Abstract

This invention provides novel nanofiber enhanced surface area substrates and structures comprising such substrates for use in various medical devices, as well as methods and uses for such substrates and medical devices. In one particular embodiment, methods for enhancing cellular functions on a surface of a medical device implant are disclosed which generally comprise providing a medical device implant comprising a plurality of nanofibers (e.g., nanowires) thereon and exposing the medical device implant to cells such as osteoblasts.

Claims

1. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein the wound dressing is flexible; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

2. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein the wound dressing is air-penetrable; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

3. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein the wound dressing is water-repellent; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

4. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein the wound dressing adheres to both dry surfaces and wet surfaces; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

5. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein the wound dressing does not chemically bond to the biological tissue surface; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

6. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are bent, curved, curled, or coiled; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

7. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average length of from about 1 nm to at least about 500 microns; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

8. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average length of from about 5 nm to at least about 1 micron.

9. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average length of from about 10 microns to at least about 125 microns.

10. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average length of from about 50 microns to at least about 100 microns.

11. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 5 nm to at least about 1 micron.

12. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 5 nm to at least about 500 microns.

13. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 20 nm to at least about 250 nm.

14. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 20 nm to at least about 200 nm.

15. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 40 nm to at least about 200 nm.

16. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 50 nm to at least about 150 nm.

17. The wound dressing of claim 7, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures have an average diameter of from about 75 nm to at least about 100 nm.

18. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures comprise nanowires which have a substantially uniform diameter along the length of the nanowire; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

19. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures comprise nanowires which have a non-uniform diameter along the length of the nanowire; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

20. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein a first portion of the plurality of nanostructures have a different size and/or shape than a second portion of the plurality of nanostructures; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

21. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures protrude at least 10 nm above a first surface of the wound dressing; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

22. The wound dressing of claim 21, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures protrude at least 100 nm above a first surface of the wound dressing.

23. The wound dressing of claim 21, wherein the van der Waals forces comprise from about 0.1 N/cm² to about 100 N/cm².

24. The wound dressing of claim 21, wherein the van der Waals forces comprise from about 1.0 N/cm² to about 25 N/cm².

25. The wound dressing of claim 21, wherein the van der Waals forces comprise from about 2.0 N/cm² to about 10 N/cm².

26. The wound dressing of claim 21, wherein the density of contact points per unit area between one or more surfaces of the wound dressing and the biological tissue comprises from about 1 contact point per micron² of biological tissue surface to about 2000 contact points per micron² of biological tissue surface.

27. The wound dressing of claim 21, wherein the density of contact points per unit area between one or more surfaces of the wound dressing and the biological tissue comprises from about 50 contact points per micron² of biological tissue surface to about 250 contact points per micron² of biological tissue surface.

28. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures comprises an average density on one or more surfaces of the wound dressing from about 50 nanostructures per square micron to at least about 100 nanostructures per square micron; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.

29. A wound dressing comprising:

a plurality of nanostructures; and

a bandage that includes a fibrous web, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures are incorporated within or associated with the fibrous web;

wherein the fibrous web includes a woven or non-woven fibrous mat; and

wherein a surface of the bandage is capable of adhering to a biological tissue surface due at least to van der Waals forces between at least a portion of the plurality of nanostructures and the biological tissue surface.
