein to coordinate a transfer of the content to the second device, the processor is further configured to

request the content from the content server,

upon requesting the content from the content server, receive the content from the content server, and

transfer the content to the second device.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein to coordinate a transfer of the content to the second device, the processor is further configured to

determine whether the second device is available to transfer the content,

in response to determining that the second device is available to transfer the content, coordinate the transfer of the content to the second device, and

in response to determining that the second device is not available to transfer the content,

store an indication to retry the download in a download queue, and

coordinate the transfer of the content to the second device at a later time in accordance with the indication.

14. A computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon for execution by a processor to provide a method for providing a flexible download destination, the method comprising:

detecting a download request for content transmitted from a first device to a content server;

in response to detecting the download request, determining whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service;

upon determining that the user of the first device has subscribed to the flexible download destination service, providing an interface for selecting alternate download destinations;

receiving a selection of a second device through the interface; and

coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein determining whether a user of the first device has subscribed to a flexible download destination service comprises determining whether account information of the user contains a media access control (MAC) address or other unique identifier corresponding to the device.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises coordinating the transfer of the content to the first device and the second device.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises instructing the content server to transmit the content to the second device.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises:

requesting the content from the content server;

upon requesting the content from the content server, receiving the content from the content server; and

transferring the content to the second device.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises:

determining whether the second device is available to transfer the content;

in response to determining that the second device is available to transfer the content, coordinating the transfer of the content to the second device; and

in response to determining that the second device is not available to transfer the content,

storing an indication to retry the download in a download queue, and

coordinating the transfer of the content to the second device at a later time in accordance with the indication.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein receiving a selection of a second device through the interface comprises receiving a selection of the second device and a third device;

and wherein coordinating a transfer of the content to the second device comprises coordinating the transfer of the content to the first device, the second device, and the third device.
