Abstract

The invention is directed to a therapy device, including a body, an energy source disposed on the body for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, and a material dispensing system disposed on the body for dispensing a desired material for use with the device. Also disclosed are accessories and compositions used with the therapy device, including interchangeable energy source-containing heads and interchangeable material containers. Methods for using the therapy device are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation comprising:

a) an energy source for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation;

b) a material dispensing system for dispensing a desired material for use with the device, said dispensing system being adapted to receive a removable container for containing said desired material and said dispensing system having a sensor for reading an identifier disposed on said removable container; and

c) a control mechanism for controlling the energy source and the material dispensing system, said control mechanism being in communication with said sensor for receiving information concerning said removable container.

2. The device of claim 1 further comprising an energy reflector for reflecting said electromagnetic radiation towards a desired treatment area.

3. The therapy device of claim 1, further comprising a substrate for supporting the energy source.

4. The therapy device of claim 3 wherein the energy reflector is disposed between the substrate and the energy source.

5. The device of claim 2 wherein the energy reflector has a generally planar surface.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein the control mechanism includes a processor and a storage device;

the storage device being operable to maintain regimen data;

the processor being operable to control the energy source and the material dispensing system in accordance with the regimen data.

7. The device of claim 6 wherein the control mechanism is operable to control the emission of radiation from the energy source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the regimen data.

8. The device of claim 7 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the regimen data.

9. The device of claim 7 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the regimen data.

10. The device of claim 6 wherein the storage device is removable.

11. The device of claim 6 wherein said device is further operable to maintain, in said storage device, logging data representing a usage of the therapy device.

12. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source is a light source.

13. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source is selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, microwaves, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

14. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source comprises at least one light emitting diode.

15. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source has at least one peak wavelength selected from about 410, 415, 580, 630, 660, 663, 680, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, and 900 nm.

16. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source comprises at least one peak wavelength having a band width of about 20 to 40 nm.

17. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source has a peak wavelength of about 415 nm and a bandwidth of about 20 nm.

18. The device of claim 1 wherein the energy source operates in a pulsed manner when activated.

19. The device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the energy source is housed within a head having a faceplate that is integral to the structure of the head.

20. The device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the energy source is housed within a head having a removable faceplate.

21. The device as claimed in claim 19 wherein the faceplate includes an extension that is functionally connected to the head.

22. The device as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a temperature sensing device for delivering temperature data to said control mechanism, said temperature data concerning the temperature associated with a desired treatment area during operation of said device.

23. The device as claimed in claim 22 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the energy source when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

24. The device as claimed in claim 22 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

25. The therapy device as claimed in claim 1 wherein said energy source, said material dispensing system, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

194. Use of the device of claim 1 for improving the appearance of the skin of a user.

26. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation comprising:

a) an energy source for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation;

b) a material dispensing system for dispensing a desired material for use with the device;

c) a control mechanism for controlling the energy source and the material dispensing system; and

d) a processor and a storage device included in the control mechanism;

the storage device being operable to maintain data representing a usage of the therapy device and the processor being operable to control the energy source and the material dispensing system in accordance with the data.

27. The device of claim 26 further comprising an energy reflector for reflecting said electromagnetic radiation towards a desired treatment area.

28. The therapy device of claims 26, further comprising a substrate for supporting the energy source.

29. The therapy device of claim 28 wherein the energy reflector is disposed between the substrate and the energy source.

30. The device of claim 27 wherein the energy reflector has a generally planar surface.

31. The device of claim 26 wherein the processor is operable to control the emission of radiation from the energy source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the data.

32. The device of claim 26 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the data.

33. The device of claim 26 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the data.

34. The device of claim 26 wherein the storage device is removable.

35. The device of claim 26 wherein the energy source is a light source.

36. The device of claim 26 wherein the energy source is selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, microwaves, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

37. The device of claim 26 wherein the energy source comprises at least one light emitting diode.

38. The device of claim 26 wherein the energy source has at least one peak wavelength selected from about 410, 415, 580, 630, 660, 663, 680, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, and 900 nm.

