Abstract

A replaceable printer component includes a memory and a communication link The memory stores a tag encryption mask and data. The data is stored in a plurality of portions of the memory where each portion is defined by a tag. The tag encryption mask indicates an encryption status of each portion of the memory defined by a tag. The communication link is configured to communicatively link the memory to a printer controller when the replaceable printer component is installed in a printing system.

Claims

1. A replaceable printer component comprising:

a memory configured to store a tag encryption mask and data, the data stored in a plurality of portions of the memory where each portion is defined by a tag, the tag encryption mask indicating an encryption status of each portion of the memory defined by a tag; and

a communication link configured to communicatively link the memory to a printer controller when the replaceable printer component is installed in a printing system.

2. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein the memory is configured to include up to 16 tags to define 16 portions of the memory, and

wherein the tag encryption mask comprises 16-bits, each bit indicating the encryption status of one of the 16 portions of the memory.

3. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein the tag encryption mask is stored within a header area of the memory.

4. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein the memory is configured to store encrypted data and unencrypted data.

5. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein the replaceable printer component comprises one of an inkjet cartridge, an inkjet printhead assembly, a toner cartridge, and an ink supply.

6. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein the replaceable printer component comprises a peripheral device of the printing system.

7. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein the memory comprises a non-volatile memory.

8. The replaceable printer component of claim 1, wherein each tag defines a type and a length of the data stored in a portion.

9. A replaceable printer component comprising:

means for storing data in a plurality of blocks;

means for indicating an encryption status for each block of data; and

means for communicatively linking the means for storing to a printer controller when the replaceable printer component is installed in a printing system.

10. The replaceable printer component of claim 9, wherein the means for storing stores up to 16 blocks of data, and

wherein the means for indicating the encryption status for each block of data comprises 16-bits, each bit indicating the encryption status of one of the 16 blocks of data.

11. The replaceable printer component of claim 9, wherein the means for indicating the encryption status for each block of data is included within a header area of the means for storing.

12. The replaceable printer component of claim 9, wherein the means for storing comprises means for defining a type and a length of each block of data.

13. The replaceable printer component of claim 9, wherein the means for storing comprises a non-volatile memory.

14. The replaceable printer component of claim 9, wherein the replaceable printer component comprises one of an inkjet cartridge, an inkjet printhead assembly, a toner cartridge, and an ink supply.

15. The replaceable printer component of claim 9, wherein the replaceable printer component comprises a peripheral device of the printing system.
