Abstract

Remote access of content in an IMS system is described. A first IMS channel is established between, for example, a user terminal and an IMS Gateway (IG) for control signaling. A second IMS channel is established between, for example, the user terminal and the IG for conveying the content being remotely accessed. Due to limitations in the network, Quality of Service (QoS, or bandwidth) reservations are handled differently on the originating and terminating sides. For example, on the originating side, a single QoS reservation is used for both the first and second IMS channels, whereas on the terminating side separate QoS reservations can be used for the first and second IMS channels.

Claims

1. A method for remote access of content in an Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) communication system, the method comprising:

establishing a first IMS channel with a device having access to said content;

performing control signaling associated with said remote access of said content via said first IMS channel;

establishing a second IMS channel with said device having access to said content using a Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value equal to zero; and

receiving said content via said second IMS channel.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said device having access to said content is an IMS Gateway (IG), and said steps of establishing a first IMS channel, performing control signaling, establishing a second IMS channel and receiving said content are all performed by a terminal device.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said step of establishing a first IMS channel further comprises:

transmitting a SIP message including a non-zero Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value,

wherein said step of performing control signaling further comprises;

performing Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) signaling to discover services available from said device having access to said content, and

wherein said step of establishing said second IMS channel further comprises;

transmitting a SIP message including said Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value of zero.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said device having access to said content is an IMS (IG), and said steps of establishing a first IMS channel, performing control signaling, establishing a second IMS channel and receiving said content are all performed by an RAN node.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said step of establishing a first IMS channel further comprises:

receiving a first SIP message including a first, non-zero Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value; and

establishing said first IMS channel toward said IG based on said non-zero QoS reservation value.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein said step of establishing said second IMS channel further comprises:

receiving a second SIP message including a second QoS reservation value of zero; and

forwarding said second SIP message toward one of a remote access server and an IPTV control server to establish said second IMS channel without updating said non-zero QoS reservation associated with said first IMS channel;

receiving a third SIP message including a request to update said non-zero QoS reservation associated with said first IMS channel to a value which is a composite QoS value associated with said first IMS channel and said second IMS channel; and

updating said non-zero QoS reservation to said composite QoS value.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein said step of performing control signaling further comprises:

forwarding Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) signaling toward said device having access to said content;

wherein said step of receiving said content via said second IMS channel further comprises;

forwarding said content toward a terminal device which is remotely accessing said content.

The method of claim 1, wherein said device having access to said content is a Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compatible device connected to an IMS Gateway (IG), and said steps of establishing a first IMS channel, performing control signaling, establishing a second IMS channel and receiving said content are all performed by said IG.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein said step of establishing a first IMS channel further comprises:

receiving a first SIP message requesting establishment of said first IMS channel with a terminal device; and

transmitting a second SIP message agreeing to the establishment of said first IMS channel.

wherein said step of performing control signaling further comprises;

receiving DLNA signaling from a terminal device via said first IMS channel;

transmitting DLNA signaling toward said DLNA-compatible device; and

transmitting DLNA signaling toward said terminal device via said first IMS channel.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said step of establishing said second IMS channel further comprises:

receiving a third SIP message requesting establishment of said second IMS channel with a terminal device; and

transmitting a fourth SIP message agreeing to the establishment of said second IMS channel;

wherein said step of receiving said content via said second IMS channel further comprises;

receiving said content from said DLNA-compatible device; and

transmitting said content via said second IMS channel toward said terminal device.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

transmitting, by said IG, a SIP message including a request to update a QoS reservation in an IMS network node associated with said first IMS channel to a value which is a composite QoS value associated with both said first IMS channel and said second IMS channel.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

transmitting, by said IG, a SIP message including a request to restore a QoS reservation in an edge router node for said first IMS channel to an original value.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

transmitting, by said IG, a SIP message including a request to increase a QoS reservation in an edge router node for said second IMS channel from zero to a value associated with said second IMS channel.

14. A device for remote access of content in an Internet Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) communication system, the device comprising:

a processor configured to establish a first IMS channel with a device having access to said content, to perform control signaling associated with said remote access of said content via said first IMS channel, to establishing a second IMS channel with said device having access to said content using a Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value equal to zero, and to receive said content via said second IMS channel.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein said device is a terminal device and said device having access to said content is an IMS Gateway (IG).

16. The device of claim 15, wherein said terminal device includes a transceiver and said processor is further configured to establish said first IMS channel by controlling said transceiver to transmit a SIP message including a non-zero Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value.

The device of claim 15, wherein said processor is further configured to perform said control signaling by performing Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) signaling to discover services available from said IG, and wherein said terminal device includes a transceiver and said processor is further configured to transmit a SIP message including said Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value of zero.

18. The device of claim 14, wherein said device is a RAN node and said device having access to said content is an IMS gateway (IG).

The device of claim 18, wherein said processor is further configured to establish said first IMS channel by receiving a first SIP message including a first, non-zero Quality of Service (QoS) reservation value, and by establishing said first IMS channel toward said IG based on said non-zero QoS reservation value.

The device of claim 19, wherein processor is further configured to establishing said second IMS channel by receiving a second SIP message including a second QoS reservation value of zero, and forward said second SIP message toward one of a remote access server and an IPTV control server to establish said second IMS channel without updating said non-zero QoS reservation associated with said first IMS channel.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein said processor is further configured to receive a third SIP message including a request to update said non-zero QoS reservation associated with said first IMS channel to a value which is a composite QoS value associated with said first IMS channel and said second IMS channel and to update said non-zero QoS reservation to said composite QoS value.

22. The device of claim 14, wherein said device is an IMS Gateway (IG) and said device having access to said content is a Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compatible device connected to said IG.

The device of claim 22, wherein said processor is further configured to transmitting a SIP message including a request to update a QoS reservation in an IMS network node associated with said first IMS channel to a value which is a composite QoS value associated with both said first IMS channel and said second IMS channel.

24. The device of claim 22, wherein said processor is further configured to transmit a SIP message including a request to restore a QoS reservation in an edge router node for said first IMS channel to an original value.

25. The device of claim 22, wherein said processor is further configured to transmit a SIP message including a request to increase a QoS reservation in an edge router node for said second IMS channel from zero to a value associated with said second IMS channel.
