Abstract

In one embodiment, an LED lamp has a generally bulb shape. The LEDs are low power types and are encapsulated in thin, narrow, flexible strips. The LEDs are connected in series in the strips to drop a desired voltage. The strips are affixed to the outer surface of a bulb form to provide structure to the lamp. The strips are connected in parallel to a power supply, which may be housed in the lamp. Since many low power LEDs are used and are spread out over a large surface area, there is no need for a large metal heat sink. Further, the light emission is similar to that of an incandescent bulb. In other embodiment, there is no bulb form and the strips are bendable to have a variety of shapes. In another embodiment, a light sheet is bent to provide 360 degrees of light emission. Many other embodiments are described.

Claims

1. A solid state lamp comprising:

a plurality of flexible strips encapsulating light emitting diode (LED) dies, the LED dies being connected in series in the flexible strips,

wherein the flexible strips are connected at one or more first terminals to a first voltage and connected at one or more second terminals to a second voltage;

a support structure for supporting the flexible strips; and

an electrical connector affixed to the support structure for connection to an external power source for providing drive current to the strips.

2. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips are affixed to an outer surface of the support structure, defining a spacing and form of the strips.

3. The lamp of claim 2 wherein the support structure generally resembles a rounded shape.

4. The lamp of claim 2 wherein the support structure generally resembles a cylinder.

5. The lamp of claim 2 wherein the support structure has flat sides.

6. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the support structure is three-dimensional so that the strips emit light 360 degrees around the lamp.

7. The lamp of claim 1 further comprising a power converter inside the lamp, the converter generating the first voltage and the second voltage applied to the strips.

8. The lamp of claim 7 wherein the second voltage is generated by a current source connected to all the strips such that the strips are connected in parallel.

9. The lamp of claim 7 wherein the second voltage is generated by a plurality of current sources, each current source being connected to an associated strip to control a current through the associated strip by varying the second voltage for the associated strip.

10. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips extend from the support structure proximate to one end and are self-supporting at their other end.

11. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips have a first side and an opposing second side, wherein light is emitted from both the first side and the second side.

12. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips are substantially parallel to each other at least along a portion of the lamp.

13. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips are at non-parallel angles with respect to each other.

14. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the support structure is transparent or translucent for passing light generated by the strips.

15. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips extend around a rounded support structure, wherein the support structure has air openings for cooling.

16. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the strips are bent in a circular shape.

17. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the support structure comprises a substantially flat surface on which the strips are affixed for generating a light beam less than or equal to 180 degrees.

18. The lamp of claim 1 wherein the electrical connector comprises a connector for an Edison type socket.

19. The lamp of claim 1 wherein each strip comprises:

a first substrate having first conductors;

a second substrate having second conductors; and

bare, unpackaged LED dies sandwiched between the first substrate and second substrate, wherein the first conductors and the second conductors connect dies on each strip in series.

20. The lamp of claim 1 further comprising a wavelength conversion material over the LED dies for generating white light.