39. The device of claim 26 twherein the energy source comprises at least one peak wavelength having a band width of about 20 to 40 nm.

40. The device of claim 26 wherein the energy source has a peak wavelength of about 415 nm and a bandwidth of about 20 nm.

41. The device of claim 26 wherein the energy source operates in a pulsed manner when activated.

42. The device as claimed in claim 26 wherein the energy source is housed within a head having a faceplate that is integral to the structure of the head.

43. The device as claimed in claim 26 wherein the energy source is housed within a head having a removable faceplate.

44. The device as claimed in claim 26 wherein the dispensing system is adapted to receive a removable container for containing the material.

45. The device as claimed in claim 44 wherein the dispensing system has a sensor for reading an identifier that is disposed on the container.

46. The device of claim 42 wherein the faceplate includes an extension that is functionally connected to the head.

47. The device of claim 26 further comprising a temperature sensing device for delivering temperature data to said control mechanism, said temperature data concerning the temperature associated with the desired treatment area during operation of said device.

48. The device of claim 47 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the energy source when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

49. The device of claim 47 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

50. The therapy device as claimed in claim 26 wherein said energy source, said material dispensing system, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

51. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation comprising:

a) a light source for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation;

b) a material dispensing system for dispensing a desired material for use with the device;

c) a control mechanism for controlling the light source and the material dispensing system; and

d) a temperature sensing device for delivering temperature data to said control mechanism, said temperature data concerning the temperature associated with a desired treatment area during operation of said device.

52. The device of claim 51 further comprising an energy reflector for reflecting said electromagnetic radiation towards said desired treatment area.

53. The therapy device of claim 51, further comprising a substrate for supporting the light source.

54. The therapy device of claim 53 wherein the energy reflector is disposed between the substrate and the light source.

55. The device of claim 52 wherein the energy reflector has a generally planar surface.

56. The device of claim 51 wherein the control mechanism includes a processor and a storage device;

the storage device being operable to maintain regimen data;

the processor being operable to control the light source and the material dispensing system in accordance with the regimen data.

57. The device of claim 51 wherein the control mechanism is operable to control the emission of radiation from the light source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the regimen data.

58. The device of claim 56 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the regimen data.

59. The device of claim 56 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the regimen data.

60. The device of claim 56 wherein the storage device is removable.

61. The device of claim 56 wherein said device is further operable to maintain, in said storage device, logging data representing a usage of the therapy device.

62. The device of claim 51 wherein the light source is selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

63. The device of claim 51 wherein the light source comprises at least one light emitting diode.

64. The device of claim 51 wherein the light source has at least one peak wavelength selected from about 410, 415, 580, 630, 660, 663, 680, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, and 900 nm.

65. The device of claim 51 wherein the light source comprises at least one peak wavelength having a band width of about 20 to 40 nm.

66. The device of claim 51 wherein the light source has a peak wavelength of about 415 nm and a bandwidth of about 20 nm.

67. The device of claim 51 wherein the light source operates in a pulsed manner when activated.

68. The device as claimed in claim 51 wherein the light source is housed within a head having a faceplate that is integral to the structure of the head.

69. The device as claimed in claim 51 wherein the light source is housed within a head having a removable faceplate.

70. The device as claimed in claim 51 wherein the dispensing system is adapted to receive a removable container for containing the material.

71. The device as claimed in claim 70 wherein the dispensing system has a sensor for reading an identifier that is disposed on the container.

72. The device of claim 68 wherein the faceplate includes an extension that is functionally connected to the head.

73. The device of claim 51 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the light source when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

74. The device of claim 51 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

75. The therapy device as claimed in claim 51 wherein said light source, said material dispensing system, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

76. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation comprising:

a) an energy source disposed in a head of said device for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation;

b) a material dispensing system disposed in a body of said device for dispensing a desired material for use with the device, said material dispensing system being fluidly connected to at least one aperture defined in said head for dispensing said material therethrough; and

c) a control mechanism for controlling the energy source.

