Abstract

An implantable stimulation system comprises an implantable stimulator and a control device. The control device is configured to transmit acoustic waves to the implantable stimulator, and the implantable stimulator is configured to transform the acoustic waves into electrical current, and generate stimulation energy based on the electrical current. For example, the electrical current can be transformed into electrical energy that can be used to generate the stimulation energy. Or the electrical current can contain signals used to directly or indirectly control the generation of the stimulation energy.

Claims

1. A stimulation system, comprising:

a control device configured for transmitting acoustic waves through body tissue; and

an implantable stimulator including one or more acoustic transducers configured for transforming the acoustic waves into electrical current, a stimulator electrode configured for electrically stimulating adjacent body tissue, a sensor configured for sensing one or more parameters within the body, and a control unit operable to control the delivery of electrical stimulation energy to the stimulator electrode based at least in part on one or more stimulation parameters and the one or more parameters sensed by the sensor.

2. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the one or more stimulation parameters are transmitted to the implantable stimulator.

3. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the one or more stimulation parameters are acoustically transmitted to the implantable stimulator from the control device.

4. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the one or more stimulation parameters are pre-programmed within a memory of the implantable stimulator.

5. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the control device is operable between an energizing mode and an activation mode.

6. The stimulation system of claim 5, wherein, in the energizing mode, the control device is configured to transmit acoustic energizing waves for generating electrical energy within the implantable stimulator.

7. The stimulation system of claim 5, wherein, in the energizing mode, the control device is configured to determine a frequency for communicating with the implantable stimulator.

8. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the control device is configured to:

transmit a diagnostic signal to the implantable stimulator;

receive an acoustic feedback signal from the implantable stimulator in response to the diagnostic signal; and

determine an optimal frequency for communicating with the implantable stimulator based upon the acoustic feedback signal.

9. The stimulation system of claim 8, wherein the diagnostic signal comprises a broadband acoustic wave or scanning wave.

10. The stimulation system of claim 8, wherein the acoustic feedback signal from the implantable stimulator comprises a plurality of acoustic waves at different frequencies.

11. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is configured for sensing at least one of temperature, electrical impedance, pressure, position, strain, pH, and fluid flow.

12. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the implantable stimulator further includes a reference electrode.

13. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the one or more acoustic transducers comprises an array of acoustic transducers.

14. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the implantable stimulator further includes an energy storage device configured for storing the electrical current.

15. The stimulation system of claim 14, further comprising a switch configured to selectively output the electrical energy from the energy storage device to alternatively activate or deactivate the implantable stimulator.

16. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the control device is an implantable device.

17. The stimulation system of claim 1, wherein the control device is an extracorporeal device.

18. The stimulation system of claim 1, further comprising an external energizing device configured for charging the implantable stimulator using RF or acoustic energy.

19. A stimulation system, comprising:

a control device configured for transmitting acoustic waves through body tissue; and

an implantable stimulator including one or more acoustic transducers configured for transforming the acoustic waves into electrical current, a stimulator electrode configured for electrically stimulating adjacent body tissue, a blood pressure sensor configured for sensing blood pressure within the body, and a control unit operable to control the delivery of electrical stimulation energy to the stimulator electrode based at least in part on one or more stimulation parameters and the blood pressure sensed by the blood pressure sensor.

20. An implantable nerve stimulator, comprising:

one or more acoustic transducers configured for transforming an acoustic signal into an electrical signal;

a plurality of stimulator electrodes each configured for electrically stimulating nerve tissue within the body;

a sensor configured for sensing one or more parameters within the body; and

a control unit operable to control the delivery of electrical stimulation energy to the stimulator electrodes based on one or more stimulation parameters and the one or more parameters sensed by the sensor.
