Abstract

An automated network registration and activation system and method of the present invention automatically configures a communication network device for communicating on a network and automatically handles the communication network registration and activation. In one embodiment a processor automatically configures a device for communicating on a communication network with automated registration and activation on the communication network. In one exemplary implementation, network configuration information includes a network unit device identifier (e.g., a MAN) and the present invention automatically registers and activates a device with a communication network when requested to activate by a user tapping on an activation application or being taken to the activation application.

Claims

1. A communications network automated registration and activation system comprising:

a processor for automatically configuring a device for communicating on a communication network with automated registration and activation on said communication network;

a network interface component for communicating information to and from other devices, said network interface component coupled to said processor;

a memory for storing information for said processor;

said memory is coupled to said processor; and

a data bus for communicating information between said processor and said memory, said data bus coupled to said processor.

2. The communications network automated registration and activation system of claim 1 wherein said network configuration information includes a network unit identifier.

3. The communications network automated registration and activation system of claim 2 wherein said processor forwards said communication network unit identifier to a communication network when a network communication application is opened.

4. The communications network automated registration and activation system of claim 1 wherein said processor automatically registers and activates said device on a communications network when requested to do so by a user.

5. The communications network automated registration and activation system of claim 1 wherein said processor automatically registers and activates said device on a communications network when booted up.

The communications network automated registration and activation system of claim 1 wherein said processor communicates said network configuration information with said network and receives network unit identification information from said network, said processor utilizes said network unit identification information to configure said device for communication on said communication network.

7. The communications network automated registration and activation system of claim 1 wherein said network interface component comprises:

a transmitter for generating radio signals for communicating information over a cellular communication network;

said transmitter coupled to said communication bus;

a receiver for accepting radio signals from said cellular communication network, said receiver coupled to said communication bus; and

an antenna for transmitting and receiving radio signals to and from said cellular communication network, said antenna coupled to said transmitter and said receiver

8. A personal digital assistant automated registration and activation system comprising:

a processor for automatically configuring a device for communicating on a communication network with automated registration and activation on said communication network;

a network interface component for communicating information to and from other devices, said network interface component coupled to said processor;

a memory for storing information for said processor;

said memory is coupled to said processor; and

a data bus for communicating information between said processor and said read only memory, said data bus coupled to said processor.

9. The personal digital assistant registration and activation system of claim 8 wherein said network configuration information includes a network unit identifier.

10. The personal digital assistant automated registration and activation system of claim 9 wherein said processor forwards said communication network unit identifier to a communication network when a network communication application is opened.

11. The personal digital assistant automated registration and activation system of claim 8 wherein said processor automatically registers and activates said device on a communications network when requested to do so by a user.

12. The personal digital assistant automated registration and activation system of claim 8 wherein said processor automatically registers and activates said device on a communications network when booted up.

13. The personal digital assistant automated registration and activation system of claim 8 wherein said processor communicates said network configuration information with said network and receives network unit identification information from said network, said processor utilizes said network unit identification information to configure said device for communication on said communication network.

14. The personal digital assistant automated registration and activation system of claim 8 wherein said network interface component comprises:

a transmitter for generating radio signals for communicating information over a cellular communication network;

said transmitter coupled to said communication bus;

a receiver for accepting radio signals from said cellular communication network, said receiver coupled to said communication bus; and

an antenna for transmitting and receiving radio signals to and from said cellular communication network, said antenna coupled to said transmitter and said receiver.

15. A communication network device configuration method comprising the steps of:

storing communication network configuration information in a memory;

using said communication network configuration information to automatically configure a communication device for communicating with a communication network; and

registering and activating said device automatically on a communication network.

16. The communication network device configuration method of claim 15 wherein said network configuration information includes information for automated registration and activation on a communication network.

17. The communication network device configuration method of claim 15 wherein said network configuration information includes a network unit device identifier.

18. The communication network device configuration method of claim 15 wherein said network configuration information is loaded by a manufacturer.

19. The communication network device configuration method of claim 15 wherein a processor utilizes the communication network configuration information to automatically configure the device for communication on a network.

20. The communication network device configuration method of claim 15 wherein the device is automatically registered and activated on a communication network.
