Abstract

Described is a device comprising a dosimeter reader including an RFID tag reader for retrieving and/or updating all or a portion of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of an RFID tag on a dosimeter sled that is part of a radiation dosimeter. Also described is a method retrieving and/or updating the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag.

Claims

1. A device comprising:

an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) reader for reading one or more OSL sensors of a dosimeter; and

an RFID tag reader for reading an RFID tag that is part of a dosimeter,

wherein the RFID tag includes data stored in non-volatile memory that is part of the RFID tag, and

wherein the one or more OSL sensors and the RFID tag are each part of a dosimeter sled that may be separated from the dosimeter, thereby allowing the one or more OSL sensors to be read by the OSL reader and the RFID tag to be read by the RFID tag reader when the dosimeter sled is separated from the dosimeter.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader includes an antenna that allows the RFID reader to communicate with the RFID tag without the dosimeter sled being removed from the dosimeter.

3. A method comprising the following steps:

(a) providing a dosimeter sled comprising;

one or more optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensors, and an RFID tag includes data stored in non-volatile memory that is part of the RFID tag;

(b) electronically communicating with the RFID tag to retrieve at least a portion of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag; and

(c) displaying the portion of data retrieved in step (b) to an individual,

wherein the dosimeter sled is a part of a dosimeter, and

wherein the dosimeter sled is separable from the dosimeter.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein step (b) is conducted when the dosimeter sled is separated from the dosimeter.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein step (b) is conducted when the dosimeter sled is mounted in the dosimeter.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein step (b) comprises retrieving all of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the portion of data retrieved in step (b) comprises identification information for a model type of the dosimeter and/or a dosimeter serial number for the dosimeter and/or an identification number for the individual to whom the dosimeter is assigned.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the portion of data retrieved in step (b) comprises calibration data for each of the one or more OSL sensors.

9. The method of claim 3, wherein the portion of data retrieved in step (b) comprises data and time information for estimating a build up of background radiation in the dosimeter.

The method of claim 3, wherein the portion of data retrieved in step (b) comprises a total dose of radiation to which the dosimeter has been exposed and/or a total dose of x-rays and gamma rays to which the dosimeter has been exposed and/or a total dose of neutrons to which the dosimeter has been exposed.

11. The method of claim 3, wherein the portion of data retrieved in step (b) comprises data and time information regarding the assignment of the dosimeter to an individual.

12. The method of claim 3, wherein the portion of data retrieved in step (b) comprises reader quality control data depicting the operability of a dosimeter reader that is used or has been used to read the one or more OSL sensors.

13. A method comprising the following steps:

(a) providing a dosimeter sled comprising;

one or more optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensors, and an RFID tag includes data stored in non-volatile memory that is part of the RFID tag;

(b) electronically communicating with the RFID tag to retrieve at least a portion of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag; and

(c) determining a historical dosage of radiation to which the dosimeter has been historically exposed based on portion of data retrieved in step (b),

wherein the dosimeter sled is a part of a dosimeter, and

wherein the dosimeter sled is separable from the dosimeter.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein step (b) is conducted when the dosimeter sled is separated from the dosimeter.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein step (b) is conducted when the dosimeter sled is mounted in the dosimeter.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein step (b) comprises retrieving all of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag

17. The method of claim 13, further comprising the following step

(d) determining a total dosage of radiation to which the dosimeter has been exposed based on the historical dosage of radiation determined in step (c) and a measured dosage of radiation obtained by reading a selected one or more OSL sensors of the one or more OSL sensors of the dosimeter sled.

18. A method comprising the following steps:

(a) providing a dosimeter sled comprising;

one or more optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensors, and an RFID tag includes data stored in non-volatile memory that is part of the RFID tag; and

(b) electronically communicating with the RFID tag to update at least a portion of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag,

wherein the dosimeter sled is a part of a dosimeter, and

wherein the dosimeter sled is separable from the dosimeter.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein step (b) is conducted when the dosimeter sled is separated from the dosimeter.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein step (b) is conducted when the dosimeter sled is mounted in the dosimeter.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein step (b) comprises updating all of the data stored in the non-volatile memory of the RFID tag

22. The method of claim 18, wherein the portion of data updated in step (b) comprises one or more of the group selected from the following types of identification information:

identification information for the model of the dosimeter, a dosimeter serial number and an identification number for the individual to whom the dosimeter is assigned.

23. The method of claim 18, wherein the portion of data updated in step (b) comprises calibration data for each of the one or more OSL sensors.

24. The method of claim 18, wherein the portion of data updated in step (b) comprises data and time information for estimating a build up of background radiation in the dosimeter.

25. The method of claim 18, wherein the portion of data updated in step (b) comprises a total dose of radiation to which the dosimeter has been exposed and/or a total dose of x-rays and gamma rays to which the dosimeter has been exposed and/or a total dose of neutrons to which the dosimeter has been exposed.

26. The method of claim 18, wherein the portion of data updated in step (b) comprises data and time information regarding the assignment of the dosimeter to an individual.

27. The method of claim 18, wherein the portion of data updated in step (b) comprises reader quality control data depicting the operability of a dosimeter reader that is used or has been used to read the one or more OSL sensors.
