Abstract

A method of passing a pipe from a first vessel to a second vessel using an arm assembly affixed to the second vessel is provided herein. The method includes moving the second vessel within proximity of the first vessel and anchoring, or pinning, the second vessel. The arm assembly of the second vessel is moved toward the pipe, until the pipe is secured, or disposed, therein. The first vessel then releases the pipe.

Claims

1. ) A method of passing a pipe from a first vessel to a second vessel, wherein the second vessel comprises an arm assembly which comprises:

an arm platform at one end of the second vessel affixed to a lower end of a transom of the second vessel;

a folding bar affixed to an upper end of the transom of the second vessel and a second area of the arm platform;

a pair of arm transverse beams removeably affixed to a distal end of the arm platform, across a first axis;

a pair of skidding beams removeably and skiddably affixed to the arm transverse beams; and

a clamp affixed to a distal end of the skidding beams, wherein the clamp has a gate, the method comprising;

moving the second vessel within at least about 10 meters from the first vessel;

pinning jack-up legs of the second vessel;

aligning the skidding beams of the arm assembly with the pipe;

moving the skidding beams until the gate of the clamp of the skidding beams has passed the pipe and the pipe is disposed within the clamp;

closing the gate to encompass the pipe;

releasing the pipe from the first vessel; and

jacking-up the legs of the second vessel.

2. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the skidding beams are skiddable over the transverse beams along two axes.

3. ) The method of claim 2, wherein the skidding beams are skiddable at least about 6 meters along the first axis and at least about 4 meters along the second axis.

4. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the gate may be rotated to encompass a pipe disposed within the clamp.

5. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the arm transverse beams are removed from the arm platform, the skidding beams are removed from the arm transverse beams, the folding arms are folded, and the arm platform is raise against the transom of the first vessel.

6. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the first vessel is a drilling rig and the second vessel is an elevating support vessel.

7. ) The method of claim 6, wherein the elevating support vessel comprises:

a hull having a hull periphery, wherein the hull periphery has a bow, a center section, a transom, a bow sloped section between the bow and the center section, and a transom sloped section between the transom and the center section, and the transom is wider, along the vertical axis, than the bow, and the bow and transom are at least half as deep as the center section;

a powered jacking mechanism connected to each of the jack-up legs for elevating and lowering each jack up leg relative to the hull between elevated and lowered positions;

at least two rear azimuthing thrusters affixed to a lower side of the transom; and

at least one front azimuthing thruster affixed to a lower side of the bow.

8. ) The method of claim 7, wherein the elevating support vessel further comprises:

a crane support further comprising,

at least two vertical members with each vertical member having a first and second end, the first end of the first vertical member is affixed to a first track, the first end of the second vertical member is affixed to a second track, the first and second tracks are affixed to a deck of the elevating support vessel, the second end of the first vertical member is affixed to a first side of a platform, the second end of the second vertical member is affixed to a second side of the platform; and

a column having a proximate and distal end, the proximate end is affixed to the platform, and the crane is rotatably affixed to the distal end of the column, the platform has a lower side disposed at least about 2 meters above the deck, the crane support apparatus is movable along the first and second tracks.

9. ) The method of claim 1, further comprising tugging the first vessel away from the pipe after it has been released.

10. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the second vessel has at least three azimuthing thrusters.

11. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the pipe is a single well conductor pipe.

12. ) The method of claim 1, wherein the single well conductor pipe is drill cased and cemented.

13. ) The method of claim 1, further comprising:

holding the second vessel in station while the jack-up legs of the second vessel are being pinned.

14. ) The method of claim 13, wherein the step of holding the second vessel in station further comprises:

using attitude measuring devices to determine an initial position of the second vessel, wherein the attitude measuring devices are in communication with a computer;

using attitude measuring devices to determine subsequent positions of the second vessel;

using the computer to measure the subsequent positions of the second vessel relative to the initial position;

using the computer to determine an amount of force and a vector direction that must be exerted on the second vessel to move the second vessel back to the initial position; and

transmitting an electrical signal to the at least three azimuthing thrusters to move the second vessel in the determined force and vector direction, wherein the second vessel remains within at least a 5 meter radius from the initial position.

15. ) The method of claim 13, wherein the second vessel remains within at least a 3 meter radius from the initial position.

16. ) The method of claim 13, wherein the step of holding the second vessel in station further comprises:

using attitude measuring devices to determine an initial position of the second vessel, wherein the attitude measuring devices are in communication with a computer;

using attitude measuring devices to determine subsequent positions of the second vessel;

using the computer to measure the subsequent positions of the second vessel relative to the initial position;

using the computer to determine an amount of force and a vector direction that must be exerted on the second vessel to move the second vessel back to the initial position; and

transmitting an electrical signal to at least three azimuthing thrusters to move the second vessel in the determined force and vector direction.

17. ) The method of claim 16 further comprising:

using a crane disposed on a crane support apparatus to lower a first cable from the second vessel to the ocean floor, wherein a first end of the first cable is affixed to a first end of the second vessel'"'"'s transom and a second end of the first cable is affixed to a first anchor.

18. ) The method of claim 17, wherein the crane support apparatus comprises:

at least two vertical members with each vertical member having a first and second end, the first end of the first vertical member is affixed to a first track, the first end of the second vertical member is affixed to a second track, the first and second tracks are affixed to a deck of the second vessel, the second end of the first vertical member is affixed to a first side of a crane support platform, the second end of the second vertical member is affixed to a second side of the crane support platform; and

a column having a proximate and distal end, the proximate end is affixed to the crane support platform, and the crane is rotatably affixed to the distal end of the column, the crane support platform has a lower side disposed at least about 2 meters above the deck, the crane support apparatus is movable along the first and second tracks.

19. ) The method of claim 18 further comprising:

using the crane to lower a second cable from the second vessel to the ocean floor.

20. ) The method of claim 19, wherein a first end of the second cable is affixed to a second end of the second vessel'"'"'s transom and a second end of the second cable is affixed to a second anchor, wherein the second vessel remains within at least a 5 meter radius from the initial position.