77. The device of claim 76 wherein the control mechanism also controls the material dispensing system.

78. The device of claim 76 wherein the material dispensing system is manually operated.

79. The device of claim 76 wherein the control mechanism further comprises a storage device and a processor;

the storage device being operable to maintain regimen data;

the processor being operable to control the material dispensing system and the energy source in accordance with the regimen data.

80. The device of claim 79 wherein the control mechanism is operable to control the emission of radiation from the energy source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the regimen data.

81. The device of claim 79 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the regimen data.

82. The device of claim 79 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the regimen data.

83. The device of claim 79 wherein the storage device is removable.

84. The device of claim 79 wherein said device is further operable to maintain, in said storage device, logging data representing a usage of the therapy device.

85. The device of claim 76 further comprising a temperature sensing device for delivering temperature data to said control mechanism, said temperature data concerning the temperature associated with a desired treatment area.

86. The device of claim 85 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the energy source when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

87. The device of claim 85 wherein the temperature sensing device is positioned to sense the temperature at the interface of the device and a therapeutic treatment area.

88. The device of claim 85 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

89. The device of claim 76 further comprising an energy reflector for reflecting said electromagnetic radiation towards a desired treatment area.

90. The therapy device of claim 76 further comprising a substrate for supporting the energy source.

91. The therapy device of claim 90 wherein the energy reflector is disposed between the substrate and the energy source.

92. The device of claim 89 wherein the energy reflector has a generally planar surface.

93. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source is a light source.

94. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source is selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

95. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source comprises at least one light emitting diode.

96. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source has at least one peak wavelength selected from about 410, 415, 580, 630, 660, 663, 680, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, and 900 nm.

97. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source comprises at least one peak wavelength having a band width of about 20 to 40 nm.

98. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source has a peak wavelength of about 415 nm and a bandwidth of about 20 nm.

99. The device of claim 76 wherein the energy source operates in a pulsed manner when activated.

100. The therapy device as claimed in claim 76 wherein said energy source, said material dispensing system, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

204. A material for use with the device of claim 77.

205. A material according to claim 204 further comprising a medicament, active ingredient, or supplement.

206. The material of claim 204 wherein the index of refraction of the material is approximately 1.5.

207. The material of claim 205 wherein the medicament, active ingredient, or supplement is selected from the group consisting of aloe, Vitamin E, a hydration agent, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Vitamin F, Retin A (Tretinoin), Adapalene, Retinol, Hydroquinone, Kojic acid, a growth factor, echinacea, an antibiotic, an antifungal, an antiviral, a bleaching agent, an alpha hydroxy acid, a beta hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, antioxidant triad compound, a seaweed derivative, a salt water derivative, algae, an antioxidant, a phytoanthocyanin, phthalocyanine, a phytonutrient, plankton, a botanical product, a herbaceous product, a hormone, lanolin, an enzyme, a mineral, a genetically engineered substance, a cofactor, a catalyst, an antiaging substance, insulin, trace elements (including ionic calcium, magnesium, etc.), Coenzyme Q10, minerals, minoxidil, a dye, a natural or synthetic melanin, a metalloproteinase inhibitor, proline, hydroxyproline, an anesthetic substance, benzoyl peroxide, amino levulinic acid, chlorophyll, bacteriachlorophyll, neutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, copper chlorophyllin, chloroplasts, carotenoids, phycobilin, rhodopsin, anthocyanin, and derivatives, subcomponents, immunological complexes and antibodies directed towards any component of the target skin structure or apparatus, and analogs of the above items both synthetic and natural, as well as combinations thereof.

208. The material of claim 204 wherein the medicament, active ingredient, or supplement is for the treatment selected from a group consisting of anti-aging treatment, photorejuvenation treatment, cosmetic treatment, acne treatment, cancer treatment, cellulite treatment, and photodamage treatment.

209. The material of claim 204 wherein the treatment is for acne treatment.

210. The material of claim 204 wherein the treatment is for photorejuvenation treatment.

211. The material of claim 205 wherein the medicament, active ingredient, or supplement is benzoyl peroxide.

212. The material of claim 205 wherein the medicament, active ingredient or supplement is salicylic acid.

101. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation comprising:

a) a light source disposed on a substrate in a head of said device for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation;

b) a light energy reflector disposed between said light source and said substrate for reflecting electromagnetic radiation, said light energy reflector having a generally planar surface; and

c) a control mechanism for controlling said light source in accordance with a desired therapeutic treatment.

