Abstract

A system for cataract surgery on an eye of a patient is described. In one embodiment, the system comprises a first laser source configured to deliver a first laser beam in a pulsed form at a first pulse energy; a second laser source configured to deliver a second laser beam in a pulsed form at a second pulse energy greater than the first pulse energy; an scanning optical system, configured to: receive the first and second laser beams; and adjust a first focus position of the first laser beam, and a second focus position of the second laser beam, in up to three dimensions to direct the first and second laser beams onto one or more targeted tissue structure portions of the eye of the patient; a controller operatively coupled to the scanning optical system and configured to cause the scanning optical system to adjust the first focus position to photodisrupt a first tissue structure portion with the first laser beam, and subsequently adjust the second focus position to further photodisrupt the first tissue structure portion with the second laser beam.

Claims

1. A system for cataract surgery on an eye of a patient, comprising:

a. a first laser source configured to deliver a first laser beam in a pulsed form at a first pulse energy;

b. a second laser source configured to deliver a second laser beam in a pulsed form at a second pulse energy greater than the first pulse energy;

c. an scanning optical system, configured to;

i. receive the first and second laser beams; and

ii. adjust a first focus position of the first laser beam, and a second focus position of the second laser beam, in up to three dimensions to direct the first and second laser beams onto one or more targeted tissue structure portions of the eye of the patient;

d. a controller operatively coupled to the scanning optical system and configured to cause the scanning optical system to adjust the first focus position to photodisrupt a first tissue structure portion with the first laser beam, and subsequently adjust the second focus position to further photodisrupt the first tissue structure portion with the second laser beam.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first pulse energy is between about one-half microjoule and about 50 microjoules.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the second pulse energy is between about 50 microjoules and about 5,000 microjoules.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the first laser source is configured to produce laser pulses having a first pulse duration between about 100 femtoseconds and about 10 picoseconds.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the second laser source is configured to produce laser pulses having a second pulse duration between about 10 picoseconds and about 10 nanoseconds.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to control the optical system to direct the first and second laser beams based upon a predetermined treatment pattern.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the first tissue structure portion is a portion of a crystalline lens of the eye.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is operatively coupled to the first and second laser sources, and configured to control the first and second pulse energies.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the predetermined pattern is selected to divide the lens into two or more discrete segments.

10. The system of claim 6, wherein the predetermined pattern comprises a three-dimensional pattern wherein two or more pulses are targeted for two or more different depths within the targeted tissue structure portion.

The system of claim 6, wherein the predetermined pattern comprises a first grouping of pulses to be directed to the targeted tissue structure portion, and a second grouping of pulses to be directed to the targeted tissue structure portion, such that the first grouping is comprised of a substantially distinct range of pulse energies relative to the second grouping.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the first grouping comprises a relatively low pulse energy and the second grouping comprises a relatively high pulse energy.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the first grouping is directed to the targeted tissue structure portion before the second grouping.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the first grouping is directed to a deeper portion of the targeted tissue structure portion than the second grouping.

15. The system of claim 14, further comprising a third grouping directed to the targeted tissue structure portion at a depth different than that of the first or second groupings.
