Abstract

A persistent phosphor of formula I is provided, along with methods for making and using the phosphor:

A_xAl_yO₄:Eu_j,RE_k,B_m,Zn_n,Co_o,Sc_p   I

wherein:

• • A is Ba, Sr, Ca, or a combination of these metals;
  • x is greater than about 0.75 and less than about 1.3;
  • y is greater than or equal to about 1.6 and less than or equal to 2;
  • j is greater than about 0.0005 and less than about 0.1;
  • k is greater than about 0.0005 and less than about 0.1;
  • m is greater than or equal to 0 and less than about 0.30;
  • n is greater than 0 and less than about 0.10;
  • o is greater than 0 and less than about 0.01;
  • p is greater than 0 and less than about 0.05; and
  • RE is Dy, Nd, or a combination thereof.

Applications for such phosphors include use in toys, emergency equipment, clothing, and instrument panels, among others.

Claims

1. A phosphor of formula I

A_xAl_yO₄:

Eu_j,RE_k,B_m,Zn_n,Co_o,Sc_p

wherein;

A is Ba, Sr, Ca, or a combination of these metals;

x is greater than about 0.75 and less than about 1.3;

y is greater than or equal to about 1.6 and less than or equal to 2;

j is greater than about 0.0005 and less than about 0.1;

k is greater than about 0.0005 and less than about 0.1;

m is greater than or equal to 0 and less than about 0.30;

n is greater than 0 and less than about 0.10;

o is greater than 0 and less than about 0.01;

p is greater than 0 and less than about 0.05; and

RE is Dy, Nd, or a combination thereof.

2. A phosphor according to claim 1, of formula:

Ca_0.917Al₂O₄Eu_0.005Nd_0.03Zn_0.005Co_0.0005Sc_0.01.

3. A phosphor according to claim 1, of formula:

Sr_0.9545Al_1.89O₄Eu_0.01Dy_0.03B_0.1Zn_0.005Co_0.0005Sc_0.01.

4. A phosphor according to claim 1, wherein m is 0.

5. A phosphor according to claim 1, wherein x is greater than about 0.9 and less than about 1.10.

6. A phosphor according to claim 1, wherein A is Ca.

7. A phosphor according to claim 1, wherein A is Sr.

8. A phosphor according to claim 1, wherein RE is Dy.

9. A phosphor according to claim 1, wherein RE is Nd.

10. An article of manufacture comprising a phosphor of formula I

A_xAl_yO₄:

Eu_j,RE_k,B_m,Zn_n,Co_o,Sc_p

wherein;

A is Ba, Sr, Ca, or a combination of these metals;

x is greater than about 0.75 and less than about 1.3;

y is greater than or equal to about 1.6 and less than or equal to 2;

j is greater than about 0.0005 and less than about 0.1;

k is greater than about 0.0005 and less than about 0.1;

m is greater than or equal to 0 and less than about 0.30;

n is greater than 0 and less than about 0.10;

o is greater than 0 and less than about 0.01;

p is greater than 0 and less than about 0.05; and

RE is Dy, Nd, or a combination thereof.

11. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein the phosphor is Ca_0.917Al₂O₄Eu_0.005Nd_0.03Zn_0.005Co_0.0005Sc_0.01.

12. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein the phosphor is:

Sr_0.9545Al_1.89O₄Eu_0.01Dy_0.03B_0.1Zn_0.005Co_0.0005Sc_0.01.

13. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein m is 0.

14. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein x is greater than about 0.9 and less than about 1.10.

15. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein A is Ca.

16. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein A is Sr.

17. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein RE is Dy.

18. An article of manufacture according to claim 10, wherein RE is Nd.