102. The device of claim 101 further comprising a material dispensing system for dispensing a desired material.

103. The device of claim 102 further comprising a control mechanism for controlling the light source and the material dispensing system.

104. The device of claim 103 wherein the control mechanism includes a processor and a storage device;

the storage device being operable to maintain regimen data;

the processor being operable to control the light source and the material dispensing system in accordance with the regimen data.

105. The device of claim 103 or wherein the control mechanism is operable to control the emission of radiation from the light source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the regimen data.

106. The device of claim 104 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the regimen data.

107. The device of claim 104 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the regimen data.

108. The device of claim 104 wherein the storage device is removable.

109. The device of claim 104 wherein said device is further operable to maintain, in said storage device, logging data representing a usage of the therapy device.

110. The device of claim 101 wherein the light source is selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

111. The device of claim 101 wherein the light source comprises at least one light emitting diode.

116. The device as claimed in claim 102 to wherein the dispensing system is adapted to receive a removable container for containing the material.

117. The device as claimed in claim 116 wherein the dispensing system has a sensor for reading an identifier that is disposed on the container.

118. The device of claim 101 wherein the head includes a removable faceplate containing the light source that is functionally connected to the head.

119. The device of claim 101 further comprising a temperature sensing device for delivering temperature data to said control mechanism, said temperature data concerning the temperature associated with a desired treatment area.

120. The device of claim 119 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the light source when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

121. The device of claim 119 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

122. The therapy device as claimed in claim 101 wherein said light source, said light energy reflector, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

123. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation to a skin surface, said device comprising:

a) a light source for emitting a desired wavelength of electromagnetic radiation for treating a desired treatment area of said skin surface;

b) a temperature sensor for sensing the temperature at said treatment area during application of said electromagnetic radiation from said light source; and

c) a control mechanism for controlling the light source, said control mechanism including a processor for receiving and processing temperature data received from said temperature sensor during application of said electromagnetic radiation from said light source.

124. The device of claim 123 further comprising a light energy reflector disposed on the device for reflecting light energy towards said treatment area.

125. The therapy device of claim 123, further comprising a substrate for supporting the light source.

126. The therapy device of claim 124 wherein the light energy reflector layer is disposed between the substrate and the light source.

127. The device of claim 124 wherein the light energy reflector layer has a generally planar surface.

128. The device of claim 123 further comprising a material dispensing system for dispensing a desired material.

129. The device of claim 128 wherein the control mechanism controls the material dispensing system.

130. The device of claim 128 wherein the control mechanism further includes a storage device;

the storage device being operable to maintain regimen data;

the processor being operable to control the light source and the material dispensing system in accordance with the regimen data.

131. The device of claim 130 wherein the control mechanism is operable to control the emission of radiation from the light source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the regimen data.

132. The device of claim 130 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the regimen data.

133. The device of claim 130 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the regimen data.

134. The device of claim 130 wherein the storage device is removable.

135. The device of claim 130 wherein said device is further operable to maintain, in said storage device, logging data representing a usage of the therapy device.

136. The device of claim 123 wherein the light source is selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

137. The device of claim 123 wherein the light source comprises at least one light emitting diode.

138. The device of claim 123 wherein the light source has at least one peak wavelength selected from about 410, 415, 580, 630, 660, 663, 680, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, and 900 nm.

139. The device of claim 123 wherein the light source comprises at least one peak wavelength having a band width of about 20 to 40 nm.

140. The device of claim 123 wherein the light source has a peak wavelength of about 415 nm and a bandwidth of about 20 nm.

141. The device of claim 123 wherein the light source operates in a pulsed manner when activated.

142. The device as claimed in claim 123 wherein the light source is disposed on a faceplate that is removable from a body of the device while still being operable.

143. The device as claimed in claim 128 wherein the dispensing system is adapted to receive a removable container for containing the material.

