Abstract

Provided are systems and methods for providing human cell cultures. Further provided are cultures of feeder cells for use in stem cell technology, as well as cultures, culture systems and methods for maintenance and propagating of stem cells in an undifferentiated state as well as for the development of somatic cells cultures from stem cells, the somatic cell cultures being free of extraembryonic cells.

79. A method for maintaining stem cells in an undifferentiated state, the method comprising incubating said cells with a culture system comprising feeder cells expanded from human umbilical cord cells, human embryonic fibroblast cells (HEF) or a combination of same.

80. The method of claim 79, wherein the stem cells are embryonic stem cells.

81. The method of claim 79, wherein the stem cells are human stem cells.

82. The method of claim 79, wherein the feeder cells comprise fibroblast cells.

83. The method of claim 79, for propagating the stem cells in an undifferentiated state.

84. The method of claim 79, wherein the culture system further comprises a humanized serum replacement substitute.

85. The method of claim 79, wherein the culture system is essentially free of antibacterial agents and/or reducing agents.

86. A method for maintaining stem cells in an undifferentiated state, the method comprising incubating the cells with a culture system comprising feeder cells expanded from human umbilical cord cells and being essentially fibroblast cells, whereby the stem cells are maintained in an undifferentiated state.

87. The method of claim 86, wherein the stem cells are embryonic stem cells.

88. The method of claim 86, wherein the stem cells are human stem cells.

89. The method of claim 86, wherein the culture system is essentially free of antibacterial agents.

90. The method of claim 86, for propagating the stem cells in an undifferentiated state.

91. The method of claim 86, wherein the feeder cells consist of 100% fibroblast cells.
