Abstract

A method and apparatus for enabling registration of an Aggregate End Point (AEP) device that is incapable of supporting a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) registration are disclosed. The method performs a static registration of the AEP device in a plurality of network elements associated with an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network by provisioning. The method then processes an originating call request or a terminating call request associated with the AEP device using the static registration.

Claims

1. A method for enabling registration of an Aggregate End Point (AEP) device that is incapable of supporting a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) registration, comprising:

performing a static registration of the AEP device in a plurality of network elements associated with an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network by provisioning; and

processing an originating call request or a terminating call request associated with the AEP device using the static registration.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of network elements comprises:

a Home Subscriber Server (HSS), a Proxy Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF), a Serving Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) or an application server (AS).

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said static registration is not timed out by the plurality of network elements.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said AEP device comprises at least one of:

an Internet Protocol Private Branch eXchanges (IP PBX), an enterprise Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateway, or an IP trunking interface, where endpoint devices associate with users behind the AEP are not known by the IMS network.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the performing comprises:

provisioning the HSS, the S-CSCF, the P-CSCF, and the AS to treat a Public User Identifier (PUID) associated with at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself as registered; and

provisioning a subscriber profile for the PUID comprising subscription related information including a plurality of route headers needed to access an endpoint device associated with the at least one user, at least one capability, and at least one priority, at the HSS and the S-CSCF.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the performing comprises:

provisioning a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) of the S-CSCF at the P-CSCF that will be used to perform call processing for the PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device; and

provisioning a SIP URI of the P-CSCF at the S-CSCF that will be used to perform call processing for the PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein the processing the originating call request comprises:

receiving the originating call request from the AEP device by the P-CSCF;

accepting the originating call request based on a registered Public User Identifier (PUID) associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself by the P-CSCF; and

forwarding the call request by the P-CSCF to the S-CSCF, wherein the S-CSCF has been provisioned during the static registration.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the processing the originating call request further comprises:

accepting the originating call request based on the registered PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself by the S-CSCF; and

forwarding the originating call request by the S-CSCF to the AS for processing.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the processing by the AS comprises:

accepting the originating call request based on the registered PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself by the AS; and

providing at least one service feature comprising;

a digit translation feature, a call screening feature, a time of day routing feature, an abbreviated dialing feature, a short dialing feature, a conferencing feature, or a messaging feature.

10. The method of claim 2, wherein the processing the terminating call request comprises:

receiving the terminating call request destined to the AEP device by the I-CSCF;

querying the HSS by the I-CSCF to identify the S-CSCF to which the call request needs to be forwarded to for call processing; and

forwarding the call request by the I-CSCF to the S-CSCF.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the processing the terminating call request further comprises:

accepting the terminating call request based on a registered Public User Identifier (PUID) associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself by the S-CSCF;

forwarding the terminating call request by the S-CSCF to the AS for processing; and

forwarding the terminating call request by the S-CSCF to the P-CSCF for call processing, wherein the P-CSCF has been provisioned at the S-CSCF during the static registration.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the processing by the AS comprises:

accepting the originating call request based on the registered PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself; and

providing at least one service feature comprising;

a digit translation feature, a call screening feature, a time of day routing feature, an abbreviated dialing feature, a short dialing feature, a conferencing feature, or a messaging feature.

A computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon a plurality of instructions, the plurality of instructions including instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform steps of a method for enabling registration of an Aggregate End Point (AEP) device that is incapable of supporting a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) registration, comprising:

performing a static registration of the AEP device in a plurality of network elements associated with an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network by provisioning; and

processing an originating call request or a terminating call request associated with the AEP device using the static registration.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the plurality of network elements comprises:

a Home Subscriber Server (HSS), a Proxy Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF), a Serving Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) or an application server (AS).

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein said static registration is not timed out by the plurality of network elements.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein said AEP device comprises at least one of:

an Internet Protocol Private Branch eXchanges (IP PBX), an enterprise Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateway, or an IP trunking interface, where endpoint devices associate with users behind the AEP are not known by the IMS network.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein the performing comprises:

provisioning the HSS, the S-CSCF, the P-CSCF, and the AS to treat a Public User Identifier (PUID) associated with at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself as registered; and

provisioning a subscriber profile for the PUID comprising subscription related information including a plurality of route headers needed to access an endpoint device associated with the at least one user, at least one capability, and at least one priority, at the HSS and the S-CSCF.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein the performing comprises:

provisioning a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) of the S-CSCF at the P-CSCF that will be used to perform call processing for the PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself; and

provisioning a SIP URI of the P-CSCF at the S-CSCF that will be used to perform call processing for the PUID associated with the at least one user of the AEP device.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14, wherein the processing the originating call request comprises:

receiving the originating call request from the AEP device by the P-CSCF;

accepting the originating call request based on a registered Public User Identifier (PUID) associated with the at least one user of the AEP device or the AEP device itself by the P-CSCF; and

forwarding the call request by the P-CSCF to the S-CSCF, wherein the S-CSCF has been provisioned during the static registration.

20. A system for enabling registration of an Aggregate End Point (AEP) device that is incapable of supporting a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) registration, comprising:

means for performing a static registration of the AEP device in a plurality of network elements associated with an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network by provisioning; and

means for processing an originating call request or a terminating call request associated with the AEP device using the static registration.