144. The device as claimed in claim 143 wherein the dispensing system has a sensor for reading an identifier that is disposed on the container.

145. The device of claim 123 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the light source when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

146. The device of claim 123 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

147. The therapy device as claimed in claim 123 wherein said light source, said temperature sensor, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

174. Use of the device of claims 123 for a treatment of an ailment selected from the group consisting of arthritic pain, chronic pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, cellular damage, soft tissue injury, acne, TMJ, diabetic neuropathy, neuralgia, aging skin, seasonally affected disorder, inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles, mucositis, psoriasis, rosacia, eczema, oral candida, oral cancer, cellulitis, and wounds.

175. Use of the device of claim 123 for the treatment of acne.

176. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 380 to about 460 nm

177. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 395 to about 430 nm.

178. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 405 to about 425 nm.

179. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 460 to about 1000 nm.

180. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 550 to about 900 nm.

181. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 600 nm to about 850 nm.

182. The use of device of claim 175 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation at about 630 nm.

183. Use of the device of claim 123 for photorejuvenation therapy.

184. The use of device of claim 183 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 500 nm to about 1000 nm.

185. The use of device of claim 183 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 550 nm to about 900 nm.

186. The use of of device claim 183 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 570 nm to about 850 nm.

187. The use of device of claim 183 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation at an emission selected from the group consisting of about 580 nm, about 630 nm, about 633 nm, about 660 nm, about 810 nm, about 830 nm, about 900 nm, and combinations thereof.

189. The use of device of claim 188 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 500 nm to about 1000 nm.

191. The use of device of device claim 188 wherein the energy source emits electromagnetic radiation in the range of about 570 nm to about 850 nm.

192. The use of device of claim 188 wherein the energy source emits laser or LED energy at about 810 nm.

193. The use of device of device claim 188 wherein the energy source emits a combination of radiofrequency and infrared radiation.

148. A therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation comprising:

a) a plurality of light sources disposed in a head for emitting electromagnetic radiation at a plurality of wavelengths;

b) a material dispensing system for dispensing a desired material for use with the device; and

c) a control mechanism for controlling said plurality of light sources.

149. The device of claim 148 wherein the control mechanism activates certain of said light sources that emit electromagnetic radiation at a desired wavelength.

150. The device of claim 148 a wherein the control mechanism includes a processor and a storage device;

the storage device being operable to maintain data representing a usage of the therapy device and the processor being operable to control the plurality of light sources and the material dispensing system in accordance with the data.

151. The device of claim 148 further comprising a light energy reflector for reflecting said electromagnetic radiation towards a desired treatment area.

152. The therapy device of claim 148 further comprising a substrate for supporting the plurality of light sources.

153. The therapy device of claim 152 wherein the light energy reflector is disposed between the substrate and the plurality of light sources.

154. The device of claim 151 wherein the light energy reflector has a generally planar surface.

155. The device of claim 150 wherein the processor is operable to control the emission of radiation from the plurality of light sources at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the data.

156. The device of claim 150 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device for updating the data.

157. The device of claim 150 further comprising an interface operable to conduct communications with a computer network having at least one server for updating the data.

158. The device of claim 150 wherein the storage device is removable.

159. The device of claim 148 wherein the plurality of light sources are selected from the group consisting of electrodeless lamps, fluorescent tube, quartz halogen lamp, arc lamp, laser, laser diode, and light emitting diode.

160. The device of claim 148 wherein the plurality of light sources comprise at least one light emitting diode.

161. The device of claim 148 wherein the plurality of light sources have at least one peak wavelength selected from about 410, 415, 580, 630, 660, 663, 680, 800, 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, and 900 nm.

162. The device of claim 148 wherein the plurality of light sources comprise at least one peak wavelength having a band width of about 20 to 40 nm.

163. The device of claim 148 wherein the plurality of light sources have a peak wavelength of about 415 nm and a bandwidth of about 20 nm.

