Abstract

A method and system of a supplementary fuel system for delivering hydrogen to an engine is described.

Claims

1. A method, implemented by a computing system programmed to perform the following, comprising:

receiving at least one engine parameter associated with emissions of an engine at a computerized injection controller;

determining, by the computerized injection controller, a desired amount of hydrogen gas to deliver to the engine; and

controlling an injector, by the computerized injection controller, to deliver the desired amount of hydrogen to deliver to the engine.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one engine parameter is at least one of a boost pressure indicator or a revolutions per minute (RPM) indicator.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said determining comprises using a map having a plurality of cell locations, each of the plurality of cell locations contains a number that indicates an amount of time the injector is activated to deliver hydrogen to the engine.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the at least one engine parameter is at least one of a boost pressure indicator or a revolutions per minute (RPM) indicator, and wherein said determining comprises determining which of the plurality of cell locations to use based on the boost pressure indicator and RPM indicator.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

calculating, by the computerized injection controller, an output indicative of the emissions of the engine; and

providing the output to a user via a user interface device.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said providing the output on the user interface device comprises displaying the output on a display of a vehicle or machine containing the engine.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling comprises controlling the desired amount of hydrogen to deliver to an air intake of a vehicle containing the engine.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

an injector coupled to receive hydrogen gas on a first injection line from a hydrogen fuel generator and to deliver the hydrogen gas on a second injection line to an engine; and

a computerized injection controller coupled to injector, wherein the computerized injection controller is configured to receive at least one engine parameter associated with emissions of the engine, to determine a desired amount of the hydrogen gas to deliver to the engine, and to control the injector to deliver the desired amount of hydrogen to the engine on the second injection line.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computerized injection controller is programmable.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the engine is a vehicle engine to operate in a vehicle.

11. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the engine is to operate in a machine.

12. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computerized injection controller is coupled to a user interface device, and wherein the user interface device is configured to indicate the emissions of the engine.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the user interface device is a display in a vehicle, and wherein the user interface device is configured to display at least one of a fuel efficiency indicator, a emissions indicator, or a service indicator.

14. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising an air intake of a vehicle containing the engine, wherein the injector is configured to deliver the desired amount of hydrogen gas on the second injection line into the air intake of the vehicle.

15. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to perform a method comprising:

receiving at least one engine parameter associated with emissions of an engine;

determining a desired amount of hydrogen gas to deliver to the engine; and

controlling an injector to deliver the desired amount of hydrogen to deliver to the engine.

16. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15, wherein the at least one engine parameter is at least one of a boost pressure indicator and a revolutions per minute (RPM) indicator.

17. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15, wherein said determining comprises using a map having a plurality of cell locations, each of the plurality of cell locations contains a number that indicates an amount of time the injector is on to deliver hydrogen to the engine.

18. The computer readable storage medium of claim 17, wherein the at least one engine parameter is at least one of a boost pressure indicator and a revolutions per minute (RPM) indicator, and wherein said determining comprises determining which of the plurality of cell locations to use based on the boost pressure indicator and RPM indicator.

19. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15, further comprising:

calculating an output indicative of the emissions of the engine; and

providing the output to a user via a user interface device.

20. The computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein said providing the output on the user interface device comprises displaying the output on a display of a vehicle or machine containing the engine.
