Abstract

A hospital layout comprising a plurality of adjacent OR/intervention rooms (46, 48) uniquely configured and equipped to perform surgical and other interventional procedures, with adjacent intubation rooms (52) configured and equipped to prepare patients for procedures to occur in the OR/intervention rooms and at least one extubation room (54) adjacent the OR/intervention rooms, configured and equipped to post-intervention awaken and extubate patients. A plurality of universal patient rooms (40) are located adjacent the OR/intervention rooms and universal patient rooms, and are configured and equipped to admit patients for surgery/intervention, prepare patients for surgery/intervention, allow patients to recover post-intervention, and discharge patients post-recovery.

Claims

1. A hospital operating/intervention room configured and equipped to perform surgery and other procedures, comprising:

a surgical/intervention zone of a predetermined area generally surrounding the location where a patient is positionable;

a drop-down ceiling extending over the surgical/intervention zone of a selected width, said ceiling positioned from about seven feet to eight feet from the floor;

a ventilation distribution system incorporated into the drop-down ceiling comprising a plurality of laminar flow air outlets in the drop-down ceiling and a plurality of air exhaust systems adjacent the floor of the operating/intervention room, wherein ventilation air is free to travel in a laminar flow condition from the drop-down ceiling to a surgical site and thence the floor; and

a lighting system incorporated into the drop-down ceiling, said lighting structure comprising;

multiple light sources recessed into the drop-down ceiling;

a movable mounting system for the light sources positioned within the drop-down ceiling;

a powered actuating system for moving the mounting system to aim the lights as desired by operating/intervention room personnel; and

a control system for controlling the powered actuating systems and for controlling the intensity of the light sources.

2. The operating/intervention room according to claim 1, wherein the control system for controlling the powered actuating system for the light system is activated by:

controllers or radio frequency identification tags mounted on gloves, arm bands, wrist bands, head bands, or other substances worn by operating/intervention room personnel or equipment used by operating/intervention room personnel;

or

voice commands.

3. The operating/intervention room according to claim 1, wherein the moveable mounting system is independently moveable about first and second axes disposed transversely to each other.

4. The operating/intervention room according to claim 3, wherein a lighting system comprising:

an array of LED lights mounted on a carrier;

said carrier rotatably connected to a support yoke adapted to rotate about the first axis relative to the support yoke; and

a support shaft supporting the support yoke for rotation about said second axis.

5. The operating/intervention room of claim 1, wherein the surgical/intervention zone is of a shape selected from the group consisting of circular, oval, triangular, rectangular, or square.

6. The operating/intervention room of claim 1, further comprising an overhead mounting system positioned outside of the surgical/intervention zone for supporting at least one of the following:

utility supply source;

medical gas supply source;

data connection;

communications connection;

tables;

work surfaces;

intervention equipment;

supply cabinets;

lasers; and

cauteries.

7. The operating/intervention room according to claim 1, further comprising an interstitial corridor disposed above the elevation of the operating/intervention room to route utilities, gas, data lines and cables, communication lines and cables to and from the operating/intervention room.

8. The operating/intervention room according to claim 1, further comprising a combination surgical table and anesthesia machine detachably dockable to the surgical table.

9. The operating/intervention room of claim 8, wherein said surgical table comprising:

(a) a platform for supporting a patient;

(b) a pedestal extending downwardly from the platform to a mobile floor engaging base supporting the lower end of the pedestal;

(c) arm members at the head end or foot of the platform, said arm members supporting outlets for utilities, gas, data lines and cables, connections located in the floor of the operating/intervention room; and

wherein the mobile floor engaging base permitting the surgical table to be moved throughout the operating/intervention room as well as moved out of the operating/intervention room.

10. The operating/intervention room of claim 9, wherein said anesthesia machine comprising:

portions configured to enable the anesthesia machine to be docked to the surgical table, said anesthesia machine having a connection system to connect the anesthesia machine to utilities, communication lines, cables supplied to the operating/intervention room, and also a connection system to connect the anesthesia machine to the surgical table to transmit utilities, anesthesia gases, communication lines and cables to the surgical table; and

a control system operable from a remote location to control the application of anesthesia gas from the anesthesia machine to patients, and to monitor such patients.

11. The operating/intervention room according to claim 10, wherein one of the surgical table and the anesthesia machine comprising a connection system for connecting to utility outlets, gas outlets, data lines and cable connectors located in the floor of the operating/intervention room.

12. The operating/intervention room according to claim 1, wherein the drop-down ceiling, the ventilation distribution system, and the lighting system are preconstructed into a unitary assembly for installation into the operating/intervention room.

13. A lighting system for a hospital operating/intervention room configured and equipped to perform surgery and other procedures, the operating/intervention room having a ceiling, the lighting system comprising:

(a) multiple light sources recessible into the ceiling;

(b) a movable mounting system for the light sources positioned within the ceiling;

(c) a powered actuating system for moving the mounting system to aim the lights as desired by operating/intervention room personnel; and

(d) a control system for controlling the powered actuating system and for controlling the intensity of the light sources.

14. The lighting system according to claim 13, wherein the control system for controlling the powered actuating system for the lighting system is activated by:

(a) controllers or radio frequency identification tags mounted on gloves, arm bands, wrist bands, head bands, or other items worn by operating/intervention room personnel or equipment used by operating/intervention room personnel;

or

(b) voice commands.

15. The lighting system according to claim 13, wherein the movable mounting system is independently movable about first and second axes disposed transversely to each other.

16. The lighting system according to claim 15, comprising:

(a) an array of LED lights mounted on a carrier, said carrier rotatably connected to a support yoke adapted to rotate about a first axis relative to the support yoke; and

(b) a support shaft supporting the support yoke for rotation about said second axis.

17. A combined surgical table and anesthesia machine, comprising:

(a) a platform for the surgical table for supporting patient;

(b) a pedestal extending downwardly from the platform to a mobile floor engaging base supporting the lower end of the pedestal;

(c) arm members of the head end or foot end of the platforms, said arm members supporting outlets for utilities, gas, data lines and cables;

(d) a mobile floor engaging base permitting the surgical table to be moved throughout the operating/intervention room as well as moved out of the operating/intervention room;

(e) portions of said anesthesia machine configured to enable the anesthesia machine to be docked to the surgical table;

(f) said anesthesia machine having a connection system to connect the anesthesia machine to utilities, communication lines, cables supplied to the operating/intervention room, and also a connection system to connect the anesthesia machine to a surgical table to transmit utilities, anesthesia gases, communication lines and cables to the surgical table; and

(g) control system operable from a remote location to control the application of anesthesia gases from anesthesia machine to patient and to monitor such patients.

18. The combined surgical table and anesthesia machine according to claim 17, wherein the surgical table arm members are movable to a position below the upper surface of the surgical table platform.

19. The combined surgical table and anesthesia machine according to claim 17, wherein the connection system of the anesthesia machine is configured for connecting to utility outlets, gas outlets, data lines and cable connectors located in the floor of the operating/intervention room.
