Abstract

Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, for measurement in data forwarding storage. A method includes, in a network of interconnected computer system nodes, receiving a request from a source system to store data, directing the data to a computer memory, storing information about the data in a store associated with a central server, and continuously forwarding the data and the store from one computer memory to another computer memory in the network of interconnected computer system nodes without storing on any physical storage device in the network.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

in a network of interconnected computer system nodes, receiving a request from a source system to store data;

directing the data to a computer memory;

storing information about the data in a store associated with a central server;

continuously forwarding the data and the store from one computer memory to another computer memory in the network of interconnected computer system nodes without storing on any physical storage device in the network, the continuously forwarding comprising;

determining an address of a node available to receive the data and the store based on one or more factors;

sending a message to the source system with the address of a specific node for the requester to forward the data or store;

detecting a presence of the data or the store in memory of the specific node; and

forwarding the data or store to another computer memory of a node in the network of interconnected computer system nodes without storing any physical storage device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein continuously forwarding further comprises applying a time stamp to the data in the computer memory of the specific node.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the one or more factors comprise network traffic analysis and available memory.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the information about the data includes a type, size and ownership.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving the request from the source system to retrieve data being continuously forwarded in the network of interconnected computer system nodes;

retrieving the data from node memory in response to the request to retrieve data; and

deleting information about the retrieved data in the store associated with the central server.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein retrieving comprises:

matching the data request at a central server using a hash mark representing the data entering a node memory;

sending a message to a node that is predicted to have the data in memory, the message instructing the node to forward the data in memory to the requester; and

sending a confirmation message to the central server that the data has been forwarded to the requester.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising receiving an acknowledgment from the requested that the requested data has been received.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a request for data information in the store;

parsing the request to determine what is being requested;

retrieving the store from node memory in response to the request;

generating a report from information in the store matching the parsed request; and

forwarding the report to the requester.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the report comprises a number of files being forwarded, a number of file types being forwarded, a number representing a physical size of data being forwarded, user-specific information or group-specific information.

10. A computer program product, tangibly embodied in computer readable medium, for storing and retrieving data in computer memories of a network of interconnected computer system nodes, the computer program product causing data processing apparatus to:

receive a request from a source system to store data;

direct the data to a computer memory;

store information about the data in a store associated with a central server;

continuously forward the data and the store from one computer memory to another computer memory in the network of interconnected computer system nodes without storing on any physical storage device in the network, the continuously forwarding comprising;

determining an address of a node available to receive the data and the store based on one or more factors;

sending a message to the source system with the address of a specific node for the requester to forward the data or store;

detecting a presence of the data or the store in memory of the specific node; and

forwarding the data or store to another computer memory of a node in the network of interconnected computer system nodes without storing any physical storage device.

11. The computer program product of claim 10 wherein continuously forwarding further comprises applying a time stamp to the data in the computer memory of the specific node.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the one or more factors comprise network traffic analysis and available memory.

13. The computer program product of claim 10 wherein the information about the data includes a type, size and ownership.

14. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising:

receiving the request from the source system to retrieve data being continuously forwarded in the network of interconnected computer system nodes;

retrieving the data from node memory in response to the request to retrieve data; and

deleting information about the retrieved data in the store associated with the central server.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 wherein retrieving comprises:

matching the data request at a central server using a hash mark representing the data entering a node memory;

sending a message to a node that is predicted to have the data in memory, the message instructing the node to forward the data in memory to the requester; and

sending a confirmation message to the central server that the data has been forwarded to the requester.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 further comprising receiving an acknowledgment from the requested that the requested data has been received.

17. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising:

receiving a request for data information in the store;

parsing the request to determine what is being requested;

retrieving the store from node memory in response to the request;

generating a report from information in the store matching the parsed request; and

forwarding the report to the requester.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 wherein the report comprises a number of files being forwarded, a number of file types being forwarded, a number representing a physical size of data being forwarded, user-specific information or group-specific information.