164. The device of claim 148 wherein the plurality of light sources operate in a pulsed manner when activated.

165. The device as claimed in claim 148 wherein the head has a faceplate that is integral to the structure of the head.

166. The device as claimed in claim 148 wherein the head has a removable faceplate.

167. The device as claimed in claim 148 wherein the dispensing system is adapted to receive a removable container for containing the material.

168. The device as claimed in claim 167 wherein the dispensing system has a sensor for reading an identifier that is disposed on the container.

169. The device of claim 165 wherein the faceplate includes an extension that is functionally connected to the head.

170. The device of claim 148 further comprising a temperature sensing device for delivering temperature data to said control mechanism, said temperature data concerning the temperature associated with the desired treatment area.

171. The device of claim 170 wherein the control mechanism can adjust the plurality of light sources when the received temperature data is outside pre-specified limits.

172. The device of claim 170 wherein the temperature sensing device is a p-n junction diode.

173. The therapy device as claimed in claim 148 wherein said plurality of light sources, said material dispensing system, and said control mechanism are disposed in a unitary body.

A container adapted for use with a therapy device for delivering electromagnetic radiation, said container comprising a hollow body, a material disposed within said hollow body for use with said therapy device, and a passage for allowing said material to be dispensed from said container for use with said therapy device.

196. The container of claim 195 wherein said material has an index of refraction of approximately 1.5.

197. The container of claim 195 wherein said material contains a medicament, active ingredient or supplement.

198. The container of claim 197 wherein the medicament is for a treatment selected from the group consisting of anti-aging treatment, photorejuvenation treatment, cosmetic treatment, acne treatment, cancer treatment, cellulite treatment, and photodamage treatment.

199. The container of claim 197 wherein the medicament is for photorejuvenation treatment.

200. The container of claim 197 wherein the medicament is for acne treatment.

201. The container for claim 197 wherein the medicament is for cellulite treatment.

202. The container of claim 195 further comprising an indicator disposed on said body and adapted to be read by a reader disposed within a therapy device.

203. A material for use with treatment using electromagnetic radiation comprising at least one of a medicament, active ingredient, or supplement and having an index of refraction of approximately 1.5.

213. A faceplate comprising a substrate for supporting an energy source;

at least one aperture in said substrate for passing a material therethrough;

a mount for attaching said substrate to a body;

said body housing a control mechanism for controlling said energy source and a container for storing said material.

214. The faceplate of claim 213 further comprising a connector disposed within said substrate that communicates with said control mechanism when mount is attached to said body.

215. The faceplate of claim 214 wherein the connector transmits power from a power source in said body to said energy source.

216. The faceplate of claim 213 further comprising an identification device that communicates the identity of the faceplate to the control mechanism.

217. The faceplate of claim 213 further comprising a memory storage device for storing regimen data.

218. The faceplate of claim 213 further comprising an outer surface affixed generally parallel to the substrate with said energy source disposed therebetween, said outer surface defining at least one aperture for passing the material therethrough.

219. A method for controlling a therapy device having an energy source for emitting radiation, a material dispensing system for dispensing a material and a controller that is operably connected to the energy source and the material dispensing system;

said method comprising the steps of;

receiving, at the controller, regimen data representing a treatment regimen; and

controlling the energy source and the material dispensing system in accordance with the regimen data.

220. The method of claim 219 wherein said regimen data is a set of data maintained in a database disposed in the device.

221. The method of claim 219 wherein the controlling step includes controlling the dispensing of said material from said material dispensing system.

222. The method of claim 219 wherein the controlling step includes the steps of:

controlling radiation emission from the energy source at a power level and for a period of time in accordance with the regimen;

receiving temperature data from the device during the time period; and

adjusting the radiation emission when the temperature data is outside a set of limits specified by the regimen data.

223. The method of claim 219 wherein the energy source includes an identifier for specifying the type of the energy source.

224. The method of claim 219 wherein the material dispensing system includes an identifier for specifying the type of the material.

225. The method of claim 219 wherein said therapy device includes an interface operable to conduct communications with a computing device and the method further comprises the steps of

storing logging data representing a usage of the therapy device;

establishing a link with the computing device; and

transmitting the logging data to the computing device.
