Abstract

There is provided a sorbent for removing metabolic waste products from a dialysis liquid, the sorbent comprising a layer of immobilized uremic toxin-treating enzyme particles intermixed with cation exchange particles.

21. A sorbent for removing metabolic waste products from a dialysis liquid, the sorbent comprising a primary layer of immobilized uremic toxin-treating enzyme particles intermixed with cation exchange particles,

wherein the primary layer is arranged within the sorbent such that when in use, the pressure drop of the dialysate across the primary layer is dependent on the size of said cation exchange particles.

22. The sorbent as claimed in claim 21 further comprising a secondary layer of cation exchange particles.

23. The sorbent as claimed in claim 22, further comprising a tertiary layer of anion exchange particles intermixed with organic compounds absorber particles.

24. The sorbent as claimed in claim 23, wherein said secondary layer is disposed between said primary and said tertiary layer.

25. The sorbent as claimed in claim 21, wherein said uremic toxin-treating enzyme particles convert urea to ammonium carbonate.

26. The sorbent as claimed in claim 25, wherein said uremic toxin-treating enzyme is urease.

27. The sorbent as claimed in claim 21, wherein said cation exchange particles are zirconium phosphate particles.

28. The sorbent as claimed in claim 23, wherein said anion exchange particles are zirconium oxide particles.

29. The sorbent as claimed in claim 23, wherein said organic compounds absorber particles are activated carbon particles.

30. The sorbent as claimed in claim 26, wherein said urease is immobilized on at least one of cellulose, nylon, polycaprolactone and chitosan.

31. The sorbent as claimed in claim 28, wherein said zirconium oxide is hydrous zirconium oxide.

32. The sorbent as claimed in claim 26, wherein said urease particles have an average particle size in in the range of from 10 microns to 1000 microns.

33. The sorbent as claimed in claim 27, wherein said zirconium phosphate particles have an average particle size in the range of from 10 microns to 1000 microns.

34. The sorbent as claimed in claim 28, wherein said zirconium oxide particles have particle size in the range of from 10 microns to 1000 microns.

35. The sorbent as claimed in claim 29, wherein said activated carbon particles have an average particle size in the range of from 10 microns to 1000 microns.

39. The sorbent as claimed in claim 21, wherein said cation exchange particles are ammonia absorbers.

40. The sorbent as claimed in claim 21, wherein said cation exchange particles comprises ions of a metal whose phosphate is poorly soluble in water.

36. A sorbent for removing metabolic waste products from a dialysis liquid, the sorbent comprising a layer of cation exchange particles having an average particle size in the range of 50 microns to 200 microns.

37. A sorbent for removing metabolic waste products from a dialysis liquid, the sorbent comprising:

a primary layer of immobilized uremic toxin-treating enzyme particles intermixed with cation exchange particles; and

a secondary layer of cation exchange particles.

38. The sorbent as claimed in claim 37, wherein the cation exchange particles have an average particle size in the range of 10 microns to 1000 microns.
