Abstract

An internal dry powder delivery system through a working channel of an endoscopic cannula for directly applying the powder form medication to an internal tissue/organ site, includes an elongated tubular delivery channel and a powder supply device for producing pressurized gas mixing with the dry powder for feeding to form a mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas delivering to an internal tissue/organ site through the delivery channel via endoscopic cannula. It ensures a smooth powder release by preventing liquid from accumulation at the tip of the delivery channel and offers physicians a new powder form drug delivery method via endoscope. Also, it offers new minimal invasive application by directly and precisely applying the powder format drug to the internal sites of human gastrointestinal organ via endoscope to achieve hemostasis, anti-inflammation, anti-ulcer and anti-tumor treatment, etc.

Claims

1. An internal dry powder delivery system for delivering dry powder to an internal operation site of beings, comprising:

an elongated tubular delivery channel having a feeding opening at one end thereof, an emitting opening at a distal end thereof adapted for reaching a position adjacent to said internal operation site, a diameter of 3.2 mm or less, and a length long enough for said emitting opening reaching said internal operation site; and

a powder supply device, which is connected to said feeding opening of said delivery channel, comprising;

a gas powder mixer having a gas powder mixing chamber which has an inlet for feeding in a predetermined amount of dry powder therein and an outlet communicating with said feeding opening of said delivery channel; and

a pressurized gas feeder producing pressurized gas in said gas powder chamber mixing with said dry powder to form a mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas for blowing into said delivery channel through said feeding opening thereof, thereby a continuous feeding of said pressurized gas and said mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas into said delivery channel from said gas powder chamber substantially delivers said mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas to said emitting opening of said delivery channel and sprays onto said designated internal operation site.

The system, as recited in claim 1, wherein said elongated tubular delivery channel comprises a powder delivery catheter, and said powder supply device further comprises a powder dispenser which is connected to said gas powder mixer and communicated with said gas powder mixing chamber therein for filling said dry powder adapted to be delivered via said powder delivery catheter to said designated internal operation site.

3. The system, as recited in claim 2, wherein said pressurized gas feeder further comprises a gas delivery tube having a first end connected with the gas powder mixer and communicating with said gas powder mixing chamber therein and a second end connected to an external gas source.

The system, as recited in claim 3, wherein said elongated tubular delivery channel further comprises female luers and male luer locks provided at said feeding opening of said powder delivery catheter, and said gas delivery tube comprises a male luer lock and a female luer, wherein said end of said gas delivery tube is communicated with said gas powder mixing chamber via said male luer lock and said female luer is connected to said second end of said gas delivery tube and said external gas source.

The system, as recited in claim 3, wherein said external gas source produces an airflow in said gas delivery tube to form a maintaining gas flow therethrough while said powder delivery catheter is inserted through an endoscope working channel of an endoscope to said designated internal operation site, wherein said maintaining gas flow is pressurized to flow through said gas delivery tube, said gas powder mixing chamber and said powder delivery catheter to ensure that a pressure inside said powder delivery catheter is higher than a pressure where said emitting opening of said powder delivery catheter is located to prevent reflux of gas and powder into said powder delivery catheter during insertion of said powder delivery catheter into said endoscope.

6. The system, as recited in claim 5, wherein a working gas flow is provided in said powder dispenser for delivering said dry powder to said designated internal operation site through said powder delivery catheter to emit via said emitting opening thereof.

The system, as recited in claim 3, further comprising a working gas flow switch and a maintaining gas flow switch provided at said gas powder mixer, wherein said outlet of said gas powder mixing chamber communicates with said feeding opening of said powder delivery catheter via a connecting channel, wherein a first end where said connecting channel connects said outlet end of said gas powder mixing chamber is defined as a first connection point, wherein one end of each of said working gas flow channel and said maintaining gas flow channel are joined for connecting to said external gas source while another end of the working gas flow channel is extended and connected to said inlet end of said gas powder mixing chamber and another end of said maintaining gas flow channel is extended and connected to said connecting channel at a second connection point.

The system, as recited in claim 6, further comprising a working gas flow switch and a maintaining gas flow switch provided at said gas powder mixer, wherein said outlet of said gas powder mixing chamber communicates with said feeding opening of said powder delivery catheter via a connecting channel, wherein a first end where said connecting channel connects said outlet end of said gas powder mixing chamber is defined as a first connection point, wherein one end of each of said working gas flow channel and said maintaining gas flow channel are joined for connecting to said external gas source while another end of the working gas flow channel is extended and connected to said inlet end of said gas powder mixing chamber and another end of said maintaining gas flow channel is extended and connected to said connecting channel at a second connection point.

The system, as recited in claim 8, wherein said external gas source supplies pressurized gas to flow through said working gas flow channel as said working gas flow to enter into said gas powder mixing chamber and to flow through said maintaining gas flow channel as said maintaining gas flow to a position between said feeding opening of said powder delivery catheter and said outlet end of said gas powder mixing chamber, wherein said working gas flow switch is provided at a positioned along said working gas flow channel for controlling a supply of the gas flow therethrough and said maintaining gas flow switch is provided at a position along said maintaining gas flow channel for controlling a supply of the gas flow therethrough.

The system, as recited in claim 9, wherein said maintaining gas flow is able to be adjusted via said maintaining gas flow switch to a pressure higher than a pressure in said internal operation site where said emitting opening of said powder delivery catheter is located, wherein said maintaining gas flow is pressurized to flow through said maintaining gas flow channel all the way to said feeding end of said powder delivery catheter to prevent reflux of gas and powder in said powder delivery catheter while said working gas flow remains closed thereat via said working gas flow switch, wherein by opening said working gas flow switch, said working gas flow enters said gas powder mixing chamber and pushes said dry powder in said gas powder mixing chamber forward into said powder delivery catheter.

