Abstract

A method for tagging digital media is described. The method includes selecting a digital media and selecting region within the digital media. The method may further include associating a person or entity with the selected region and sending a notification of the association the person or entity or a different person or entity. The method may further include sending advertising with the notification.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving a selection from a first device for an item of digital media; and

responsive to the selection;

accessing one or more databases that store the item of digital media and tag data associated with the item of digital media, wherein the tag data defines one or more regions of the item of digital media and associates one or more tags with corresponding ones of the one or more regions;

generating a response including data operative to cause the first device to provide a graphical user interface comprising the item of digital media and the one or more tags associated with the item of digital media, wherein the graphical user interface is operative to provide an indication of a select region of the one or more regions in response to user interaction with the tag corresponding to the select region; and

transmitting the response to the first device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the user interaction comprises a cursor hovering over the tag.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the user interaction comprises a cursor hovering near the tag.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the tags are rendered in the graphical user interface next to the item of digital media.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the tags are rendered in the graphical user interface below the item of digital media.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein a border is used to display an indication of the select region.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the one or more tags in the graphical user interface comprises a hyperlink.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with text corresponding to the tag.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the text identifies a person in a social networking system.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with the person in the social networking system.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the graphical user interface further comprises one or more controls to remove one or more tags.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing computer program code for:

receiving a selection from a first device for an item of digital media; and

responsive to the selection;

accessing one or more databases that store the item of digital media and tag data associated with the item of digital media, wherein the tag data defines one or more regions of the item of digital media and associates one or more tags with corresponding ones of the one or more regions;

generating a response including data operative to cause the first device to provide a graphical user interface comprising the item of digital media and the one or more tags associated with the item of digital media, wherein the graphical user interface is operative to provide an indication of a select region of the one or more regions in response to user interaction with the tag corresponding to the select region; and

transmitting the response to the first device.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the user interaction comprises a cursor hovering over the tag.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the user interaction comprises a cursor hovering near the tag.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the tags are rendered in the graphical user interface next to the item of digital media.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the tags are rendered in the graphical user interface below the item of digital media.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein a border is used to display an indication of the select region.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein at least one of the one or more tags in the graphical user interface comprises a hyperlink.

19. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with text corresponding to the tag.

20. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 wherein the text identifies a person in a social networking system.

21. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 20 wherein the hyperlink links to information associated with the person in the social networking system.

22. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the graphical user interface further comprises one or more controls to remove one or more tags.
