Abstract

A code-division-multiple-access (CDMA) system employing spread-spectrum modulation. The CDMA system has a base station (BS), and a plurality of subscriber units. The signals transmitted between the base station and subscriber unit use spread-spectrum modulation. The improvement apparatus for adaptive forward power control (APC) from a base station (BS) to a subscriber unit (SU), includes sending from the base station, using spread-spectrum modulation, a BS-spreading code on a forward channel. The subscriber unit despreads the BS-spreading code on the forward channel as a despread signal, determines a first power level P.sub.d which includes power of the despread signal plus noise and a second power level P.sub.N, which includes despread-noise power. The subscriber unit determines a first error signal e.sub.1, from the first power level P.sub.d, the second power level P.sub.N, and a required signal-to-noise ratio SNR.sub.REQ for service type, and a second error signal e.sub.2, from a measure of total received power P.sub.r and an automatic gain control (AGC) set point P.sub.o. The subscriber unit forms a combined error signal from the first error signal e.sub.1, the second error signal e.sub.2, a first weight a.sub.1 and a second weight a.sub.2, and hard limits the combined error signal to form a single APC bit. The APC bit is transmitted to the base station. In response to the APC bit, the base station adjusts transmitter power to the subscriber unit.

Claims

1. A code division multiple access subscriber unit comprising:

a circuit, operatively coupled to an antenna, configured to produce a first channel including a pilot;

wherein the first channel to be included on only one of an in-phase (I) channel or a quadrature (Q) channel; and

the antenna configured to output a radio frequency signal derived at least in part from the I channel and Q channel.

2. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to combine the I channel and the Q channel with a complex sequence.

3. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 2, wherein the combining is by multiplication.

4. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 2, wherein the complex sequence comprises at least two pseudo noise sequences.

5. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to include message data on at least the other of the I channel and the Q channel not including the first channel.

6. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 5, wherein the circuit is further configured to include message data on the I channel and the Q channel.

7. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to apply a gain to a message data channel so that a power level of the message data channel is separately adjusted from the first channel.

8. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 7, wherein the circuit is further configured to receive power commands from a base station and the circuit is further configured to adjust a transmit power level of the radio frequency signal in response to the power commands.

9. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 5, wherein the circuit is further configured to access a wireless network by transmitting the first channel and the message data.

10. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to produce power commands to be included on only one of the I channel or the Q channel.

11. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 10, wherein the pilot and the power commands are on a same one of the I channel or the Q channel.

12. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 11, wherein the same one is the I channel.

13. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to produce a signaling channel to be included on only one of the I channel or the Q channel.

14. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 13, wherein the signaling channel is included on only the Q channel.

15. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to produce a plurality of message data channels;

wherein the plurality of message data channels have different data rates.

16. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 15, wherein the plurality of message data channels includes a first message data channel having a first data rate and a second message data channel having a second data rate and a third message data channel having a third data rate;

wherein the second and third data rates are a same data rate and the first data rate is different than the second or third data rate.

17. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 16, wherein the second data rate is higher than the first data rate.

18. The code division multiple access subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the circuit is further configured to produce a control channel and a message data channel;

wherein the control channel includes information indicating a data rate of the message data channel.
