Abstract

A Base Station (BS), a Mobile Station (MS), and a millimeter Wave (mmWave) Access Point (mmAP), for use in a mobile communication system that includes a plurality of Base Stations BSs capable of communicating with a plurality of Mobile Stations (MSs), are provided. The BS includes a cellular band transceiver for communicating in a cellular band, an mmWave band transceiver for communicating in the mmWave band, and a controller for controlling both the cellular band transceiver and the mmWave band transceiver for communication with an MS.

Claims

1. A Base Station (BS) for use in a mobile communication system that includes a plurality of BSs capable of communicating with a plurality of Mobile Stations (MSs), the BS comprising:

a cellular band transceiver for communicating in a cellular band;

a millimeter wave (mmWave) band transceiver for communicating in the mmWave band; and

a controller for controlling both the cellular band transceiver and the mmWave band transceiver for communication with an MS.

2. The BS of claim 1, wherein the controller controls to form a beam through which communication in the mmWave band is performed with the MS.

3. The BS of claim 1, wherein the communication with the MS is bidirectional.

4. The BS of claim 3, wherein the bidirectional communication is performed using one of Time Division Duplexing (TDD) and (FDD) Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD).

5. The BS of claim 1, wherein at least one control channel is communicated in the cellular band and at least one data packet is communicated in the mmWave band.

The BS of claim 5, wherein the at least one control channel communicated in the cellular band comprises a control channel communicated from the BS to the MS that includes at least one of a synchronization channel, a broadcast control channel, a packet data control channel, a power control channel, and an acknowledgement channel.

The BS of claim 5, wherein the at least one control channel communicated in the cellular band comprises a control channel communicated from the MS to the BS that includes at least one of a pilot channel, a sounding channel, an acknowledgment channel, a channel state information feedback, and a bandwidth request.

8. The BS of claim 1, wherein channel state information feedback is communicated in the cellular band that indicates the channel quality of the mmWave band.

9. The BS of claim 1, wherein a first data packet is communicated in the cellular band and a second data packet is communicated in the mmWave band.

10. The BS of claim 1, wherein the controller further controls the mmWave band transceiver for communication with one of another BS and an mmWave Access Point (AP).

11. The BS of claim 10, wherein the BS communicates with a Packet Data Server/Gateway via the communication with the other BS and the communication with the other BS occurs in an mmWave band.

12. A Mobile Station (MS) for use in a mobile communication system that includes a plurality of Base Stations (BSs) capable of communicating with a plurality of MSs, the MS comprising:

a cellular band transceiver for communicating in a cellular band;

a millimeter wave (mmWave) band transceiver for communicating in the mmWave band; and

a controller for controlling the cellular band transceiver for communication with a BS and for controlling the mmWave band transceiver for communication with one of the BS and an mmWave Access Point (mmAP).

13. The MS of claim 12, wherein the controller controls to form a beam through which communication in the mmWave band is performed with the one of the BS and the mmAP.

14. The MS of claim 12, wherein the communication with the one of the BS and the mmAP is bidirectional.

15. The MS of claim 14, wherein the bidirectional communication is performed using one of Time Division Duplexing (TDD) and (FDD) Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD).

16. The MS of claim 12, wherein, when communicating with the BS, at least one control channel is communicated in the cellular band and at least one data packet is communicated in the mmWave band.

17. The MS of claim 16, wherein the at least one control channel communicated in the cellular band comprises a control channel communicated from the BS to the MS that includes at least one of a synchronization channel, a broadcast control channel, a packet data control channel, a power control channel, and an acknowledgement channel.

18. The MS of claim 16, wherein the at least one control channel communicated in the cellular band comprises a control channel communicated from the MS to the BS that includes at least one of a pilot channel, a sounding channel, an acknowledgment channel, a channel state information feedback, and a bandwidth request.

19. The MS of claim 12, wherein channel state information feedback is communicated in the cellular band that indicates the channel quality of the mmWave band.

20. The MS of claim 12, wherein, when communicating with the BS, a first data packet is communicated in the cellular band and a second data packet is communicated in the mmWave band.

21. A millimeter wave (mmWave) Access Point (mmAP) for use in a mobile communication system that includes a plurality of Base Stations (BSs) capable of communicating with a plurality of Mobile Stations (MSs), the mmAP comprising:

an mmWave band transceiver for communicating in the mmWave band; and

a controller for controlling the mmWave band transceiver for communication with an MS.

22. The mmAP of claim 21, wherein, when performing communication with the MS, the controller further controls the mmWave band transceiver for communication with a BS, and

wherein the controller further controls to relay signals from the BS to the MS and from the MS to the BS.

23. The mmAP of claim 21, further comprising a cellular band transceiver for communicating in a cellular band,

wherein, when performing communication with the MS via the mmWave band, the controller controls the cellular band transceiver for communication with a BS, and

wherein the controller further controls to relay signals from the BS to the MS and from the MS to the BS.

24. The mmAP of claim 21, further comprising a fixed line communication link to one of a BS and a Packet Data Server/Gateway.

25. The mmAP of claim 21, wherein the mmAP is one of a Relay Station (RS) and a femto BS.

26. A Base Station (BS) for use in a mobile communication system that includes a plurality of BSs capable of communicating with a plurality of Mobile Stations (MSs), the BS comprising:

a cellular band transceiver for communicating with an MS in a cellular band;

a millimeter wave (mmWave) band transceiver for communicating with at least one other BS in the mmWave band; and

a controller for controlling both the cellular band transceiver and the mmWave band transceiver,

wherein the controller controls to form a first beam through which communication is performed in the mmWave band in a first time slot with a first BS and controls to form a second beam through which communication is performed in the mmWave band in a second time slot with a second BS.

27. The BS of claim 26, wherein communication in each of the in a first time slot and the first time slot is bidirectional.

28. The BS of claim 26, wherein the communication in a first time slot is a communication from the BS to first BS and the communication in the second time slot is a communication from the BS to second BS, and

further wherein a communication in the mmWave band from the first BS to the BS is performed in a third time slot, and a communication in the mmWave band from the second BS to the BS is performed in a fourth time slot.

29. A Base Station (BS) for use in a mobile communication system that includes a plurality of BSs capable of communicating with a plurality of Mobile Stations (MSs), the BS comprising:

a cellular band transceiver for communicating with an MS in a cellular band;

a millimeter wave (mmWave) band transceiver for communicating with at least one other BS in the mmWave band; and

a controller for controlling both the cellular band transceiver and the mmWave band transceiver, and for detecting network congestion between the BS and a Packet Data Server/Gateway,

wherein, when the controller detects network congestion, the controller controls to form a beam through which communication is performed in the mmWave band with another BS that would result in less congestion between the BS and a Packet Data Server/Gateway.
