Abstract

A substrate having a coding pattern disposed thereon or therein. The coding pattern comprises a plurality of macrodots encoding first and second Reed-Solomon data symbols. Each first Reed-Solomon data symbol is represented by d macrodots, each of the d macrodots occupying a respective position from a plurality of predetermined possible positions p within a first symbol layout, the respective positions of the d macrodots representing one of a plurality of possible data values. Each second Reed-Solomon data symbol is represented by d macrodots, each of the d macrodots occupying a respective position from a plurality of predetermined possible positions p within a second symbol layout which is different than the first symbol layout, the respective positions of the d macrodots representing one of a plurality of possible data values.

Claims

1. A substrate having a coding pattern disposed thereon or therein, said coding pattern comprising a plurality of macrodots encoding first and second Reed-Solomon data symbols, wherein:

each first Reed-Solomon data symbol is represented by d macrodots, each of said d macrodots occupying a respective position from a plurality of predetermined possible positions p within a first symbol layout, the respective positions of said d macrodots representing one of a plurality of possible data values;

each second Reed-Solomon data symbol is represented by d macrodots, each of said d macrodots occupying a respective position from a plurality of predetermined possible positions p within a second symbol layout which is different than said first symbol layout, the respective positions of said d macrodots representing one of a plurality of possible data values; and

2. The substrate of claim 1, wherein said first symbol layout and said second symbol layout are each configured for mutual interlocking.

3. The substrate of claim 2, wherein said first symbol layout is substantially L-shaped and said second symbol layout is substantially H-shaped.

4. The substrate of claim 1, wherein said coding pattern comprises contiguous first and second Reed-Solomon data symbols

5. The substrate of claim 1, wherein d is an integer value of 2, 3, 4 or 5 and p is an integer value of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11.

6. The substrate of claim 1, wherein each of said first and second Reed-Solomon data symbols provides i possible symbol values for a j-bit symbol, and wherein (ĩ

2^j) unused symbol values are treated as erasures.

7. The substrate of claim 6, wherein d=3 and p=7 which provides 35 possible symbol values for a 5-bit data symbol, and wherein 3 unused symbol values are treated as erasures.

8. The substrate of claim 6, wherein d=2 and p=7 which provides 21 possible symbol values for a 4-bit data symbol, and wherein 5 unused symbol values are treated as erasures.

9. The substrate of claim 1, wherein said plurality of macrodots further encode registration symbols, wherein one or more of said registration symbols identify an integer value of d.

10. The substrate of claim 9, wherein the value of d is selected to modify at least one of:

an overall visibility of the coding pattern; and

a data capacity of the coding pattern.

11. The substrate of claim 1, wherein said coding pattern further comprises a plurality of target elements defining a target grid, said targets elements being distinguishable from said macrodots.

12. The substrate of claim 11, wherein said coding pattern comprises a plurality of symbol groups, each symbol group comprising at least one target element, at least one registration symbol and a plurality of said data symbols.

13. The substrate of claim 12, wherein said target grid comprises a plurality of grid cells, each grid cell having a target element at each corner thereof such that adjacent grid cells share target elements, and wherein each grid cell contains one of said symbol groups.

14. The substrate of claim 12, wherein said coding pattern comprises a plurality of tags, each tag comprising a plurality of symbol groups, one or more registration symbols and a plurality of target elements.

15. The substrate of claim 14, wherein each symbol group comprises a set of said registration symbols, said set of registration symbols identifying the integer value of d.

16. The substrate of claim 12, wherein said registration symbols identify one or more of:

a translation of a symbol group relative to a tag containing said symbol group, each symbol group containing a plurality of said data symbols;

an orientation of a layout of said data symbols with respect to a target grid; and

a flag.

A substrate having a coding pattern disposed thereon or therein, said coding pattern comprising a plurality of macrodots encoding a plurality of data symbols, wherein each data symbol is represented by d macrodots, each of said d macrodots occupying a respective position from 7 predetermined possible positions within a symbol layout, the respective positions of said d macrodots representing one of a plurality of possible data values.

18. The substrate according to claim 17, wherein d is 2 or 3.

19. The substrate of claim 17, wherein d=3, which provides 35 possible symbol values for a 5-bit data symbol, and wherein 3 unused symbol values are treated as erasures.

20. The substrate of claim 17, wherein d=2, which provides 21 possible symbol values for a 4-bit data symbol, and wherein 5 unused symbol values are treated as erasures.
