Abstract

Systems and methods related to the field of cardiac resuscitation, and in particular to devices for assisting rescuers in performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Claims

1. A method for providing electrical therapy to a patient, the method comprising:

analyzing one or more physiologically generated signals from the patient;

selectively charging a defibrillation device based on the analysis of the one or more physiologically generated signals while chest compressions are being administered to the patient; and

providing a defibrillating shock from the charged defibrillating device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises only charging the defibrillation device if a defibrillating shock to the victim'"'"'s heart is determined, from the analysis of the physiologically generated signals, to be suitable therapy.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising, before providing the defibrillating shock, determining whether a defibrillating shock to the victim'"'"'s heart is suitable therapy based on the analyzed one or more physiologically generated signals.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises determining, based on the analysis of the one or more physiologically generated signals, whether to charge the defibrillation device or to instruct the user to continue chest compressions without charging the defibrillation device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises determining a rate of charge based on the one or more physiologically generated signals.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises determining a rate of charge based on a determined amount of time that remains until the end of a current chest compression cycle.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises determining a total amount of charge based on the one or more physiologically generated signals.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises imposing one or more safety interlocks to prevent accidental discharge of the defibrillation device during charging of the defibrillation device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein:

analyzing the one or more ECG signals comprises calculating an amplitude magnitude spectrum area (AMSA) value; and

selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises selectively charging the defibrillation device based on the calculated AMSA value.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises charging the defibrillation device over a time period of at least about 30 seconds.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein:

analyzing the one or more ECG signals comprises calculating an amplitude magnitude spectrum area (AMSA) value; and

selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises charging the defibrillation device at a charging speed based on the calculated AMSA value.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein providing a defibrillating shock from the charged defibrillating device comprises providing the shock after chest compressions have ceased being administered.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein providing a defibrillating shock from the charged defibrillating device comprises providing the shock during chest compressions.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a strength of a cross correlation between the one or more physiologically generated signals and a CPR signal.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein selectively charging the defibrillation device comprises selectively charging the defibrillation device based on the determined strength of the cross correlation.

16. The method of claim 15, before providing the defibrillating shock, determining whether a defibrillating shock to the victim'"'"'s heart is suitable therapy based on the analyzed one or more physiologically generated signals during CPR and re-confirming whether defibrillating shock to the victim'"'"'s heart is suitable therapy based on the analyzed one or more physiologically generated signals in the absence of CPR compressions when the determined strength of the cross correlation is above a threshold.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the battery power source is capable of delivering no more than 5 watts of continuous power.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the battery power source is one CR123 battery.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein at least one backup battery is provided solely as a backup to the battery power source, in case of failure of the battery power source.

20. An external defibrillator for providing automatically controlled shock to victims of heart problems, the external defibrillator comprising:

an electrical energy storage source;

a temporary electrical storage device in electrical connection with the electrical energy storage source and capable of delivering a defibrillating shock to a human victim;

a controller programmed to analyze one or more physiologically generated signals and to perform charging of the temporary electrical storage device from the electrical energy storage source while directing chest compressions of the victim.

21. The external defibrillator of claim 20, further comprising a charging device to charge the temporary electrical storage device in response to commands from the controller.

22. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to start charging the temporary electrical storage device at a time before the end of a current chest compression cycle that is determined to substantially match a time needed to fully charge the temporary electrical storage device.

23. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the temporary electrical storage device comprises a capacitor.

24. The external defibrillator of claim 20, further comprising electrode pads that are connected to the defibrillator, include adhesive material for adhering to the victim, and are arranged to deliver a defibrillating shock from the temporary electrical storage device to the victim.

25. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to selectively charge the charge the temporary electrical storage device only if a defibrillating shock to the victim'"'"'s heart is determined, from the analysis of the physiologically generated signals, to be suitable therapy.

26. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to determine whether a defibrillating shock to the victim'"'"'s heart is suitable therapy based on the analyzed one or more physiologically generated signals.

27. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to determine based on the analysis of the one or more physiologically generated signals, whether to charge the temporary electrical storage device or to instruct the user to continue chest compressions without charging the temporary electrical storage device.

28. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to determine a rate of charge for charging the temporary electrical storage device based on the one or more physiologically generated signals.

29. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to determine a rate of charge for charging the temporary electrical storage device based on a determined amount of time that remains until the end of a current chest compression cycle.

30. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to determine a total amount of charge for charging the temporary electrical storage device based on the one or more physiologically generated signals.

31. The external defibrillator of claim 20, further comprising one or more safety interlocks to prevent accidental discharge of the temporary electrical storage device during charging of the temporary electrical storage device.

32. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to:

analyze the one or more physiologically generated signals by calculating an amplitude magnitude spectrum area (AMSA) value; and

selectively charge the temporary electrical storage device based on the calculated AMSA value.

33. The external defibrillator of claim 20, wherein the controller is further programmed to:

analyze the one or more ECG signals by calculating an amplitude magnitude spectrum area (AMSA) value; and

selectively charge the charge the temporary electrical storage device at a charging speed based on the calculated AMSA value.

34. A method for providing electrical therapy to a patient, the method comprising:

analyzing one or more electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from the patient;

selectively charging a defibrillation device based on the analysis of the one or more physiologically generated signals while chest compressions are being administered to the patient; and

providing a defibrillating shock from the charged defibrillating device while chest compressions are administered.
