Abstract

A framework (referred to herein as Application Integration Architecture, or AIA) that formalizes and orchestrates activities in an SOA development lifecycle. In one set of embodiments, AIA can capture development-related information in a shared data store and cause the information to flow in an automated or semi-automated manner from one lifecycle phase to the next as the lifecycle progresses. This information flow can, in turn, facilitate automations at each lifecycle phase for the responsible stakeholders (e.g., solution architects, developers, installation developers, etc.), thereby enforcing SOA best practices, enhancing development productivity, and ensuring the quality of the final SOA deliverables.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

retrieving, by a computer system, a functional representation of a software service from a shared data store, the software service being part of an Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) application; and

generating, by the computer system, one or more artifacts for the software service based on the functional representation.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the functional representation includes a service type for the software service, and wherein generating one or more artifacts for the software service comprises selecting a predefined template for the software service based on the service type.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein generating one or more artifacts for the software service further comprises:

generating, based on the predefined template, one or more user interfaces for a developer of the software service, the one or more user interfaces being configured to request implementation information pertaining to the software service;

receiving the implementation information from the user; and

generating the one or more artifacts based on the functional representation and the implementation information.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the one or more user interfaces correspond to a wizard user interface.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein at least one user interface in the one or more user interfaces enables the developer to modify a portion of the functional representation.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the modified functional representation is stored in the shared data store.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein the implementation information includes deployment information.

8. The method of claim 3 wherein, subsequently to generating the one or more artifacts, the one or more artifacts are further modified by the developer to fully implement the software service.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein, once implementation of the software service is complete, metadata pertaining to the software service is associated with the functional representation and stored in the shared data store.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more artifacts include a Web Services Description Language (WSDL) file and a Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) file.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the retrieving and the generating are performed by a plug-in software module for an integrated development environment.

12. A computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon program code executable by a computer system, the program code comprising:

code that causes the computer system to retrieve a functional representation of a software service from a shared data store, the software service being part of an Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) application; and

code that causes the computer system to generate one or more artifacts for the software service based on the functional representation.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the functional representation includes a service type for the software service, and wherein generating one or more artifacts for the software service comprises selecting a predefined template for the software service based on the service type.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the code that causes the computer system to generate one or more artifacts for the software service further comprises:

code that causes the computer system to generate, based on the predefined template, one or more user interfaces for a developer of the software service, the one or more user interfaces being configured to request implementation information pertaining to the software service;

code that causes the computer system to receive the implementation information from the user; and

code that causes the computer system to generate the one or more artifacts based on the functional representation and the implementation information.

15. A system comprising:

a processing component configured to;

retrieve a functional representation of a software service from a shared data store, the software service being part of an Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) application; and

generate one or more artifacts for the software service based on the functional representation.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the functional representation includes a service type for the software service, and wherein generating one or more artifacts for the software service comprises selecting a predefined template for the software service based on the service type.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the processing component is further configured to:

generate, based on the predefined template, one or more user interfaces for a developer of the software service, the one or more user interfaces being configured to request implementation information pertaining to the software service;

receive the implementation information from the user; and

generate the one or more artifacts based on the functional representation and the implementation information.
