Abstract

A data-encoding system includes a source of unencoded data, and a first encoder interoperably coupled to the source, wherein the first encoder is adapted to receive the unencoded data, encode the unencoded data, and output encoded data at a first data rate. The data encoding system further includes a second encoder interoperably coupled to the source, wherein the second encoder is adapted to receive the unencoded data, encode the unencoded data, and output encoded data at a second data rate in which the second data rate exceeds the first data rate. Claims

1. A video-data chapter segmentation method comprising:

monitoring for at least one external start trigger;

responsive to detection of at least one of the at least one external start trigger, creating a chapter start point at a point in the video data corresponding to a specified time preceding the at least one detected external start trigger;

initiating recording of the video data beginning at the point in the video data;

monitoring for at least one stop trigger; and

responsive to detection of at least one of the at least one stop trigger, creating a chapter stop point at a point in the data corresponding to a specified time preceding the at least one detected stop trigger.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of monitoring for at least one external start trigger comprises at least one of:

monitoring for emergency light activation;

monitoring for siren activation;

monitoring for a vehicle crash;

monitoring for a predefined vehicle speed being exceeded;

monitoring for wireless microphone activation;

monitoring for record button activation; and

monitoring for acceleration outside a predefined range.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the specified time preceding the at least one detected external start trigger is zero seconds.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the specified time preceding the at least one detected stop trigger is zero seconds.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of monitoring for at least one stop trigger comprises at least one of:

monitoring for stop button activation;

monitoring for timer expiration following deactivation of a triggering device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

building a chapter menu;

using a frame from the video data between the chapter start point and the chapter stop inclusive as a selectable chapter icon.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising using a time and date stamp from the chapter start point in a chapter identifier.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising background recording the video data.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising, prior to detection of the at least one stop trigger, continuing recording of the video data.

10. A video-data chapter segmentation computer system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory including software instructions adapted to enable the computer system to perform the steps of;

monitoring for at least one external start trigger;

responsive to detection of at least one of the at least one external start trigger, creating a chapter start point at a point in the video data corresponding to a specified time preceding the at least one detected external start trigger;

initiating recording of the video data beginning at the point in the video data;

monitoring for at least one stop trigger; and

responsive to detection of at least one of the at least one stop trigger, creating a chapter stop point at a point in the data corresponding to a specified time preceding the at least one detected stop trigger.

11. The computer system of claim 10, wherein the step of monitoring for at least one external start trigger comprises at least one of:

monitoring for emergency light activation;

monitoring for siren activation;

monitoring for a vehicle crash;

monitoring for a predefined vehicle speed being exceeded;

monitoring for wireless microphone activation;

monitoring for record button activation; and

monitoring for acceleration outside a predefined range.

12. The computer system of claim 10, wherein the specified time preceding the at least one detected external start trigger is zero seconds.

13. The computer system of claim 10, wherein the specified time preceding the at least one detected stop trigger is zero seconds.

14. The computer system of claim 10, wherein the step of monitoring for at least one stop trigger comprises at least one of:

monitoring for stop button activation;

monitoring for timer expiration following deactivation of a triggering device.

15. The computer system of claim 10, further comprising software instructions adapted to enable the computer system to perform the steps of:

building a chapter menu;

using a frame from the video data between the chapter start point and the chapter stop inclusive as a selectable chapter icon.

16. The computer system of claim 15, further comprising software instructions adapted to enable the computer system to perform the step of using a time and date stamp from the chapter start point in a chapter identifier.

17. The computer system of claim 16, the software instructions further comprising software instructions adapted to enable the computer system to perform the steps of background recording the video data.

75. The computer system of claim 10, further comprising software instructions adapted to enable the computer system to perform the step of, prior to detection of the at least one stop trigger, continuing recording of the video data.
