Abstract
A composition for the induction of bone growth is disclosed. The composition includes a substrate, bone growth protein, and sources of calcium and phosphate. The composition is acidic which promotes high activity of the bone growth protein. The calcium and phosphate sources can be provided as an acidic calcium phosphate salt. Also disclosed are methods of the making the composition and methods of using it.

51. A bone graft composition comprising:

a dehydrothermally cross-linked substrate including bovine Type I dermal collagen and about 60 wt. % to about 70 wt. % calcium hydrogen phosphate; and a fluid selected from the group consisting of bone marrow aspirate, whole blood or combinations thereof, wherein the substrate maintains an acidic buffering potential when combined with the fluid, enhances soluble calcium and phosphate concentrations at least about 200 times as compared to equimolar concentrations of hydroxyapatite and enhances soluble osteoinductive protein concentrations at least about 5 times as compared to equimolar concentrations of hydroxyapatite. - View Dependent Claims (52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67)
