Abstract

Triglyceride oils and fuel compositions derived therefrom are disclosed. In some embodiments the novel oils contain levels of medium chain fatty acids such as those having chain lengths of 8, 10, 12, and 14 carbon atoms. Also disclosed are biodiesel and alkane diesel fuels derived from the novel oils. Byproduct animal feeds from the process of manufacturing the novel oils are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A triglyceride oil composition comprising a lipid profile of:

a. at least 4% C₈-C₁₄; and

b. one or more of the following attributes;

i. less than 0.4 micrograms/ml total carotenoids;

ii. less than 0.001 micrograms/ml lycopene;

iii. less than 0.02 micrograms/ml beta carotene;

iv. less than 0.02 milligrams of chlorophyll per kilogram of oil;

v. 0.40-0.60 milligrams of gamma tocopherol per 100 grams of oil;

vi. 3-9 mg campesterol per 100 grams of oil; and

vii. less than 0.5 milligrams of total tocotrienols per gram of oil.

2. The triglyceride oil composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of C8 is at least 0.3%.

3. The triglyceride oil composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of C10 is at least 2%.

4. The triglyceride oil composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of C12 is at least 2%.

5. The triglyceride oil composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of C12 is at least 4%.

6. The triglyceride oil composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of C10-C14 is at least 30%.

7. A blend of the oil of claim 1 with an oil selected from the group consisting of an oil from soy, rapeseed, canola, palm, palm kernel, coconut, corn, waste vegetable, Chinese tallow, olive, sunflower, cotton seed, chicken fat, beef tallow, porcine tallow, microalgae, macroalgae, Cuphea, flax, peanut, choice white grease, lard, Camelina sativa, mustard seed, cashew nut, oats, lupine, kenaf, calendula, hemp, coffee, linseed (flax), hazelnut, euphorbia, pumpkin seed, coriander, camellia, sesame, safflower, rice, tung tree, cocoa, copra, opium poppy, castor beans, pecan, jojoba, jatropha, macadamia, Brazil nuts, avocado, petroleum, or a distillate fraction of any of the preceding oils.

A method of processing the oil of claim 1, comprising performing one or more chemical reactions selected from the group consisting of transesterification, hydrogenation, hydrocracking, deoxygenation, isomerization, interesterification, hydroxylation, hydrolysis to yield free fatty acids, and saponification.

9. A fuel made from hydrogenation and isomerization of the oil of claim 1.

10. A fuel made from transesterification of the oil of claim 1.

11. The fuel of claim 10, wherein said fuel is blended with conventional diesel fuel.

12. The fuel of claim 10, wherein said fuel is blended with biodiesel derived from vegetable oil.

13. The fuel of claim 12, wherein said biodiesel is derived from a vegetable oil selected from the group consisting of soy oil, palm oil, and rapeseed oil.

14. The fuel of claim 13, wherein said fuel is further blended with conventional diesel.

15. The fuel of claim 14, wherein said conventional diesel comprises by volume from about 50% to about 95% of said fuel.

16. The fuel of claim 15, wherein said conventional diesel comprises by volume from about 70% to about 90% of said fuel.

17. The fuel of claim 16, wherein said conventional diesel comprises by volume from about 80% to about 90% of said fuel.

18. The fuel of claim 12, wherein said biodiesel derived from the vegetable oil comprises by volume from about 0% to about 50% of said fuel.

19. The fuel of claim 18, wherein said biodiesel derived from the vegetable oil comprises by volume from about 5% to about 30% of said fuel.

20. The fuel of claim 19, wherein said biodiesel derived from the vegetable oil comprises by volume from about 10% to about 20% of said fuel.

21. The blended oil of claim 7, wherein said triglyceride oil composition is blended with an oil selected from the group consisting of soy, palm oil, and rapeseed oil.

22. A method of processing the blended oil of claim 21, comprising performing one or more chemical reactions selected from the group consisting of transesterification, hydrogenation, hydrocracking, deoxygenation, isomerization, interesterification, hydroxylation, hydrolysis to yield free fatty acids, and saponification.

23. A fuel made from transesterification of the blended oil of claim 22.
