Abstract

A scheme for indicating via a network server a state of a message which has been redirected from a message server associated with the network server to a mobile communications device that is associated with a desktop system, wherein the desktop system is connected over a local area network to the network server and the message server. In one embodiment, the scheme comprises receiving at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device, the plurality of action signals indicating that at least an action has been effectuated at the mobile communications device for a message redirected to the mobile communications device; and as a consequence of receiving the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device, causing a graphical change to a message status icon at the message server to indicate that the message has been acted upon at the mobile communications device.

Claims

1. A method of indicating via a network server a state of a message which has been redirected from a message server associated with the network server to a mobile communications device that is associated with a desktop system, wherein the desktop system is connected over a local area network to the network server and the message server, the message server comprising a mailbox store for the messages of a user of the desktop system, the method comprising:

receiving at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device, the plurality of action signals indicating that at least an action has been effectuated at the mobile communications device for a message redirected to the mobile communications device; and

as a consequence of receiving the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device, causing a graphical change to a message status icon at the message server to indicate that the message has been acted upon at the mobile communications device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile communications device is a PDA.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile communications device is a pager.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile communications device is a cellular telephone.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile communications device is an Internet appliance.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

read signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been read at the mobile communications device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

filed signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been filed into a specific folder at the mobile communications device.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

forward signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been forwarded from the mobile communications device to another recipient.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

reply signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been replied to at the mobile communications device.

10. A system for indicating via a network server a state of a message which has been redirected from a message server associated with the network server to a mobile communications device that is associated with a desktop system, wherein the desktop system is connected over a local area network to the network server and the message server, the message server comprising a mailbox store for the messages of a user of the desktop system, wherein the system comprises:

a component associated with the network server configured to process at least one of a plurality of action signals received from the mobile communications device, the plurality of action signals indicating that at least an action has been effectuated at the mobile communications device for a message redirected to the mobile communications device; and

a component associated with the network server configured to cause a graphical change to a message state icon at the message server, as a consequence of receiving the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device, to indicate that the message has been acted upon at the mobile communications device.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

read signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been read at the mobile communications device.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

filed signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been filed into a specific folder at the mobile communications device.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

forward signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been forwarded from the mobile communications device to another recipient.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the at least one of a plurality of action signals from the mobile communications device is a “

reply signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been replied to at the mobile communications device.

15. A mobile communications device, comprising:

a component configured to determine that a message received over a wireless network is a message redirected from a message server associated with a network server;

a component configured to generate at least an action signal responsive to determining that an action has been effectuated at the mobile communications device for the message redirected from the message server; and

a component configured to transmit said at least an action signal to the network server for causing a graphical change to a message status icon at the message server to indicate that the message has been acted upon at the mobile communications device.

16. The mobile communications device of claim 15, wherein the at least an action signal is a “

read signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been read at the mobile communications device.

17. The mobile communications device of claim 15, wherein the at least an action signal is a “

filed signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been filed into a specific folder at the mobile communications device.

18. The mobile communications device of claim 15, wherein the at least an action signal is a “

forward signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been forwarded from the mobile communications device to another recipient.

19. The mobile communications device of claim 15, wherein the at least an action signal is a “

reply signal”

indicating that the message redirected to the mobile communications device has been replied to at the mobile communications device.
