Abstract

One or more disposable devices suitable for use in a surgical field of an operating room are disclosed. One device comprises a sensor (101) communicatively coupled to the wand (102) to register points of interest on a first or second bone of the muscular-skeletal system and transmits location data related to the points of interest to the sensor (101) to assess orthopedic alignment with the points of interest. A display (150) having a GUI (152) are coupled to the devices for providing device and surgical information in real-time. A communication device (104) includes display (150) and a digital signal processor (154). A transducer (142) receives vocal commands (140) for generating an action (146) that produces an operative change in the devices or display (150). The DSP (154) includes voice recognition software (144) for identifying words or phrases to produce an action (146) that are received by the transducer (142).

Claims

1. A system in an operating room comprising

one or more devices within a surgical field of the operating room;

a display;

a transducer for receiving audio signals;

a digital signal processor operatively coupled to the one or more devices, display and the transducer where a vocal command produces an operative change in the one or more devices or the display in the operating room.

2. The system of claim 1 further including voice recognition software coupled to the digital signal processor for assessing the audio signals received by the transducer.

3. The system of claim 2 where the voice recognition software identifies one or more words corresponding to an action and where a visual or auditory queue is provided in response to the identified words.

4. The system of claim 3 where a response is provided to the visual or auditory queue to initiate the action or terminate the action.

5. The system of claim 1 where one device of the one or more devices is an active device having at least one sensor for measuring a parameter.

6. The system of claim 5 where the device having the at least one sensor is disposable.

7. The system of claim 6 where the device measures a parameter of the muscular-skeletal system.

8. The system of claim 7 where the one or more devices aligns two or more bones of the muscular-skeletal system.

9. The system of claim 8 where one or more devices measures a force, pressure, or load.

10. The system of claim 9 where alignment and force, pressure, or load data are displayed on the display.

11. A method of improving operating room efficiency comprising the steps of:

displaying information related to a surgical procedure on a display in the operating room;

voicing a command to initiate an action;

identifying the command using voice recognition software;

providing a query to the identified command; and

responding to the query thereby initiating or terminating the action.

12. The method of claim 11 further including the steps of:

coupling one or more sensors to a patient for measuring a parameter; and

displaying quantitative measurements in real-time on the display.

13. The method of claim 12 further including a step of sequencing through steps of the surgerical procedure wherein at least one voice command is initiated to generate an action related to the display or sensors.

14. The method of claim 13 further including the steps of

making adjustments during the surgical procedure that change the readings measured by the one or more sensors;

and

recording the measurements.

15. The method of claim 12 further including a step of disposing of the one or more sensors after the surgical procedure.

16. An intra-operative system for an operating room comprising:

an ultrasonic alignment system coupled to a patient within a surgical field;

a prosthetic component having at least one sensor for measuring a parameter; and

a display showing patient alignment and the measured parameter where the display is coupled to the ultrasonic alignment system and the prosthetic component for receiving data in real-time.

17. The system of claim 16 further including:

a transducer for receiving audio signals;

a digital signal processor operatively coupled to the ultrasonic alignment system, the at least one sensor, the transducer, and the display where a vocal command produces an operative change to the ultrasonic alignment system, the at least one sensor, the transducer, or the display.

18. The system of claim 17 further including voice recognition software coupled to the digital signal processor for assessing the audio signals received by the transducer.

19. The system of claim 16 where the prosthetic component is an insert for measuring a force, pressure, or load applied by the muscular-skeletal system.

20. The system of claim 19 where some of the ultrasonic alignment system and the prosthetic component are disposed of after the surgical procedure.