11. The system, as recited in claim 2, wherein said gas is selected from a group consisting of medical use clean air, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.

12. The system, as recited in claim 6, wherein said gas is selected from a group consisting of medical use clean air, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.

13. The system, as recited in claim 9, wherein said gas is selected from a group consisting of medical use clean air, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.

14. The system, as recited in claim 2, wherein said dry powder contains particles being not exceed 400 um and having a diameter between 1 um-250 um.

15. The system, as recited in claim 6, wherein said dry powder contains particles being not exceed 400 um and having a diameter between 1 um-250 um.

16. The system, as recited in claim 9, wherein said dry powder contains particles being not exceed 400 um and having a diameter between 1 um-250 um.

17. The system, as recited in claim 14, wherein said dry powder is selected from a group consisting of anti-inflammatory medications, anti-ulcer medications and agents, anti-neoplastic medications, hemostat, biocompatible hemostat, adhesive, surgical sealants, immunosuppressive medication, nutrient powder, vaccine, anti-microbial drug, anti-adhesive materials, tissue enforcement materials, fistula closure materials, and wax.

The system, as recited in claim 15, wherein said dry powder is selected from a group consisting of anti-inflammatory medications, anti-ulcer medications and agents, anti-neoplastic medications, hemostat, biocompatible hemostat, adhesive, surgical sealants, immunosuppressive medication, nutrient powder, vaccine, anti-microbial drug, anti-adhesive materials, tissue enforcement materials, fistula closure materials, and wax.

19. The system, as recited in claim 16, wherein said dry powder is selected from a group consisting of anti-inflammatory medications, anti-ulcer medications and agents, anti-neoplastic medications, hemostat, biocompatible hemostat, adhesive, surgical sealants, immunosuppressive medication, nutrient powder, vaccine, anti-microbial drug, anti-adhesive materials, tissue enforcement materials, fistula closure materials, and wax.

20. A method of delivering dry powder to an internal operation site of beings, comprising the steps of:

(a) extending a distal end of powder delivery channel to an internal operation site;

(b) producing pressurized gas and mixing said pressurized gas with dry powder to form a mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas in a gas powder mixing chamber communicating with a feeding opening of said powder delivery channel; and

(c) continuously feeding said mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas and said pressurized gas from said gas powder mixing chamber into said powder delivery channel via said feeding opening until a predetermined amount of said mixture of dry powder and pressurized gas spraying out from an emitting opening of said distal end of said powder delivery channel for applying onto said internal operation site.

21. The method, as recited in claim 20, wherein the step (a) further comprises a step of inserting a powder delivery channel through an endoscope working channel to said internal operation site.

22. The method, as recited in claim 21, wherein the step (b) further comprises the steps of:

producing a maintaining gas flow through a gas delivery tube, said gas powder mixing chamber and said powder delivery channel; and

producing a working gas flow to delivering said powder to said internal operation site through said powder delivery channel to emit via said emitting opening thereof, wherein said maintaining gas flow ensuring a pressure inside said powder delivery channel is higher than a pressure at said internal operation site where said emitting opening located while said working gas flow ensuring a delivering of said powder to said internal operation site through said powder delivery channel.

23. The method, as recited in claim 21, wherein the step (b) further comprises the steps of:

producing a pressurized gas to flow through a working gas flow channel as a working gas flow to enter into said gas powder mixing chamber and to flow through a maintaining gas flow channel as a maintaining gas flow to a position between said feeding opening of said powder delivery channel and an outlet end of said gas powder mixing chamber;

adjusting a pressure of said maintaining gas flow via a maintaining gas flow switch to be higher than a pressure at said internal operation site where said emitting opening of said powder delivery channel located while said working gas flow remains closed via a working gas flow switch; and

enabling said working gas flow entering said gas powder mixing chamber and pushing said powder in said gas powder mixing chamber forward into said powder delivery channel via a working gas flow switch.

The method, as recited in claim 20, wherein said internal operation site is an internal organ in abdominal, thoracic and pelvic cavities and said powder is medication selected from a group consisting of biocompatible hemostats, adhesives, surgical sealants, anti-adhesion materials, tissue enforcement materials, fistula closure materials, and wax, for applying to said internal organ for a treatment selected from a group consisting of hemostasis, anti-inflammatory, anti-adhesion, tissue repair, congenital defect tissue repair, perforation repair, fistula closure, promote wound healing, and topical and localized chemotherapy/radiotherapy.

The method, as recited in claim 21, wherein said internal operation site is an internal organ in abdominal, thoracic and pelvic cavities and said powder is medication selected from a group consisting of biocompatible hemostats, adhesives, surgical sealants, anti-adhesion materials, tissue enforcement materials, fistula closure materials, and wax, for applying to said internal organ for a treatment selected from a group consisting of hemostasis, anti-inflammatory, anti-adhesion, tissue repair, congenital defect tissue repair, perforation repair, fistula closure, promote wound healing, and topical and localized chemotherapy/radiotherapy.

The method, as recited in claim 20, wherein said internal operation site is a digestive tract and said powder is a medication selected from a group consisting of anti-inflammatory medication, immunosuppressive medication, nutrient powder, vaccines, and anti-microbial drugs for a treatment for chronic colitis, malnutrition, and parasitic diseases.

The method, as recited in claim 21, wherein said internal operation site is a digestive tract and said powder is a medication selected from a group consisting of anti-inflammatory medication, immunosuppressive medication, nutrient powder, vaccines, and anti-microbial drugs for a treatment for chronic colitis, malnutrition, and parasitic diseases.
