Abstract

The invention relates to printable films comprising a substrate and at least a surface layer, said layer covering at least one face of said substrate and comprising a water-dispersible polymer and an ethylenically unsaturated compound; to a process for the manufacture of such films; to printed films and especially to printed labels obtained from such printable films.

10. A printable surface layer, comprisingto 98% by weight of an aliphatic polyester based polyurethane;

and

2 to 90% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated compound.

11. The printable surface layer of claim 10, wherein said ethylenically unsaturated compound comprises an ester derivative of an α

,β

-ethylenically unsaturated acid with a polyol or alkoxylated polyol.

12. The printable surface layer of claim 11, wherein said α

,β

-ethylenically unsaturated acid is selected from the group consisting of acrylic acids, methacrylic acids, itaconic acids, citraconic acids, maleic acids and fumaric acids.

13. The printable surface layer of claim 12, wherein said α

,β

-ethylenically unsaturated acid is an acrylic acid or a methacrylic acids.

14. The printable surface layer of claim 10, wherein said ethylenically unsaturated compound comprises polyfunctional acrylates.

15. The printable surface layer of claim 10, further comprising a crosslinker selected from the group consisting of isocyante, epoxy, aziridine and silane derivatives.

16. The printable surface layer of claim 15, wherein said crosslinker is an aziridine-based crosslinker.

17. The printable surface layer of claim 10, further comprising a silica dispersion.

18. The printable surface layer of claim 10, further comprising an anti-blocking additive.

19. The printable surface layer of claim 10, further comprising a pigment.

20. The printable surface layer of claim 10, further comprising an antistatic agent.

21. The printable surface layer of claim 10, wherein said ethylenically unsaturated compound comprises 1 to 10 ethylenical bonds per molecule.

22. The printable surface layer of claim 21, wherein said ethylenically unsaturated compound comprises 2 to 5 ethylenical bonds per molecule.

23. The printable surface layer of claim 10, wherein said layer does not contain an additional polymerization photoinitiator.

24. A printable surface layer, comprisingto 98% by weight of a urethane polymer;

2 to 90% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated compound; and

a silicate dispersion,

wherein said urethane polymer is not an polyurethane acrylate.

25. The printable surface layer of claim 24, further comprising a crosslinking agent.

26. The printable surface layer of claim 25, wherein said crosslinking agent is an aziridine derivative.

27. The printable surface layer of claim 24, wherein said layer does not contain an additional polymerization photoinitiator.

28. A printable surface layer, comprising:

an aliphatic polyester based polyurethane polymer;

an ethylenically unsaturated compound;

a crosslinking agent; and

a silicate dispersion,

wherein said layer does not contain an additional polymerization photoinitiator.

29. The printable surface layer of claim 28, wherein said crosslinking agent is an aziridine derivative.
