Abstract

A storage and playback device is capable of being detachably coupled to an output device, such as speakers of an automobile. The device includes a wireless transceiver to receive compressed digital content automatically from a computer system via a wireless local area network based on user defined preferences input into the computer system. The wireless transceiver is communicably coupled to the wireless local area network when the wireless transceiver is a predetermined distance from a wireless local area network access point. The device also includes a decoder and converter to decompress and convert the digital content. The decompressed and converted digital content is sent to be played on the output device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving media content at a media playback system, wherein the media content includes data associated with the media content;

rendering the media content by the media playback system;

during the rendering the media content, communicating the data associated with the media content to a memory device associated with the media playback system to be stored in the memory device; and

transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to a server on an associated network, wherein information related to the data associated with the media content is presentable to a user accessing the server.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the associated network comprises the Internet, and wherein the server is configured to present the information related to the data associated with the media content via a web site.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the transferring the data associated with the media content comprises transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to an Internet gateway device over a local area network, wherein the Internet gateway device is configured to communicate with the server.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to the Internet gateway device is initiated in response to the media playback system coming into range of the local area network.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the data associated with the media content comprises metadata embedded within the media content.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the media content comprises broadcast radio content, and wherein the data associated with the media content comprises a radio tuner frequency and a time and date during which the media content is being rendered by the media playback system.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the media content comprises downloaded media content.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a user input at the media playback system to cause the data associated with the media content to be stored in the memory device associated with the media playback system.

9. A media playback system comprising:

a receiver configured to receive media content, wherein the media content includes data associated with the media content;

a memory device; and

a processing unit coupled to the receiver and the memory device, wherein the processing unit is configured to;

render the media content;

during the rendering the media content, communicate the data associated with the media content to the memory device to be stored in the memory device; and

transfer the data associated with the media content from the memory device to a server on an associated network, wherein information related to the data associated with the media content is presentable to a user accessing the server.

10. The media playback system of claim 9, wherein the associated network comprises the Internet, and wherein the server is configured to present the information related to the data associated with the media content via a web site.

11. The media playback system of claim 10, wherein the transferring the data associated with the media content comprises transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to an Internet gateway device over a local area network, wherein the Internet gateway device is configured to communicate with the server.

12. The media playback system of claim 11, wherein the transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to the Internet gateway device is initiated in response to the media playback system coming in range of the local area network.

13. The media playback system of claim 9, wherein the data associated with the media content comprises metadata embedded within the media content.

14. The media playback system of claim 9, wherein the media content comprises broadcast radio content, and wherein the data associated with the media content comprises a radio tuner frequency and a time and date during which the media content is being rendered by the media playback system.

15. The media playback system of claim 9, wherein the media content comprises downloaded media content.

16. The media playback system of claim 9, further comprising a user interface configured to receive a user input to cause the data associated with the media content to be stored in the memory device associated with the media playback system.

17. A computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving media content, wherein the media content includes data associated with the media content;

rendering the media content;

during the rendering the media content, communicating the data associated with the media content to a memory device to be stored in the memory device; and

transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to a server on an associated network, wherein information related to the data associated with the media content is presentable to a user accessing the server.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein the associated network comprises the Internet, and wherein the server is configured to present the information related to the data associated with the media content via a web site.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the transferring the data associated with the media content comprises transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to an Internet gateway device over a local area network, wherein the Internet gateway device is configured to communicate with the server.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the transferring the data associated with the media content from the memory device to the Internet gateway device is initiated in response to a device that includes the computer-readable medium coming into range of the local area network.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein the data associated with the media content comprises metadata embedded within the media content.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein the media content comprises broadcast radio content, and wherein the data associated with the media content comprises a radio tuner frequency and a time and date during which the media content is being rendered.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein the media content comprises downloaded media content.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein the operations further comprise receiving a user input to cause the data associated with the media content to be stored in the memory device associated with the media playback system.

25. A method comprising:

receiving, at a server from a media playback system, data associated with media content rendered on the media playback system;

determining, at the server, additional information associated with the media content; and

presenting, via the server, the additional information associated with the media content to a user accessing the server.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the server is connected to the Internet, and wherein the server is configured to present the additional information associated with the media content via a web site.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the receiving data comprises receiving the data associated with the media content via an Internet gateway device connected to the media playback system by a local area network.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the data associated with the media content comprises metadata embedded within the media content.

29. The method of claim 25, wherein the media content comprises broadcast radio content, and wherein the data associated with the media content comprises a radio tuner frequency and a time and date during which the media content is being rendered by the media playback system.

30. The method of claim 25, wherein the media content comprises downloaded media content.

31. The method of claim 25, wherein the media content comprises a song, and wherein the additional information comprises at least one of an artist for the song, album art associated with the song, lyrics for the song, concert dates for the artist for the song, or an opportunity to purchase subsequent media content related to the song.

32. A computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a media playback system, data associated with media content rendered on the media playback system;

determining additional information associated with the media content; and

presenting the additional information associated with the media content to a user.

33. The computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the presenting the additional information comprises presenting the additional information associated with the media content over the Internet via a web site.

34. The computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the receiving data comprises receiving the data associated with the media content via an Internet gateway device connected to the media playback system by a local area network.

35. The computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the data associated with the media content comprises metadata embedded within the media content.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the media content comprises broadcast radio content, and wherein the data associated with the media content comprises a radio tuner frequency and a time and date during which the media content is being rendered by the media playback system.

37. The computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the media content comprises downloaded media content.

38. The computer-readable medium of claim 32, wherein the media content comprises a song, and wherein the additional information comprises at least one of an artist for the song, album art associated with the song, lyrics for the song, concert dates for the artist for the song, or an opportunity to purchase subsequent media content related to the song.

39. An apparatus comprising:

a computing device configured to;

receive, from a media playback system, data associated with media content rendered on the media playback system;

determine additional information associated with the media content; and

present the additional information associated with the media content to a user.

40. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the presenting the additional information comprises presenting the additional information associated with the media content over the Internet via a web site.

41. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the receiving data comprises receiving the data associated with the media content via an Internet gateway device connected to the media playback system by a local area network.

42. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the data associated with the media content comprises metadata embedded within the media content.

43. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the media content comprises broadcast radio content, and wherein the data associated with the media content comprises a radio tuner frequency and a time and date during which the media content is being rendered by the media playback system.

44. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the media content comprises downloaded media content.

45. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the media content comprises a song, and wherein the additional information comprises at least one of an artist for the song, album art associated with the song, lyrics for the song, concert dates for the artist for the song, or an opportunity to purchase subsequent media content related to the song.
