Abstract

A bone augment for repairing a bone defect. The bone augment includes a porous body and a metallic liner. The porous body defines a bore and is configured to be intraoperatively shaped to correspond to the bone defect. The metallic liner is injection molded within the bore such that portions of the liner interlock with pores of the porous body. The metallic liner is operable to mount an implant to the bone augment.

Claims

1. A bone augment for repairing a bone defect comprising:

a porous body that defines a bore, the porous body is configured to be intraoperatively shaped to correspond to the bone defect; and

a metallic liner injection molded within the bore such that portions of the liner interlock with pores of the porous body, the metallic liner is operable to mount an implant to the bone augment.

2. The bone augment of claim 1, wherein the bore extends through the porous body and is tapered from a first end to a second end.

3. The bone augment of claim 1, wherein the porous body includes at least one of a ceramic and Pro Osteon®

.

4. The bone augment of claim 1, further comprising a strengthening material within the porous body including at least one of a metal and a polymer.

5. The bone augment of claim 1, wherein the metallic liner is operable to mount a stem of a femoral implant to the bone augment.

6. A bone augment for repairing a bone defect comprising:

a porous body that defines a bore, the porous body is configured to be intraoperatively shaped to correspond to the bone defect; and

a metallic liner secured within the bore.

7. The bone augment of claim 6, wherein the metallic liner includes a main body having a first locking surface and a cap having a second locking surface that is operable to engage with the second locking surface to secure the cap to the main body.

8. The bone augment of claim 7, wherein the first locking surface includes one of a locking tab and a locking recess, and the second locking surface includes another of the locking tab and the locking recess.

9. The bone augment of claim 7, wherein the main body is secured to the cap by a weld between the first locking surface and the second locking surface.

10. The bone augment of claim 7, wherein the first locking surface includes first threads and the second locking surface includes second threads;

and

wherein the main body is secured to the cap through engagement between the first threads and the second threads.

11. The bone augment of claim 7, wherein the first locking surface includes a first tapered surface and the second locking surface includes a second tapered surface that is operable to cooperate with the first locking surface to provide a taper lock between the main body and the cap.

12. The bone augment of claim 7, wherein the main body includes a first flange and the cap includes a second flange.

13. The bone augment of claim 12, wherein at least one of the first flange and the second flange is annular.

14. The bone augment of claim 7, wherein the main body defines a first taper lock surface and a second taper lock surface, a support portion is between the first taper lock surface and the second taper lock surface;

wherein the first taper lock surface is operable to mount a femoral neck implant thereto and the second taper lock surface is operable to mount a femoral stem implant thereto.

15. A bone augment for repairing a bone defect comprising:

a bone engaging body defining a plurality of pores, the body is configured to be intraoperatively shaped to correspond to the bone defect; and

an exterior surface of the bone engaging body including a polymeric reinforcement member mounted thereto, the reinforcement member is operable to be intraoperatively shaped to correspond to the bone defect.

16. The bone augment of claim 15, further comprising a projection extending from the polymeric reinforcement member, the projection including an aperture that is operable to receive a fastening device to secure the bone augment to bone proximate to the bone defect.

17. The bone augment of claim 15, wherein the body includes at least one of a ceramic and Pro Osteon®

and the polymeric reinforcement member includes polyether ether ketone.

18. The bone augment of claim 15, wherein the bone augment is operable to repair an uncontained bone defect with the bone engaging body replacing cancellous bone and the polymeric reinforcement member replacing cortical bone.

19. The bone augment of claim 15, wherein the polymeric reinforcement member is molded to the exterior surface such that portions of the reinforcement member are mechanically interlocked with the pores.

20. The bone augment of claim 15, wherein the body includes a density that approximates a density of cancellous bone and the polymeric reinforcement member includes a density that approximates a density of cortical bone.
